Hey there McMadCow, I see you post on Slashdot too! *EDIT* And from the Death of the DSLR Article: "Of course, this changes post-processing a bit more… you’ll just spend more time in Lightroom finding the best 1 image out of 200 instead of the best 1 out of 20. But, to me, this is a good problem to have! Maybe it’s just me, but I love hanging out in Lightroom, drinking good tea or coffee, and flipping through the day’s shots to find my favorites. Good times!" What a completely excellent and well thought out reason for buying a camera. squidflakes fucked around with this message at 23:23 on Jan 5, 2012 |

Canon is actually marketing a printer that does exactly this, printing stills from videos! I bet he'll be first in line to get one.

If you're going through and choosing stills from video, isn't that just like photography in the first place? What a useless middle step for people who apparently can't think fast enough to photograph in real-time.

There was a magazine cover a year or so ago on a big name magazine (Rolling Stone or something) that was a still from a video. It's obviously not the kind of thing that will replace still cameras, but it's not fantasy talk. I could see the use for it in sports especially.

I'm not saying pulling a good still from video is a bad idea - I'm sure there are some iconic images that were captured that way. I'm saying this guy is nuts for preferring to sort through 200 pictures in Lightroom to get one good one over some manageable keep rate based on actually thinking about the picture one is taking while the camera is in-hand.

the posted:I'm looking for a good light meter program for ANDROID. Does anyone have any ideas? There's a few. I use one called "Light meter" (funnily enough) that cost $2 or something on my desire hd, my friend uses another newer free one on here SGSII that is just as good. The limiting factor is the phone hardware. My desire hd light sensor has a lower limit of EV-2 and an upper of EV-12, and since the sensor doesn't give an over- or under- signal, it means I'm limited to EV 3-11, which is not hugely useful, so check the hardware before spending any money. edit: the top two results on app brain when you type in "light meter". If none are available for you, then maybe your phone hardware doesn't allow it Captain Postal fucked around with this message at 06:43 on Jan 6, 2012 |

So there is a drone helicopter now with a 1.8Gigapickle sensor? http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/27/us-armys-a160-hummingbird-drone-copter-to-don-1-8-gigapixel-cam/?ncid=txtlnkusenga00000002 http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/13/darpa-develops-a-1-8-gigapixel-digicam-and-no-you-cant-check/ engaget posted:Yeah, I know you thought your Hello Kitty digicam was some hot stuff, but believe it or not the kids at Darpa have even got that one beat. Called ARGUS-IS (both named after the mythological eye guy and an acronym for Autonomous Real-time Ground Ubiquitous Surveillance - Imaging System) this guy straps a 1.8 gigapixel camera to the bottom of an A-160T Hummingbird robot helicopter. The device is able to hover at high altitude (over 15,000 feet) for up to 20 hours -- keeping tabs of an area of over a hundred square miles. The frame rate is 15 fps and the "ground sample distance" is 15 centimeters -- each pixel represents about six inches. The sheer amount of data taken in by a camera like this is too large to be completely relayed to the ground, but users are able to define upwards of sixty-five independent video windows within the image and zoom in or out. Additionally, windows can be set to automatically track items such as moving vehicles, individuals, the books you get out of the library, and the items you pick up at 7-11 after a night out with the gang.

Some people are such arseholes. A drift photographer friend of mine posted this: "I have to add that Fredric is one of the genuinely nicest and most down to earth guys at his level in pro drifting. I got a personal Facebook message from him after the event thanking me for the shots I’d taken and wishing me all the best. I think several up and coming drivers could take a leaf from his book in how to keep grounded and levelled!" A fairly nice thanks no a nice person. The reply from a third party: "I don't know who you're on about, but tbf photographers should be thanking drivers for giving them a shot at a career with good opportunities" I cannot believe people think like this and think good photography is worthless and they 'deserve' it.

The worst part isn't when random outsiders think photographers should work for free or otherwise devalue their work... the worst is when photographers buy into it themselves.

There's all types out there.. the people who overvalue photography are just as infuriating. Wife has a friend who is stunned that I put my snapshots on the internet "for free" and without watermarks. My stuff is better in some ways to standard P&S fare, but it's so far from "professional" that I roll my eyes when this lady starts gabbing about how I could be making a ton of money with my pictures.

There hasn't been much "fun stuff" on the last few pages around here. Plenty of interesting and useful things to talk about, definately, but not very fun or optimistic. Seeing as it's a new year and apparently this is somehow related to a sense of optimism, tell us about a picture you were really happy you took - your first published photo, the first picture out of a new camera you felt you did right, or some other "I like my picture". In December I had a picture I took published on the cover of a scientific journal; the second issue of January for Applied & Environmental Microbiology has now been published online. It relates to a paper that I am not a co-author on, but I'm still pretty happy about it. My advisor (I'm a PhD student) said he'll get me a cover of the journal, which I plan to frame and hang in my office to impress visitors. I'm not refering to it as "my picture" because I transfered copyright to The American Society for Microbiology, which I think means they own it now. I hope this doesn't come off as bragging. Has anybody else had a picture of theirs on the cover of a journal or other publication, recently?
