Are there any melee specialists in the game, like someone who would rarely draw a ranged weapon? Or is this just not that kind of game?

You could play an Arc Hunter with Assassin's Cowl or Liar's Handshake which allows you to mostly ignore guns and depending on how far into endgame activities you go you might never need to play anything else.

Sounds like you want to play a Titan; they have the most melee friendly abilities. While the game is primarily a shooter, there are swords and glaives you can equip, and with the proper builds you can use your melee abilities almost 100% of the time. The solar subclass' hammers are probably the easiest to get started with.

There are ways of playing hunter and never running out of knives as long as you keep hitting stuff with them, and also bonkhammer 40,000 if you're a titan.

Solar warlocks can get silly fast refresh on their melee if they have an incandescent weapon, and void can get a funky loop of gods / grenade / melee recharging each other, but nothing really on the scale of solar titans & hunters.

First time running Warlords Ruin. 4 drops. 4 arm armor. What the gently caress.

Armor is the most useless drop in the game, I've been using the same set for years. I dont want anymore. I want guns.

It's very possible to do a fully melee oriented build, especially nowadays with Strand Titan. You'll want SOMETHING that can hit at range to compliment it, but you can do most content by just beating the hell out of things.

Just be aware that it'll take some doing, and it'll be a bit before you have all of the parts needed that such a build requires.

I’ve had a good time with vexcalibur as a melee only build. Once it gets going the overshield complements you being in the middle of everything.

off the top of my head:

If you're talking about true, pure melee and actively not shooting:

Titans have four exotics: Insurmountable Skullfort that fully refunds arc melees on kill and Stronghold that boosts swords stats and allows you to heal after blocking

Warlocks:

Winter's Guile: boosts damage after each melee kill
Necrotic Grips: poisons enemies that spread said poison when they die

Aside from the mentioned Liar’s build, there's a sword focused Void Hunter add clear build that uses Gambler's dodge, Radiant Dance Machines with invis dodge and shadow dive. Essentially, the loop is:

- dodge near an enemy to get smoke bomb back and activate multi dodge
- shadow dive to apply weaken
- kill enemies to extend multi dodge timer and refresh smoke (a sword like Goldtusk that can get tireless blade/chain reaction is good here)
- go back to step 1

It's been fun to use in Onslaught so far.

Is triton vice good now? I remember it being straight trash when it released.

To build on my above post:

You're going to want to unlock Strand by doing the Lightfall campaign, get the Banner of War Aspect and then pick up a glaive. Glaives have improved melee attacks and aren't that difficult to come by - you can get a very solid craftable one (which means you can pick any perks you want) from the Witch Queen campaign. Eventually you'll probably want to trade it out for one of the Exotic Glaives, likely Vexcalibur or Winterbite, depending on how dedicated to Melee you are. As for Exotic Armors, you'll want either Wormgod Caress or Synthoceps, both of which are unfortunately random drops but can be purchased directly from a vendor in the Tower (although not cheaply).

These things combined will make you into an extremely tough and very damaging melee combatant.

I was using Triton Vice for a bit, it's pretty fun. The Hunter Exotic Glaive pairs well with it, allowing a huge AoE burst if you kill an opponent with the amped up seeker shot. Other benefits to running arc are that you can get amplified and then generate orbs from getting kills while amplified, allowing your glaive to generate orbs with multikills. I would use it in Onslaught Regular up until wave 30 or 40, and swap to something more traditional. As cool as you feel zipping around the battlefield hitting things with a stick and making occasional large arc explosions, eventually you reach the point where a Splinter Knight, Yellow Bar Ogre, or Wizard shows up and annihilates you before you get close. Not enough sustain.

Another melee build I've played around with was Vexcalibur with ACD-10 Feedback Fence with a void subclass build. You can either use the shield generation from Vex, use a Bulwark finisher to get a void overshield you maintain with more melee kills, or you can use the "when you have low health, kills grant you an overshield". Add to that devour and you're usually running around surviving a lot while punishing whatever trash hits you with melee attacks.

Main problem I have with these builds is you're often missing the means to deal with champions, which, while a glaive shield lets you tank some pretty serious punishment (unstoppable ogre stomps, stuff like that) any concerted fire from other directions or splash damage (surrounded or getting assailed by wizards) will kill you pretty fast. Though a glaive is a special ammo weapon, it can't crit and doesn't have splash damage, which makes its shooting damage profile pretty meh. Also, even with the full auto melee setting, occasionally the glaive will do 3 strikes and "hang"

I AM THE SCALES OF JUSTICE, CONDUCTOR OF THE CHOIR OF DEATH!

Just gonna mention it, Throwing Hammer + Severance Enclosure absolutely rules this season. It's a melee build with pretty great red bar clearing in the form of chain reaction explosions from a single throwing hammer that you can pick back up and toss again almost instantly! Toss in Sunshot for ranged backup and you're basically golden.

Real cool system. I’ll eventually get it from giving out commendations but it’s really loving slow

This season's ritual sword is nice as well. Throw a caster projectile into a bunch of baddies, and get an overshield refresh every time something explodes.

I really like caster swords, shame the arc & solar ones aren't available any more. The arc one (temptation's hook) is loving broken if you can hit a boss with a charged projectile and have boss spec and vorpal, something breaks in the calculations and takes off a huge chunk of health over time. Switching between that and Witherhoard + catalyst is one of my favourite non-legendary loadouts because it does so much DoT burn.

I haven't had a tonne of chance to play this season compared to others, but the highest rank requires a commendation score of 1800 and I have nearly 2000. I very rarely finish an activity without some sort of token commend being throw at me and to others as a minimum. Maybe just lovely luck because yeah, they be getting thrown around everywhere I'm at.

imho onslaught should be 30 waves, I think the loot is good but the double chests should be at 30 and that being the last wave. An hour to complete an activity like this is just entirely too long.

I'm definitely by far having the most fun I ever have with Destiny, though I did much prefer older expansions stories and settings. It's amazing not having to care about the pinnacle grind. In the past I never had much time to chase after guns I wanted because I was so busy each week trying to raise my light level (and the frustration of not getting the slot you need.....).

If anything were to happen to Destiny, there is nothing out there even remotely close to replace it with. Especially with loadouts now, there are just so many ways to build your science fantasy shooter guy, with vert different styles of play.

Wish I could get a couple friends to play with me again, but they haven't played much at all in years and I think "what should I do first?" is still pretty overwhelming for some new and returning players. No idea how Destiny could improve this though.
