That's... some awful salary right there. Even the most simple tech support job gets you 9eur/h here and you get about 16eur/h for tutoring undergrads. Goddamn that sucks man.

Location: Greater Washington DC metro area with some openings in NY city and Baltimore. Who we are looking for: The number one requirement is client-facing ability. Dataprise places a great deal of emphasis on not being the creepy Geeksquad guys with no social skills. You must be able to work either on a team or on your own, a great many of the clients only have a single engineer on site at once. I have gone weeks without ever seeing another Dataprise employee. We need engineers with experience in designing, building, and managing Microsoft-oriented networks. Strong hands-on/practical experience with the following technologies: Windows Server 2003/2008, Exchange Server 2003/2007/2010, Active Directory, Citrix, Blackberry Server, Firewalls (Sonicwall, Watchguard, etc.), DNS, DHCP, VMWare experience preferred. They will pay for them. Do you like bonuses? They will give them. Do you like hot receptionists? They have them. Do you like having someone else to call when you're stuck on a problem and can't noodle it out? There are some god drat savants on staff. I certainly can't say that the company is flawless, but they definitely make a very conscious effort to make sure all of the engineers are taken care of. There is ample opporunity for advancement, there are regular morale-boosting events (i.e. they use the company card and find out just how much beer you can drink) and one of their hiring criteria is "must not be an rear end in a top hat." HR doesn't phrase it exactly like that, but you can tell that's what they're thinking. Contact: PM me so that I can get tasty tasty referral bonus. My little brother just reminded me about them the other day, since his roommate will be working there in development. Is it true that they push you to work considerably more than 40 hours/week, and are the Madison demographics skewed really heavy towards early-mid 20s male STEM majors due to the glut of young tech people EPIC employs?

I've never worked more than 40 hours, but it seems to vary wildly depending upon your role. Epic has a pretty balanced ratio of women to men, but it's definitely a younger crowd for the most part. I should also point out, because this might make all the difference for some people, that Epic's health insurance has no copays for any services, a $5 generic drug copay, and no deductible. Individual insurance is like $80 a month or something.

And yes, the Madison demo is basically middle-class white people who vote for democrats and think that this fact makes them radical leftists.

My little brother just reminded me about them the other day, since his roommate will be working there in development. I worked on the other side of Epic *nix team, supporting clients' *nix teams, so my experience should probably be taken with a grain of salt. The internal team presumably has a lot bullshit to deal with because they aren't tied to to the whims of clients. You'll be largely tasked with maintaining installations of Intersystems Cache--most of the base infrastructure of email, web, DNS, whatever is Microsoft. Cache is not widely used (~75 StackOverflow answers, less than 0.5 million Google results) and is closed-source, so no sleuthing your own answers. Its CLI doesn't follow *nix conventions at all, and the Epic code on top of it is designed to run on and only on VT220s, causing fun bugs like infinite loops if your terminal is wider than 80 characters. FWIW, if you've never worked with proper enterprise-y Unices (AIX, HP-UX, etc.), their userland tools pale in comparison to Linux, to maintain backwards compatibility with the 1980s. I was never particularly impressed by our internal *nix team. Systems seem largely set up (frequently incorrectly) and managed by hand, and they seemed starved for resources--Epic can afford to build Candyland and a fake river, but has to shuffle database installations between servers because only one server is capable of supporting more than 3 simultaneous users (not in general, this was a specific subgroup of servers, but it was still ridiculous). Demographics in *nix land skewed heavily male (something like 30:1 in my department) though not so much 20-something. Location: Dallas/Fort Worth area. Job Title: Senior Software Developer Who we are looking for: Although it's a generic title, you will be part of the presentation team, which is the team I'm on. We need a UI-minded person who has web development experiences as well as Java server-side experience, or at least server-side programming experience. Knowledge in Struts, Spring and Stripes (either all or one or the other) is a plus. Knowledge in accessibility and 508 compliance is a big plus. Why would you want to work here?: This is one of the best places I've worked. The company knows how to take care of you. You are discouraged from working late hours and it's a rarity to have people working on the weekends. Everyone is usually pretty great their job. Benefits are also really good, and you get free hours for training and they will pay for your certificates. We're usually one of Forbes's best places to work at. The company definitely will take care of you. Contact: Email me at laneshill@outlook.com

We have an open position for a Senior database role for our Oracle team at USAA in San Antonio, TX. One of our coworkers is switching areas internally in February, so we would like to have it filled by then. You can look at the description here: https://www.usaa.apply2jobs.com/profext/index.cfm?fuseaction=mExternal.showJob&RID=15019&CurrentPage=1 I'm on my phone so it's a pain to make my post here all formatted nicely but feel free to pm me with any questions you have and how much you need to know for each area (some of the preferred areas our team don't even have experience with yet). You can also ask general questions about the company itself or San Antonio life or whatever else comes to mind. Fun fact: We are rated, for the third year in a row, as the best place to work in IT by ComputerWorld. They have rented out Six Flags all three years for us to attend for free on a Saturday in September. Hoping for Sea World next year! kloa fucked around with this message at 16:22 on Oct 25, 2012 |
