The QAA podcast recently did an episode about Frederic Wertham and how a 2012 study discovered that Wertham "manipulated, overstated, compromised and fabricated evidence" by doing stuff like editing or even making up quotes.

A psychiatrist faking research data to give them the predermined outcome they want which also happens to be sensationalist and sells copies of their book? Why such a thing is unheard of, and definitely not what the vast majority of the field is built on.

Tim Odland (Eye of Odin) is auctioning original art to fund his medical bills, if you or someone you know is in the Utah area, help spread the word.

Tess Fowler (Rat Queens) is also selling a lot of original art currently on her store envy page, buy some art to help pay the bills.

I'm in the process of going through my old trades and seeing what I can get on Kindle since my eyes are going and I dislike having to wear glasses to read the physical books instead of throwing them up on my tv screen through the laptop. It's looking like I'm gonna have to rebuy Astro City, are the metrobooks vol 1-4 the new complete collection? I had all the early stuff, but started missing issues when I moved away from buying physical copies and the book kept relaunching and switching publishers.

Yep, the Metrobooks are collecting the whole shebang in order. I think Vol. 5 comes out soon?

A discord I'm in was talking about Fable a few weeks ago, warning a new reader about Willingham's agenda in the later books. I was curious to see how they held up since I haven't read them in years and within the first couple pages, Snow White is already saying that social programs are government coddling, so I guess the signs were always there the whole time .

And how! He's an extreme zionist and incorporates that pretty heavily into Fables too. It starts very small and subtle and as the series grew in popularity he become much more obvious about it.

I read through the entire series but that was when I was innocent and didn't pay attention to politics. :(

I actually have the revival of it in my pulls but haven't read it yet...guess I'll cancel that

Willingham wrote for Breitbart at one point, so not much question where his politics is.

The politics is pretty easy to ignore for a lot of Fables because it is a pretty easy parody to say Snow White, who worked her way up (with some help from her fairy godmother) is a small gov't conservative, but that angle is never really examined and there are a few places where the mask really slips.

Bigby goes on a pro-Israel rant for a page and a half, and that's aged pretty poorly.

yeah that and witch using abortions to power her magic were the big ones. I do agree that writers can and should write characters with views that are not the writer's own, but knowing what we know now, that mask started slipping early.

In the second trade and Goldilocks being a parody of a leftist revolutionary hits the same feeling.

I got the first issue of Penthouse Comics because I wanted to support that kind of thing, especially now that Heavy Metal is dead. But it wasn’t very good. I’m not sure why they decided to do all crime stories. I think the second issue comes out this week but I’m not sure if my desire to support comics for grownups is enough to get me to buy it.

I had been wondering about Penthouse Comics. I've been seeing a lot of very good artists on covers but hadn't heard much about the interiors. Sad that it's much worse quality. I too would like to support (good) comics for grownups.

The art is great, it’s the stories that are ho hum. And too samey, imo, all crime stuff. And the porno pages at the back are just a topless lady who looks slightly angry on a motorcycle. I was expecting them to go a little artier or high concept with it.

ruddiger posted:

Yeah there’s a big thing in the first issue where they apologize for that.

Pardon the cross-posting, but for anyone watching X-Men '97, a music mashup producer I know (who is secretly my brother) mashed up the X-Men animated series theme with Whitney Houston's "I'm Your Baby Tonight," and I think it slaps.

Started reading the Fourth World Omnibus recently, and I'd forgotten how dogshit a writer Kirby was. I can appreciate the plot, but the script is like below Fletcher Hanks -level. The pacing is poo poo because of all the dialogue, and all the dialogue is pretty much as stupid as it could be.

But then there's Don Rickles so IDK.

(And I've read Captain Victory so I know it wasn't just the DC stories. Kirby simply didn't understand how to write comics.)

I have been seeing a lot of random Facebook posts from comic groups I do not belong to, mostly complaining about what a lovely writer Stan Lee was, and how he took so much credit he didn't deserve, and how the "Marvel Method" made Kirby and Ditko uncredited co-writers, and how Lee wouldn't be poo poo without them. The truth definitely lies somewhere in the middle. Stan's writing was a product of its time, but he never advanced or improved from his '60s heyday. He didn't care that much about continuity early on and desperately needed an editor, wrote horrible female characters, and kept falling back to clunky pieces of dialogue (like multiple characters always saying "You do that little thing!"). And despite all that, Kirby's dialogue and general writing was even clunkier, especially in the '70s when contemporary writers like O'Neil, Conway, and Starlin had already advanced the style.

I still think of a crowd of characters in one of Kirby's Fourth World books introducing themselves one by one in the corniest ways, like one kid saying "And *I* am the one they call Flippa Dippa!"
