Metis of the Chat Thread
Aug 1, 2014

Many video games, especially mobile games, are built around encouraging spending enormous amounts of money for slim chances at reward, whether through a loot box or gacha system. This can become a compulsion or addiction akin to gambling addiction, and this thread is host to resources for people who feel they have or are at risk of developing a problem.

If you feel it is necessary and would help you, admins can also remove your access to this subforum. Please feel free to PM a mod or IK to make this request. If you don't have PMs, you can also use the email addresses in this post which is kept up to date for current admins and mods.

Many of these resources are taken from the resource thread in the gambling/poker subforum, but I have also included some specifically about video game addiction.

Here is a link to an FAQ on problem gambling put together by professionals.

Something that I want to emphasize here is that no one is immune to all of this. It's worthwhile to occasionally take stock of your situation and see if it's stopped being about having fun.

If you do think you have a problem, here are some general gambling hotlines you can call to talk to people who can help:

United States
Canada
United Kingdom
Australia
A compilation of lists to helplines in different countries

Here are some links to resources on video game addiction and gambling:

Gaming and gambling
What is video game addiction?
Therapists who specialise in video game addiction
Gaming addiction explained

This resource will be updated as needed. If you think you have something to add to it PM a mod and we'll work together on making it as good as it can be.
