I dropped this show at like episode 3-4. I was gunna ask if it's worth finishing, but looking at the thread it just went downhill. See this is why I pick at stuff like the uninspired setting. It's the mark of a lazy writer, and sounds like the whole script turned out lazy.

The setting isn't the problem, it's that the script feels half-baked and nothing feels fleshed out enough. Like you can quibble over details all you want but the setting being WW2 with magical girls is the least of this show's issues (I say this without having watched past episode 5, but my point remains)

A good writer could do something with the setting, but they're also not going to choose it. It's the sort of setting you choose when you want to put the least amount of effort into your period piece. You don't have to research real people or events, you don't have to do any serious worldbuilding. It doesn't sound like they even explain what diverged that timeline from ours. A good writer would want to do one of those things. A lazy writer avoids them.

I caught up. It felt compelling again when the younger spy showed up, which made me feel like if there could have been better instances of side characters directing plot threads instead of just being bits and pieces of them amidst comedic filler, the middle parts of the show wouldn't have felt as uninteresting. Well, I've liked it since ep 8. Last week's ep: very nice. Very romantic

And we're done. Not a great ending, but not an abysmal one. The fights were pretty entertaining. Thank gently caress they didn't kill Izetta. Still should have had her and Fine kiss, should have shown us their reunion (or at least given Izetta an actual line of dialog in the ending) instead of wasting time reminding us how World War 2 ended, but whatever, as bad as this show could be I'll accept this ending. Show turned out a C+ overall, I'd say. Decent production values, great (if far too-lightly explored) main couple, entertaining action scenes, and an engaging premise all creaking and straining against a profoundly trope-y and mediocre writer. I'll have to be much more skeptical the next time I see Hiroyuki Yoshino's name on a show I'm interested in. Spiritus Nox fucked around with this message at 18:37 on Dec 17, 2016 |

Well thank god they didn't kill her off. Stupid show, why weren't you better? Some of the fights were great. Izetta and Fine are great. Everything else...

That fight was pretty deece. And Izetta and Fine got together in the end. But other than that this show was a massive disappointment. It could've been so good.

Just got around to watching the last episode. I've gone from resigned about how mediocre the show got to angry about how much wasted potential it had. This could have really gone somewhere if it actually focused on any of its strengths instead of devoting so much time to trying to do funny gags.

it feels like the single-cour format was a major shortcoming for this show. I don't have a problem with the comic relief they used while setting up the world and characters, but by the time the world building was done the show was already knocking on the door of its climax. Consequently, while Izetta and Fine are given ample exposition that fuels their big moments, we get dynamics like with Bianca and Rickert's episode where they're given absolutely no time to weave their own subplot. Berkmann, the crafty Germanian antagonist, is at odds with his own country but we're never given the insight into how and why that would really flesh him out as a character. young Jonas becoming Sieg's undoing in the last episode is a highlight moment, but we don't see enough of it haunting Sieg and setting up a truly emotional impact. Fine and Izetta are beautiful, but as static leads they need a vibrant cast beside them. their sub-characters are diamonds in the rough—without the proper care they're unable to do a good job of invigorating their show. https://twitter.com/BUNBUN922/status/810106514388254720 i liked it regardless.

I saw a Japanese tweet pointing out that Finé's name means "the end", so you can also interpret the title of the show as "Finé's Izetta" I think everyone's basically covered how I feel about the show, but I'm glad Izetta lived and I hope people write some fluffy fanfic about her and Finé being happy together.

I am into that sort of thing, thank you! I mostly read Japanese fanfic nowadays but I will definitely check those out.
