Sonic's catchphrase "gotta go fast!" is both a rallying cry for the speedy rodent and also a chiding commentary on the cruel speed with which the capitalist machinery he struggles with runs. The machines in Sonic's world produce too much too fast and with that production too much pollution as can be seen in metallic madness zone. All this work is to produce the false utopia of spring yard zone a gaudy pallid parody of a city where even the walls themselves proof to be falsehoods hiding rings in act two and a 1up and shield right before the boss. One could surmise that Sonic is always "going fast" since his very existence is a constant rebuff of all of capitalism's follies. |

sonic's iconic treasure - what he lusts after, what gives him the means and motivation to maintain his legendary velocity - is the golden ring. whence the ring? some might see a desire for wealth, the materialist, the capitalist. some may perceive a sly nod to literary tropes of strength and power, with tolkien assuming greater contemporary significance but a deeper and perhaps more authentic connection on display to brünhild's ring in the nibelungenlied. those inclined to explore the complex dynamic between sonic and tails may discern an unspoken and perhaps forbidden desire, a stylized homoerotic attraction, that in the days before legal acceptance of same-sex unions in many jurisdictions was coded as a quest for the social sanction of marriage, a series of golden wedding bands that could easily slip from sonic's grasp no matter how skilfully they were sought. but deeper than all of these metaphors, however attractive they may seem, is a central allusion to dante's journeys through the concentric rings of hell and spheres of paradise. the player of a sonic game has a choice to guide the digital protagonist either in the direction of sin or virtue as the narrative progresses, depending less upon the literal maneuvers made with the controller and more upon the intent - the righteousness, or lack thereof - that motivates the player as sonic is guided, slowly but surely, to the end that all mortal beings must eventually confront.

Tails's name is both a nickname and a reference to Janus the two faced Greek god of beginnings and endings. Just as Janus had two faces Tails has two tails. No where is the duality of this character more evident than in Angel Island zone an island that is literally engulfed in flames after you defeat the first midboss roboegg in an obvious allegory to the angels that rebelled against God and were subsequently banished to the fires of hell much like the titular island itself. And much like Virgil from Dante's Inferno Tails must both run fast and fly to save Sonic by pulling him out of the flames of hell while spinning his two tails like a helicopter. In this moment Tails is both savior and sidekick, a hindrance who gets in your way when you try to bounce off an enemy multiple times but also a boon as he can lift you up to get power ups Sonic couldn't normally reach like the flame shield above the waterfall at the beginning of act two.

Sonic as a Christ like redeemer is a theme that is present in every Sonic the Hedgehog game. Sonic does not kill his enemies he frees them. When he jumps on a eggbot the metal chrysalis is gone and born from it an organic animal creature emerges that is meant to symbolize the id inside of each of us. Just like in real life a wage slave will go about his assigned duties with listless energy and dull precision until he has his Sonic spin attack moment and is freed from his capitalist shell. This spin attack way come in the form of a sudden epiphany maybe a book that the worker reads that changes his perspective but the redeeming moment must come from outside the self. Each of us must seek out our own "Sonic the Hedgehog" and be defeated by him if we want to be truly free.

Amy Rose is a representation of the negative influence that toxic masculinity and the patriarchy have on young girls' psyches and how it influences their personalities toward vapidity and sets them in rigid gender roles later in life.

In the critically acclaimed Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic (Christ Redeemer) faces off against his foil Shadow the hedgehog, who represents the negative aspects of perfection: Indifference, Obsession, Superiority, Idealism (As supported by the fact that Shadow skates around as if his shoes were in-lines as opposed to Sonic's fluid running animation (When he gets going, his feet don't touch the clouds, he is held aloft, his head in the clouds.)) and Contempt. Shadow has been corrupted by the capitalist world order, to the point that certain gaps in the map are only traversable by using the ring-dash technique. (In later sequels we would see Shadow take up symbols of the military industrial complex such as driving a tank, or firing a rifle despite the fact that his homing attack does sufficient damage to kill an enemy.) Shadow's name refers to the Jungian concept of the Shadow-self, eluding that those narcissistic elements are likely also present in Sonic as well. Despite these negative characteristics, Sonic fights for salvation of the planet as a whole. In contrast, Shadow has selfishly guarded his prowess, seeking only to reunite with his beloved Maria. Only when Shadow is surpassed by his predecessor Biolizard: The ultimate lifeform as it fuses with Lost Colony does he learn to align himself with Sonic and ultimately to sacrifice himself and therein find redemption. I doubt that these deeper allusions were presented by mistake, as during the ending of the game, we are instructed by Jun Senoue in his track "Live and Learn" to learn from the works of yesterday, or else never find our way. We could abandon interpretations of video game storylines to the realm of trite doggerel, but each one of these characters seeks to reinterpret morals passed down through history. --- Making the world a little brighter, one hug at a time. --- |

Sonic is at it's core a game about time management. You can go fast, earn points, and complete the game quickly, or you can slow down and explore, potentially finding hundreds of rings as well as shields and other bonuses, but risk losing it all as the timer slips towards 0.

Sonic is a hedgehog And he likes some loving things loving Sonic especially Loves his loving rings, When he runs right into one it makes a loving "ding!" So Sonic loves to run into A bunch of loving rings. If he fucks up, he loses them They shower across the screen- Sonic loses his loving mind; When he loses those loving rings! What would Sigmund Freud say, About those loving rings? Is it Oedipal or sorrowful, How much he loves those loving things? One of the many things that can have a ring Is a loving ringing bell, Is it Pavlov's dog that makes Sonic hoard Infinite rings in his eternal hell? https://i.imgur.com/QKTkerO.mp4 |

earlier attempts to understand Sonic were fundamentally flawed, because they were all asking the wrong questions. you cannot understand why Sonic goes fast without first understanding what he is running from. |

It's no coincidence that all of the power ups in the Sonic universe are trapped within tvs. Television in the Sonic universe symbolizes the trapped potential inside all of us stymied by an incessant need to watch excessive amounts of television. Upon breaking the tv and subsequently it's siren hold on us we are able to free the hidden potential within us and draw upon hidden reserves of strength such as the ability to run faster (exercise) or the shield which let's Sonic get hit without losing any rings (Self confidence). The tvs with Eggman's face on them in icecap zone will hurt Sonic if he jumps on them however.

Sonic: He's the fastest thing alive. You've all heard the infamous theme song and have all thought to yourselves, "Can Sonic really move faster than the speed of light? What moralistic implications does Sonic possessing faster-than-light travel have in regard to civilization at large? Dr. Ivo Robotnik has been the head of Interstellar Warp Drive Research and Development at the North American Institute of Science for 35 years, and is quoted as saying that Sonic the Hedgehog's outright refusal to share his knowledge is highhandedly responsible for world-wide war and famine, and is regarded by the greater scientific community as having sealed the planet's fate. |
