Came across this pre-draft podcast interview with Dylan Laube (RB from New Hampshire who went to the Raiders in the 6th) that I thought was interesting. It's fun hearing the perspective of a fringe player who's hoping to make it but could have very easily gone undrafted. What his time at school and running up to the draft was like. Versus an MHJ or someone who was destined for the NFL from birth and has been a giant celebrity for several years already.

this was cool, a neat perspective on the process.

I've heard good things about him, watched some of his tape but it's so hard to evaluate guys from tiny schools like this. honestly didn't know UNH was a thing until I heard about him

I mean UNH is very much not a thing (in terms of football) which is the whole point :) I was surprised to hear Chip Kelly did a stint there. And I’m from right next door in northern Massachusetts. *Literally* nobody is following this school, even the locals, and dude got himself drafted.

there was a funny little UNH mafia/coaching tree, it's where Chip got his break as OC, with Ryan Day as QB. they're both from NH.

Pretty interesting story about the draft in the athletic, where a reporter was given significant access into the entire process for the Rams.

Some interesting tidbits:

They have a custom software for tracking every tiny bit of information about a prospect, developed by their analytics team, called JAARS (Joint After Action Review System, quite a name). The system makes heavy use of color gradients that indicate how scouts feel about the player: positive stuff in more eye catching colors, negative stuff in less, so you can see at a glance, without reading the extremely wordy of school style scouting reports, how people in the organization are feeling about that player. It has expandable tabs and hosts every single bit of information and opinions on a player. They also make heavy use of emojis, which is pretty funny. The idea is that you can instantly get a feel for a player without all the scouting jargon, which Snead has grown to hate.

Before that system, they used magnets on a giant whiteboard.

The Rams only send a few people to the senior bowl, since now the entire thing is filmed constantly, which allows them to review and process the tape much more quickly. They only send the people they do to essentially talk to other people in the industry and collect rumors or any information they're offered.

Some college teams are very generous with granting access to facilities, staff, and players to scouts. Some are not.

The strength coaches are highly valued by scouts. In most cases they spend more time with prospects than any other coaches, ahi they know them well. But even more valuable, they know their workout habits and the status of their bodies/muscles. Which players easily put on muscle and which don't, which have room to put on muscle and which are maxed out, which players might have issues with maintaining muscle or putting on fat, etc.

The Rams use a personality/emotional intelligence/leadership test called HEXACO. They also conduct learning assessments to test a prospect's abilities in terms of learning new plays and schemes.

Part two will be here next Friday I believe.

Yeah she's awesome, although overall sometimes I feel the Rams coverage can be a bit lacking in the Athletic. Probably because it's not a team known for having tons of fans.

Really interested to see part two, I'm hoping there's a bit more juice and insight in that one.

i'm just envious LAR has a dedicated beat writer and not the rotation of other cities' beat writers providing coverage

was probably inevitable with the NYT acquisition, but i am constantly wondering why i'm paying a sub for a website that now throws just as many ads at me as ESPN but barely covers the teams i follow

yeah the ads are loving annoying, that's been driving me crazy. it used to be a much more premium platform in that respect. And I agree, some teams are very poorly represented. Jourdan is great for example but she doesn't actually put that much out

on the other hand, there are deals right now for twenty bucks for a year. I spend twice that much on beer for a single weekend, or ordering some delivery. So i think the value is still there for the most part especially since I read about a lot of sports, not just football. And a lot of teams in those sports.

i actually think the illegal streaming sites are better than sites like people these days, since they aren't quite on the cutting edge in terms of the endless ways you can ruin someone someone's experience

like yeah they have unwanted popups and probably some anime sex game gif prominently displayed, but at least there are no surprise full size popup ads with autoplay video and floating ads with close buttons so small they are literally impossible to tap on a phone

I feel like I’ve been stringing together various $1/mo Athletic deals for the last 3 years so it’s whatever to stay subscribed. The Pats have dedicated writers so that’s nice. I’ve never been blown away by their reporting but I will say they were very insistent that New England was drafting a QB and probably Maye all offseason. It will be interesting to see if coverage changes now that they aren’t dealing with the number 1 media hater in all of pro sports.

The nonstop ads do bug me. Like scrolling an article on my phone there is a huge rear end full screen ad every other paragraph. The whole contract of the internet was you have to deal with a dogshit ad infested actively user-hostile experience but at least the content is free. Or pay for a sub and be treated with basic dignity. Now the ads are ubiquitous no matter what. To be fair that seems to be where everything is going, it’s not just them. Doesn’t mean I have to like it. If I ever run out of 90% off deals I’m probably canceling.

how? I got the $20/year deal back when the NYT bought them out, but after that they don't let you take any of the deals if you're already subscribed. Do you let your subscription run out and then renew via a deal or what?
