Thank you to those that actually take the time to respond to these crazies with a well-researched e-mail that refutes their bullshit. As ultimately futile as it might be, I really enjoy the smackdowns and look forward to doing likewise when I receive my next right winger extended family email horseshit rant.
I wish I had kept it, but a few years ago I went back and forth with a right-winger family member over Oliver North (dated subject, I know). Naturally Oliver North is the Greatest Hero That Walked The Earth After Reagan.

See, this is the real problem. They send some contentless jab about a retarded talking point (in this case, "gently caress poor people") and are literally immune to any facts or evidence to the contrary. I just want to lash out in some completely non-constructive way just to elicit any kind of response, hoping that it might actually get them to reconsider their criminal ignorance. Unfortunately, the whole thing is just counter productive.
I had an uncle tell me literally that my argument was less valuable because I was more educated. It's so retarded.

Small portions of the structure have been completed and inmates are already beginning to fill its cells. But they're no ordinary inmates. They're American citizens that have been caught and identified as Activist Conservatives by the Obama Administration. THAT'S RIGHT! They are beginning to target everyone who disagrees with them politically and PUTTING THEM IN PRISON!!!
We were able to secure a private interview with one inmate. For the safety of his family, we'll call him "John". John claims he had been surfing the government website "www.cars.gov" just hours before a SWAT team busted down his door and arrested him, and that officials have refused to state the charges against him. He believes that after surfing a number of Conservative Activist websites, he visited cars.gov and the website picked up on this previous web history information. Again, officials refused to speak with us on the subject.
I suggest that you start watching what you do and say on the Internet. Big Brother has a way of intercepting free speech going through the Internet and letting the Government know who sent it. Too non-believable and too few statistics or facts that the person will (probably) not look up.
I would go with...
"BILL HR 3501 will make it illegal to criticize the new health plan"
"It would create a new federal prison camp, some already under construction (picture) that would house prisoners from the new secret and unaccountable court system..."
Or something to that affect.

Since we were unable to secure any interviews with any of the inmates, we talked to the family of one prisoner. For the safety of him and his family, we'll call him "John". Since John is the breadwinner for the family, his wife and children will need to find some way to pay the mortgage soon.
There is no way to tell how many arrests have been made or how many inmates are within the walls of this new prison camp. All information about this facility are covered under "Executive Privilege" and therefore impossible to obtain, even with a Freedom of Information Act request.

I like the new formatting! It adds a definite air of legitimacy.
Be sure to keep https://www.cars.gov hyperlinked, just to scare the poo poo out of them as a single stray click may send them to that deathtrap of a website!
What is a good image host that can handle the bandwidth of a million Activist Conservatives making GBS threads themselves? If one of you has your own host, we can also track the number of people trying to access it (or any future images from SA generated chain mails) and see how popular it really gets.
edit: and report their IP addresses to the government hurr hurr hurr

quote:
US Tax System Explained with Beer
Our Tax System Explained: Bar Stool Economics
Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:
The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that's what they decided to do.
The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers,' he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20.' Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.
The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free.
But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?'
They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer.
So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.
And so:
The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.
'I only got a dollar out of the $20,'declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!'
'Yeah, that's right,' exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too.
It's unfair that he got ten times more than I got' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!'
'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!'
The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.
The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed.
For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.
Would a chatlog be kosher for this thread? It isn't very long, especially if I were to edit it, but it really illustrates quite clearly the mentality of a lot of the Glenn Beck audience.

Would a chatlog be kosher for this thread? It isn't very long, especially if I were to edit it, but it really illustrates quite clearly the mentality of a lot of the Glenn Beck audience.

And, of course, another e-mail forward that wasn't written by who the e-mail claims. The oldest known version was apparently a letter sent to the Chicago Tribune (and the submitter didn't even claim to be the author).

I pretty much never ever read chatlogs because they are invariably self-serving and uninteresting, so I want to be clear that I am not posting this because I believe my arguments are particularly witty, insightful, or biting (though I am proud of when I got him to defend slavery). I do however believe that my friend who I had this argument with represents one of the more cerebral variety of the GOP protesters against healthcare reform (no, really, I have known him a long time and he is not normally as frighteningly stupid as this may make him seem), and for that reason I think it's worthy of analysis. I've re-read his arguments a number of times and I keep coming back to the conclusion that the people who oppose healthcare reform are unanimously misinformed, misguided, or are deliberately and dishonestly trying to perpetuate misinformation and poor critical thinking skills among other people by any means available.
edit: gently caress me that is rather a lot of scrolling. here, you can read it here if you choose: http://pastebin.com/zEL4EESd

David R. Kamerschen, Ph.D.
Professor of Economics

I love that the first google hit for his name is his university web page, the very first words of which are:
quote:
David R. Kamerschen
Complete vitae available online. Contrary to Internet folklore, Dr. Kamerschen is NOT the author of "Tax Cuts: A Simple Lesson in Economics" or “Bar Stool Economics” or anything similar to that. Additionally, he does NOT know who wrote it and he has no opinion on its merits.
