shizen posted:are there any free instructional videos online for basic moves to just learn the sport better? Not really subs but more positioning, guard passes, sweeps ext. i've been looking but personally i feel single technique videos en masse don't really do much to help you understand the sport, although i guess if you suffer through watching a ton of them then eventually it will come together as you watch more matches. i think i would recommend youtubing sweeps, passes, positioning keywords and looking at whatever you find interesting and then try to find matches with commentators. grappling competition DVDs sometimes have commentating for the finals matches, sometimes for the entire event, i know grapplersquest does but i've also been rather disappointed with the quality of commentating from them so take that as you will. ADCC 2009 i think it was had some pretty good commentating. figure out what in a given match you want to know more about and look up those specific things. the commentators should help you figure out keywords to search for based on what they're saying when calling the action, for example you may want to know more about the deep half-guard then the commentators could perhaps mention the x-guard and how there are sweeps and etc etc Opal fucked around with this message at 16:09 on Feb 15, 2011 |

shizen posted:are there any free instructional videos online for basic moves to just learn the sport better? Not really subs but more positioning, guard passes, sweeps ext. Not free but you could look into one of the various online training site(Jean Jacques Machado Online. Draculino BJJ Training,Marcelo Garcia in Action or Gracie University. There's a lot of good instruction on youtube but without some background in the sport it's sometimes hard to know what's good or bad, and most instructionals that come out focus on more advanced/niche stuff than what you need to work on as a beginner. Failing that I'd pick up Jiu Jitsu University by Saulo Ribeiro. edit: It's not impossible to learn jiu jitsu with out an instructor(most people outside of Brazil or California until the mid 90's instruction consisted of 1 or 2 dvd sets and training with a real instructor for two weeks a year, there's more instruction out there now, but it's difficult, especially if you can't find someone competent to train with occasionally to point out your mistakes. dokomoy fucked around with this message at 18:25 on Feb 15, 2011 |

Just please do not use submissions 101. They are popular but riddled with errors or techniques done at a blue belt level. Funny story, my old instructor started training back in the mid 90's. He won most technical submission at a tournament. The submission: triangle choke. He told us that the blue belts in his academy now were basically on par with brown belts back then. His first trip to brazil, he said he couldn't hook flip old man white belts. This sport has really exploded. Xguard86 fucked around with this message at 19:09 on Feb 15, 2011 |

shizen posted:are there any free instructional videos online for basic moves to just learn the sport better? Not really subs but more positioning, guard passes, sweeps ext. Sweeps and passes are fairly easy to find, but positioning is sort of the meat and potatoes of the sport that can be harder to find information on. You pretty much have to do it to get it. Best way would probably be to watch matches on youtube. Intermediate and advanced nogi and purple and brown gi. I can't really recommend black belt level matches just because gi is so relatively slow and steady it can be hard to figure out why the guys are doing what they're doing. Purples and browns are going to do some crazy stuff but make less mistakes, and they don't game plan as well/ have as much riding on the matches so they're more willing to open up. The Grapplers Quest channel might be a good one to check out.

Anyone else think that Roger Gracie deserves a post of his own for his place in the BJJ world right now? Btw, the "orange shorts" guy in the Marcelo Garcia HL was UFC lightweight/welterweight Diego Sanchez. Roger Gracie teaching the cross choke from mount, make sure the closed captioning (English subtitles in this case) option is enabled; the part before is a short HL of him tapping dudes with it and the standard "don't try this at home" blurb Roger vs. Jacare highlights from ADCC (no-gi) 2005, featuring a hanging (not exactly flying) guillotine attempt, a back suplex and one of the more epic piggyback RNCs ever just for Renzo Gracie flipping out off-camera My favorite Sherdog quote on how to tap Roger: "Ask him if this rag smells like chloroform, then apply puppet strings and a video camera (Warning: Do not actually attempt to place submission hold onto Roger's unconscious body, it will only escape and reverse you)"

Lots of crazy moves work. It just seems like a silly move to go considering your options at the time and the large amount of risk involved. Maybe I'll even give it a try next week. But its definitely a gimmick technique.

I usually work high on the back with my legs because they're much stronger than my arms and it gives me more options to catch people sneakily. Not saying that's a better gameplan than working the RNC or threatening with the gi, but I don't feel like it's so much worse that it deserves to be shut down just 'cause it's on an Ari Bolden link. 2 arms are better than 1. 4 arms are better than 2. :goro:

Since there really isn't any other thread to put this in... Two girls qualified for the Iowa Wrestling tournament, the first two ever. Just qualifying is a pretty big deal. The tournament started this morning and one of them got pinned in the first round against a ranked guy. The other won, because her opponent, who is 35-4 and had a decent shot at making the finals, forfeited due to not wanting to wrestle a girl, saying that wrestling a girl disagreed with his faith (http://iowaprepsports.com/featured/2011/02/17/linn-mar-student-cites-conscience-faith-in-not-wrestling-girl). Stupid kid, hope he loses his next match at never qualifies again. Leave the tournament to people that actually want to be there.
