So, I'm asking for a friend uuuhm, if I want to go from PC to a new MacBook Pro using Office 2011 connecting to Exchange with Outlook wouldn't be a problem right? How about connecting to network shares or connecting to a Windows domain, how would that be handled?

Network shares are connected by doing a Finder> Go> Connect to server: smb://server/share You should be good.

Also, any applications can use iCloud to store data because Apple's opened up the API. I could see 5GB disappearing pretty quickly depending on how much crap you want to store in the cloud. The second screenshot here seems to show mail counting against the cap, but you may be right, might be a beta limitation.

I realize this is somewhat but does anyone have a good SSD icon before I make one? The fact that Lion still ships with the default "Macintosh HD" and ancient icon when probably half the machines Apple sells use SSDs is kind of silly.

Trying to go through the "connect to server" dialog while on VPN wouldn't work although it identified the server correctly but couldn't connect to it. VPN connected perfectly, no issue there, I just want the network shares from a Mac using VPN to connect to Exchange and be able to use the network shares. Is there anything to do in Windows Server to make this work? Is there something I'm missing, like how the hell network-drives work on Mac?

I had that problem as well over a Cisco VPN. I created a DNS entry for my server, but you should also be able to substitute the IP address for the server name. Something like SMB://127.0.0.1/sharename

Can save the search for later too to save time if you repeat this often. (I personally hate m3u files cause I accidentally add dupes to iTunes all the time).

I never used Spaces in SL but Mission Control's version of it is amazing in Lion. I'm relatively new to Mac and all but goddamn it's handy to have basically an unlimited amound of desktops - on two monitors to boot - and different wallpapers for each one to signify which one I'm using at the moment. And I can switch between them by nudging my mousewheel. Loving this.

Annoying useability oversight with getting rid of the default Applications folder in the launchbar and replacing it with launchpad. You used to be able to pretty much install an app by just dragging it to the applications folder in the launchbar. It does not work by dragging it to the launbchpad. Of course its easy enough to fix, but I've just gotten off the phone from my dear grandma who's hopelessly confused about how to install an app like she used to, because even though launchpad LOOKS like its a folders and files thing, its more akin to the pretend files/folders setup in windows 3.1 (Sort of, in that it doesnt map to the realworld arangement of stuff in Applications).

It does for me for L4D2, but not for L4D1 or TF2 (Geforce 320m). Performance doesn't seem to have improved with Lion, either. If anything it's slower, the latter two games were unplayable at my previous settings.

I set up Mail.app (new Mail/ Lion) with a gmail account. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious... but how do I make it behave exactly like my iPad? I only want 30 days or 3 months or some predefined amount of time's archived emails to be downloaded, and the rest just wait for me on the server in case I search. When I used the account it downloaded my entire 2 gigs of email; I don't want to waste space.

Although I'm not going to install Lion until it gets some serious patching I realized my Macbook Pro only has 1 gig of RAM so I'm getting a couple of 2 gig chips today. I didn't know about the Core 2 Duo requirement until yesterday so I was relieved so see I have a 2.16 C2D, probably one of the first MBP models that had one. I'm looking forward to upgrading when things are not such a mess. My Mac experience started with the Lisa so there's something cool about keeping up with the latest version of the OS.

Well, I just found out that Lion and Xcode 4.1 completely remove MPI. Hope macports will get me OpenMPI back easily enough. I'm getting really concerned about Apple's idea for the future of its professional user base. Not just with this little MPI removal, but the other signs that they're shifting focus. I don't want to have to wind up stuck with just Linux down the road.

Hooked my Ipad2 up to the new MBP for the first time today and got this error "iTunes cannot read the content on this iPad...please restore". I'd been hooking it up to my Windows 7 laptop since I got it with no problems whatsoever. It doesn't work on the Windows laptop now either, same error. I would just restore it but I've downloaded a lot of apps and have some pretty important .pdfs which are from after the last time I had synced it. I'm also in a particularly lovely situation where I can't get any internet whatsoever for personal items(deployed on a ship). Am I just poo poo out of luck for syncing up to my laptops? I'd imagine I have the newest iTunes on my MPB since I got it July 1st. And I was using the iPad to download apps and such in Crete and Spain not too long ago. So it should have the latest firmware aswell. All I want to do is put porn on it:(

Is there any way to get 10.7 Mail to integrate COMPLETELY with Gmail? Like for example, now when I right click on a message and tell it to "Archive", when I look at the Gmail web UI it puts the message into a folder called [Imap]/Archive. If I draft a message, it gets put into [Imap]/Drafts instead of Gmail's "drafts". ... actually, that's pretty much my only two gripes. I can understand if the Drafts thing isn't possible to integrate, but is there any way to get the "Archive" function to not put mail into the [Imap]/Archive folder, and instead just mark it unread and hide it form the "inbox"? I don't think I'm articulating this the best way, so hopefully someone knows what I'm trying to get at. This wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't still use the Web UI on campus and I have a thing against extraneous folders where I don't need them. e: I guess by "folders" I mean "labels" in gmail's case. e2: Oh, also "Deleted Messages" (where Mail puts its trash) vs Gmail native "Trash" some kinda jackal fucked around with this message at 21:39 on Aug 9, 2011 |

Ahh, I love a good reactionary piece: http://tidbits.com/e/12398 OH NOES, MAH WINDOWSSS The problem Apple is trying to solve is user process management. We're getting to the point in the game where you can have dozens upon dozens of applications open, all with their own windows and stuff in them. In previous incarnations of the OS you, mentally, had to manage what was open/running and what you should quit. Now, when an application is truly not being used, the system can quietly spin it down to consume less resources, or process handles or what have you. You, the user, don't have to think about process management. You don't have to think about it on your phones, why should your desktop suddenly be any different? Furthermore, if you really [i]do[/] need it, it's state is saved and with one or two clicks you're right back to where you were again, sometimes you might not even realize you've left the application. Yes, there are bugs and edge cases where this isn't going to work perfectly. Those rules can be tweaked, interfaces can change (I agree with some of the commenters that the icon should stay in the cmd-tab/dock for a bit -- perhaps fade out?). The thing that irks me though is when people whine and complain about 'the new' without really understanding the focus behind it.
