A lot of people hate Rie because she only voiced tsundere characters for a time, but the person herself is really nice. I listened to all of the Zero no Tsukaima radio show, and she's just so happy all the time

Yeah, despite being typecast as the tsundere a lot, her real personality is hilariously different. Most of the time she'll get really flustered when needing to act that way in a live appearance.

Yeah, Kyousougiga was a real reminder of how good she could be when not typecast.

Yeah, Seiyuu radio shows are a great way to learn about the real person behind their "voice", especially if they're type casted a lot. Like Matsuoka Yoshitsugu is known for this roles as the "cool protagonist" (Kirito, Bell, etc) but in reality he's kind of awkward in public appearances. Hikasa Yoko also gets a lot of roles as a serious older female character but she's actually really wacky in real life and quite the comedian.

It was nice to see them do a variety of VA jobs. Poor Rin had the hardest job. And Futaba finally had a reason to be happy.

I got into this because of Lucy's impressions, and I have to say, two episodes in, that I'm really digging it. You can't help but root for poor Futaba.

Watched episode 6, and I don't need any radio shows to tell me Rie Kugimiya's just about the nicest person in the world if her appearance in that episode is anything like her real personality. Surprised how much I'm digging this show, honestly.

It's amazing how much knowing something well helps with the quality of a story. Both this show and Shirobako are good examples for this effect.

Tiny Manager is the best, so I'm curious to see what they do with her next week. Watching them live perform for maybe 15 people gave me High School flashbacks... I think I need a gif of Futabe realizing her boss was watching when she screwed up. Overall, another cute episode, and this one and last week have been surprisingly upbeat for this show, it makes we worry that the next trainwreck is just around the corner. Oh, and since Rin's slightly questionable school friend got some play this episode this 4Koma seems relevant. The full archives for the 4koma start here, incidentally: http://blog.livedoor.jp/hajimemashite_maru/archives/2013-03.html Untranslated, of course. I don't think anyone has ever done scans for the doujin or the web comics. madmac fucked around with this message at 02:33 on Aug 26, 2015 |

They put up another song video this week: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbYr8HzqQSI (Unfortunately they've been taking them all down a week or two after posting them.) There's also a video for the mangaka's idol unit, I had no idea she was in same group as Yui Horie before this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_TU4UIVgY4 There's no episode preview for next week but there is still one episode left before it's over. madmac fucked around with this message at 03:21 on Sep 23, 2015 |

I kinda laughed to myself when Yui Horie mentioned her own unit and up popped a depiction of five brown haired brown eyed girls. "Oh yeah," I reminded myself. Normal seiyu don't have purple, pink or green hair.

IIRC, If you go through the list of guest Seiyu for this show it's basically a bunch of people who are friends with Masumi Asano and/or work for the same production company. Also the creator gets a bit part to play in every single episode but I haven't really been keeping track. Oh, speaking of rookie seiyu doing embarrassing live gigs for like 20 people, this anime is weirdly true to life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rPnaHavgVI Rin's VA is almost as tiny as her character. madmac fucked around with this message at 05:20 on Sep 23, 2015 |

Yeah, basically any VA that appeared in the original 4 Koma was a result of Asano using a form of "would you like to be in my manga" or "please, please, please, let me us you in my manga". Also, Asano is the songwriter of the opening theme song. She notes that the song actually might bring her more money than the actual anime series since she gets royalties automatically for the song but she only sees money from the anime if the anime hits a certain quota. I have to ask, are this and Koe de Oshigoto! referencing the same thing with the similarly named characters? SgS: Konno Aoi KdO: Kanna Aoi (pseudonym)/Kanna Aoyagi (real name) Author's name: Konno Azure (Aoi is blue, Azure is a shade of blue) Ordinarily, I'd assume not, since they're very, very different series, but since they're both about VAs and have similar character names... homage? Coincidence? Is it just the equivalent of "John Doe" in Japanese? Koe de Oshigoto! is NSFW. It's not porn, but it straddles the line at times. Don't look it up at work.

I'm sure it's just a common name and that's it. (Aoi is super common, unquestionably, Konna I'm less certain about.) Sore ga is a realistic sort of show so pretty much everyone has mundane names really, Ichinose Futaba, Konoha Rin, ect, not going to raise any eyebrows. The only exception is Ichigo Moesaki which is blatantly a fake "stage" name and in fact her character profile in the doujin makes it clear that just she refuses to tell anyone what her real name is.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=5&v=IMM-mrlZeaY Of course they did. Last episode was mostly just a reminder that being a Seiyu is still depressing as poo poo. Also lol at Masumi showing up as herself in the last episode to reiterate her goal is to be filthy stinking rich. That last bit was the most ambiguous "Second season...maybe???" teaser that I've seen in ages. I suppose it might, if only because they're putting so much effort into promoting the 3D version of Earphones and bringing back the authors old unit and all. There was also a live "collaboration" event with Shirobako last week, though it was basically just them hanging out with Zura's VA. Still... Overall, I think the show was strongest in it's middle stretch of episodes when it spent the most time developing it's main characters and focusing on voice work but I enjoyed watching it all the way through. Would watch another season.

Shirobako was far better, but I still enjoyed this show quite a bit. It has heart and passion, even though the structure of the plot was kinda weak and felt repetitive at the end. The ending was great. And I loved all the seiyuu cameos.

I think the basic format of the show, where every episode was basically talking about a different side of the industry (Radio Shows! Movie Dubs! Video Games!) ect ended up working against it overall. It kinda makes sense in the context of the original doujin and what they were written to do, but narratively it's very clunky, and then the show runs out of new topics and needs some sort of semi-dramatic arc to end the show on and yeah, the middle segment was better. Looking at the web 4Koma, it pretty much abandons plot and just does a bunch of one-off character gags and industry jokes/Slice of Life stuff, which I would have liked to have seen more of in the anime but oh well.

Finally finished this show. The focus is broad and narrow at the same time, which kind of makes it a weird show to watch, but it was eminently enjoyable to watch. Futaba is a good protagonist if only because you really want her to succeed, and even with everything under her belt by the end of the show, she still has a long road ahead of her. You know she's passionate but she has trouble getting that out to other people. Also, the seiyu cameos were pretty great and the highlight of the episodes they were in.

Speaking of Futaba, in retrospect I think her speech to the evaluation board about wanting to be someone who works as a Seiyu for a long time was interesting, I didn't give it much thought when it was happening, but actually that is a real career path that the shows/manga creator followed, along with a lot of other people. The VA's who pretty much never get the starring role but are still working steady after 10+ years, plugging away as support characters, narrators, midboss villains, ect. I could totally see Futaba going that route too, it's fitting when you think about it.
