But first, it looks like John's about to manage the unlikely and actually squash Bec Noir like a bug. I really did think Rose was intervening to keep John from killing him since they might need him for something she'd seen in a vision, but maybe this really is curtains for Noir.

I think I've turned into an angsty hipster. At least as far as homestuck goes.

MSPA going mainstream could actually be a good thing, because then the insufferable current fandom would become a minority and we would have more 'Normal people who happen to like homestuck'

'Normal' fans will never factor into how fandoms are perceived, since they're not the ones that command attention. See Star Trek, Wars, anime, MLP, homestucks.

The insufferable fandom is already the minority. The ratio of crazy to normal fans is never the problem, only the absolute quantity of crazies.

Jesus christ can you imagine how bad things would be if Homestuck had Startrek-amounts of fans? Given how the worst Homestuck fans are probably a lot weirder than the worst Trekkies... then again, maybe not. Maybe I just don't know enough about weird Trekkies.

The entry barrier's too high now. Maybe when it was shorter you could get regular people to read it, but now if the lunatic fandom doesn't scare them off, the 410k goddamn word count will. And the format is weird as hell, especially if you're unfamiliar with 1) webcomics, 2) CYOA forum games, 3) Old School adventure games.

I once tried to explain Homestuck to someone who didn't know what a webcomic was. It was unfruitful.

If it went mainstream, I might actually achieve my dream of having real life friends ask me to tell them about Homestuck. There are quite a few people that I want to introduce it to, but won't because I can't even get them to read loving Gunnerkrigg Court, much less the first act of Homestuck.

What Star Trek fandom lacks in concentrated horribleness, it makes up for in determination and longevity. Their insanity predates the internet, which means that they were codifying fandom concepts without any established precedent, in zines. They went to great lengths to tie together their community through the mail and occasional conventions, and any new inductee could only count on oral tradition to learn about the culture they had just entered, rather than having the option to go back to the original second-generation fan material. The comparative formality of print media compared to online media encouraged a certain decorum in their conduct which modern megafandoms appear to lack, but other than that they, hand in hand with Lord of the Rings enthusiasts, established the patterns that are still clearly in evidence to this day. If there's any qualitative difference, I'd say that it's become more common for fans to be exposed to the fandom than to the source material, and less common for genuine academic interest to cross paths with lay enjoyment.

It's fascinating stuff as long as you keep your hands relatively clean.

Homestuck's popular, but it's still pretty young, by fandom terms. MLP and Hetalia both probably have about the same amount of fanart, and they're both from the past couple of years.

Naruto and Harry Potter pretty much crush all the rest in sheer numbers.

I would assume that a big reason Homestuck and Pokemon get a lot of fanart, besides a large audience, is the easy-to-copy drawing style.

It's the same reason so many terrible deviantart types have styles copied from Sonic the Hedgehog or the Lion King.

Homestuck's fandom is really no worse than any other fandom. Trekkies can be pretty bad, Star Wars fans too. Hell, ever met a really dedicated Superman fan? I received a death threat from one for saying that I was not a big fan of Superman, and as far as I could tell he was serious. I'll take weird sexual fetishes over death threats any day.

My problem with the Homestuck fandom is that the average fan seems to be all and only about shipping. Can't I find someone who wants to do something other than talk about what characters they want to see loving?

That's what this thread is for. :shobon: Seriously, though, this thread is the furthest I'm willing to tread into the Homestuck fandom. At least everyone here tends to focus on plot and character development and non-"MY PRECIOUS GAY BABIES" stuff. There are occasional insightful gems on tumblr, but... well, it's tumblr, which is akin to panning for gold in a dung pile: once in awhile you hit something that's absolutely rich, but the rest of the time you're wading neck-deep through poo poo.

Synthbuttrange
May 6, 2007

There will always be a subset of fans who will ship characters, and there is another subset who will draw porn of their favourite characters. Some times these will intersect. All fandoms will have these groups. All of them. :negative:

Man, just be glad he didn't leave them as ten-year-olds, as they originally started as.

Seriously, though, I think this is just a function of which communities you go to. Tumblr attracts a very young crowd, so they're going to care more about shipping that we will. I bet if, say, Slashdot had a Homestuck thread (maybe they have, I haven't looked at that website in ten years), it would be about compiling lists about times Hussie made mistakes with the inventory modi.
