Man I really wish I had the money to get a nice R/C car but just can't justify the expense.

Are there any cheap buggies or similar that I can get to just bash around in the backyard and chase my dog? Not worried about going out and doing any races or anything like that.

My awesome wife just got me a Slash Mike Jenkins Edition for my birthday and we are going to go watch the local stock 2wd class race tomorrow night. They astroturf it for a modified indoor "off-road" course. It is really popular, as it is in most places, and I cannot wait to see the action. Need to wait a couple weeks to get some income flowing, just separated from the Air force and moved, but I plan on racing myself as soon as possible.

Depends what cheap is for you. A Stampede VXL can be had brand new In The $300 range. Its about the best basher money can buy, replacement parts are plentiful and cheap too. There's also a buggy version that uses the same electronics that would be good too if you're hell bent on a buggy.

For my money a monster truck is always the best basher.

Hey guys, I'm new to RC, built up a DF-03ra chassis with a hobbywing 35A esc and 9T 4300kv motor. I've run it a few times and have worked out some kinks but now I have a more stubborn problem. My rear diff cover will not sit flush on top of the rear propeller joint, when I disassemble it and test fit it, it rocks back and forth on top of the shaft. I've cleaned all the parts involved because I figured it was just some dust or dirt buildup but it still will not sit in a way that keeps the side closed. The screw hole on that side of the chassis is now stripped but it was clear there was a ton of pressure on the cover and after some light bashing it stripped the threads and came up enough for me to notice the gap. Help me please goons!

What happens when you get ballsy and try to cross water without checking the depth? This. This is a shot from the same run I just posted but of my buddies Wraith. Axial Wraiths are big rear end trucks so this stuff was pretty deep (not to mention the water was close to freezing). It immediately shut the truck off and I thought my friend was going to have a heart attack. After the truck sat for a day it was fine and it ran for 2 hours today like nothing ever happened. He got lucky that he semi-water proofed it the day before this happened.

By the way, I've owned my Wraith for a little over a month now and including today's club run I've put about 8 miles (approximate) on it through all sorts of mud, water, rock....it even fell off a cliff during a bluff trail run. The truck runs great and I've never had a mechanical issue. I like it every bit as much as my scx10. It's become my go to trail truck while my scx10 is being turned into a pulling truck.

Here she is up above some river bluffs last weekend.

I won't clog up this thread with pictures but if anyone is interested I launched our club website 2 weeks ago and I have a poo poo load of pics and video. Check out https://www.showmescalers.com

EDIT - OnlyJuanMon, can you find a manual online? You can probably find the Losi part number there. I'm sure it's a standard screw that a decent hobby shop could find something the same size (they may even have the losi number).

That wraith is a beast. I don't know why they aren't watertight to begin with though. I've had my stampede through a shitload of water, even to the point of being submerged for a minute or two. Never had any issue besides the tires soaking up some h20 and going out of balance.

This condition seems to last forever too. I've never had a set of wheels spin properly after being soaked. I've even pulled the tires and dried the foam out and reglued to the best of my ability and they still wobble. Any advice?

The engine mount screws (holds block to engine mount) are 4-40x1/2" cap head screws, losi part # A6240. You'll also need a small ballstud washer, part # A6215. The screws that hold the mount to the chassis are FHCS 8-32x1/2", #A6262. The countersunk washers are # A6351.

Didn't see this till tonight. freakin long weekend of racing! The plex did an awesome job with this race. I loved the layout and everything flowed well considering the crazy number of entries (over 300!!!). We had a huge group of racers come over from Iowa... and came home with a bunch of hardware :). You're from STL right? I had a great race with one of your crew in mod truck, ended up running nose to tail the whole race with Gosch. Made a bobble and he got by with just under a minute on the clock, couldn't quite catch back up and finished ~2sec back in 6th place. Mod is no joke :aaa:.

Ended up dominating stock buggy. Won every qual and lead the main start to finish! Had a little pressure from second place near the mid point of the race, but held them off and broke away again. Interestingly enough I finished both mains (mod truck and stock buggy) with EXACTLY the same time, even on a big track like Omaha. I definitely need more work on my mod skills if I want to be competitive... it's tough to make use of all that power and still be consistent.

Needknees - Yeah, while I don't know Gosch personally I know he runs near the front at our track. Was Rod Rippee there? He is an AE driver that runs every week out here and is normally at the front of the pack. Congrats on the race, sounds like you did great. If you are running neck and neck with those guys you must be a heck of a driver.

Howser: That chassis is loving hot! I'm going to do some research on it myself and I may snag one. My scx10 is currently on the bench being turning into '79 Ford dually diesel pickup with weight box off the front for truck pulling. A co-worker is machining my dually adapter today at work so by tonight she should have dual swampers on the rear. My r/c club is co-promoting several big scaler competitions this summer so my scx10 is going to be pulling double duty as a 1.9 comp truck and 1.9 pull truck (with a few parts swaps).

As for the water in the tires thing, yeah it's tough to get it out. This is actually a good thing for a crawling truck though as it adds more weight to the wheels (assuming your servo can handle the load). The first trail run I had after I built the Wraith I had problems with my servo/BEC after getting the wheels wet as it just couldn't handle the weight. 2 weeks ago I installed a waterproof high-torque Hitec steering servo and an external BEC and it runs super smooth now. Those big & sticky 2.2 tires put a servo through hell.

I have decided to try and get back into the RC hobby after reading this thread.

I have an HPI racing Nitro rs4 3 type SS, I purchased it around 2004. I would like to fix this up and play with it again.
however I totally forgot what kind of parts i need to get it up and running. I can not find the correct type of carburator air filter, they no longer seem to make it any more. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLGB1&P=7 This is the closest thing I can find, is this the correct fit?

Secondly the Servos seem to be really weak or I am just not used to them any more. I think I would like to get 2 new servos. I currently have a tower hobbies 2TXP 2 channel pistol controller and the servos are Tower Hobbies TS-53 Standard Servo. There are about 100 different servers ranging from 9 bucks to hundreds. what is a good servo that are not too expensive but better than what I have now that will fit my car?

Third, the plastic body shell is broken and cracking, what type of body shell do I need to look for that will fit my car? I dont mean like Mustang or Nissan or something, I mean the shell models that will fit my car.

I am sure I am forgetting parts that I will need but any other tips to get an 9 year old car up to its former glory?

I've been promoting my track's upcoming race and we hit the 200 entry mark on RCSignup like two weeks ago. This race has never gotten more than 120, and we're getting messages and calls daily from people asking if they can still race if they didn't sign up online. We scheduled it for one day, so it looks like we're going to have to knock it down to 2 quals instead of 3. Since I'm calling/administering and probably racing some, too, I'm in for a long, long day this Saturday. This is probably gonna burn me out on off-road, which I'm already getting close to anyway.

Hey now, better you have this problem for a one day thing versus putting in a ton of prep/promo work winding up with 2-3 cars per class and a failure of an event! I see this happen quite a bit at poorly run places around here. Our big offroad track gets tons of entries every week for club racing, and 250+ for some national races. The little tracks get 6-7 people on a good race day.

Have fun!

Bodies are easy, just go to the HPI site or any body specialist like Pro-Line and look for 200mm bodies. Pick what looks cool and you're off.

The air filter you found is probably the right one, call HPI customer service to be absolutely sure if you want.

For the servos, the ones that came in the car are standard servos, meaning they're slow and weak basically. You probably don't need to replace either one if you don't remember them having any problems, but if you want to swap them out for cheap standard servos or go for a faster servo on the steering. If you're positive you'll be driving a lot think about metal gears for the steering servo. You probably won't need digital servos or really power servos.

The 22's build great, I've only had one issue with all the 22 kits I've built and it was on this current buggy - Servo mount plastics had a mount hole plugged up. Easy fix, just drilled it out. The quality is great and everything goes together easily :)

I have heard of people having trouble with the steering links popping off on the 22SCT. You can round off the edge of the steering rack for more clearance at full lock. Blog post about it here: http://losiracing.blogspot.com/2012/08/tlr-22-sct-steering-rack-modification.html . Another thing people are doing is shaving the ballcups down a bit to give a little more room for them to rotate when the suspension is fully compressed. http://losiracing.blogspot.com/2012/08/tlr-22-sct-steering-ball-cup.html

That's awesome! Sounds like you're going to have a great race. Don't worry about dropping a qual off, everything is usually decided by two quals anyway. At the recent Novak race in Omaha I just attended they had to drop quals down to 5min instead of 6min, and no one really bitched about it. There's only so much time in a day and most people don't want to sit at a track for 16+ hrs just to get another five minutes of track time.

That servo will be fine for you.

Been awhile since I raced nitro but the percent is the actual nitro methane versus the rest of the lube/oil mix. 30% nitro is more potent than 20% but it doesn't have as much lube and generally runs a bit hotter.

At least I think I remember that right. Back in my nitro monster truckin' days I always 20 percent Blue Thunder or 30 percent O'Donnell.

Like ColonelJohnMatrix said, pretty much any servo will be fine, I would stay away from the cheapest ones just so you have a bit of an upgrade (and anything apart from the standard servos will be an upgrade).

As for fuel, 20% is pretty standard. For the plug, if you're in a cold area get a 'cold' standard plug (not a 'turbo' plug). When it warms up get a normal plug. If it gets hot where you are get a 'hot' plug. These do make a difference in the temperature extremes! the HPI 1705 plug is a general purpose plug, just get something similar from any manufacturer. Make sure it's not a 'turbo' plug and you should be fine.

But yeah basically you should be ready to go after that.

Oh. My.
Plug ratings don't really parallel actual temperature like that. A 'hot' plug will retain more heat and be more likely to ignite the fuel mixture during the compression stroke. This makes tuning a bit easier, and helps the engine run in lower temps. A colder plug will give the engine better run time but will be more difficult to tune. They're also nice to have for very warm ambient temps. For the most part you see people running hotter plugs because they're easier to get a close tune on.

Generally your engine manufacturer will have a recommended plug for whatever engine / fuel combo you're running. Check their website to see if they list something.

Here's some good reading on glow plugs: http://www.osengines.com/accys/choosing-glowplugs.html
