I was dead-set on getting one of the new iPads until this thread. A few guys mentioned that Safari was over-reloading pages or something. Then a few of you mentioned the limited amount of RAM. But now I'm feeling the urge to get one again. Have either of those issues proven to be wait-until-February-worthy issues?

One is probably a bug and the other one can be safely filed in the "who cares" category. If you want it, get it. If you don't like it just return it.

I haven't really had any problems with excessive reloading in Chrome. Apple should have given the Air 2GB of RAM, but 1GB is serviceable.

The iPad Air is awesome. If you want one, get one. No regrets here. I guess I just don't open a ton of tabs but I never really run into the reloading, and even when I do it's never frustrating.

I usually only have about 3 or 4 tabs at a time, admittedly, but I rarely notice tab refreshing to be that bad unless I've gone off and played a game that really pushes things then gone back to Safari or if I haven't used it in a day or two.

The Retina mini that I've got goes noticeably yellower near the bottom of the screen in portrait. Apples quality control seem to have been on holiday lately.

This is the glue not having fully cured and it fades after a little while; it was a problem (Gluegate) with, I think, the iPhone 5 when it was first released, too. It's because Apple is shipping this poo poo straight off of the assembly line to your door.

The glue thing was true of one of the old models of phone but hasn't been true in years. The only way it'll fade is if the user gets used to it.

You sure about that? http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPad+Mini+Retina+Display+Teardown/19374 In this teardown staredown, the Mini blinks first: after offering up the usual gluey resistance, it succumbs and releases its front panel. The ridiculous amount of glue holding iPads together is no longer any surprise—but that doesn't make it okay. Glue inhibits repair, and that is bad.

I haven't had to repair a phone or tablet in the last 10 years, and I am extremely clumsy, throw stuff around, and use every device without a case (other than a smart cover on the iPad). Even my first gen iPad which I picked up at launch, and recently traded in, was still in near perfect condition after years of throwing it around and hastily cramming it into a full bag at airports.

It should only take ~15-20 minutes.

Sorry I didn't do the comparison yet. I may not. Casewise, it's practically the same thickness. Make no mistake, a folio like this adds appreciable weight. However it's still lighter than the other iPad versions due to it being built that way...

Anyone here gone from a retina iPad 3/4 to the retina mini? I have a 1st gen iPad I was going to trade into target for the $200 min (are they still even doing that?) and put the credit toward either a mini retina or an air. I'm mostly interested in reading comics and wondering if the smaller screen size but same res makes any difference. Personally I think I just like the larger form factor but wanted to get some thoughts. VV It's a first gen iPad. SnatchRabbit fucked around with this message at 18:11 on Nov 15, 2013 |

That being said, since you have such a recent iPad, you'd be making over $200 on a trade-in wherever you go, so long as it isn't damaged.

Personally I think I just like the larger form factor but wanted to get some thoughts. I went from iPad 4 to the mini, I don't read comics but I have a number of magazine subscriptions. All the magazines I have look great - even business journals, which can have dense text with charts/graphs/etc. are still fine to read in portrait mode. I imagine comics would be ok. Obviously it'd be much easier on a big iPad but the portability difference is very noticeable. If weight and size are not major concerns I'd say go with the Air.

If you need a bigger screen, get a bigger screen.

I went from an iPad 3 to a retina Mini and I'm actually considering trading it in for an Air. The Mini is great for games, but I've noticed some eye strain when I read web pages, probably because text is sharper but smaller on the retina screen. It's especially noticeable if I read an article in Safari and then look up at the TV -- my eyes will feel dry and vision will be slightly blurry for a few seconds. I was hoping I'd just get used to it, but my eyes haven't adjusted yet unfortunately.

Those of you with Target's $200 gift card from the trade-in, they now have some models of the mini retina in stock online. Keep in mind using both the trade-in card and a regular credit card on their website is impossible so you need to use the trade-in card to buy a regular gift card, then use that gift card and a credit card to buy the iPad.

I use the mercury browser on my original mini - it lets me increase the font size of webpages without having to manually resize constantly. Give it a shot, I had the same problem.

I'm a guy so I don't really have a way to stash my Air, and I have yet to feel encumbered by carrying it. If I'm going to class, I generally have a bag anyway for my books so if you're a student that issue is gone. If you work in an office or something, it should fit in your briefcase without issue and if you don't use one walking from the car to your desk shouldn't be any sort of trial. It's also still small enough that my girlfriend can slip it in her purse along with her kindle fire if I need her to. The thing weighs a pound, it's not like 2 inches on the screen turns it into this huge device that you can't transport, it's actually pretty easy, and I doubt the 7 inch version would fit in most peoples pocket anyway. Will having it be 2 inches smaller make it that much easier to carry? Only you can answer that, but as a comic book reader, I say get the big one, enjoy the large dynamic art, and don't really worry about portability. It's one pound.

The Mini is probably best suited to people who have to travel a lot - trust me, a full-sized iPad can be a little clumsy to pull out when you're on a plane, and even when it isn't it's nice to have the space in your carry-on back. It's also better if you're planning to use your Mini as a map or a camera.

Movies and magazines and books on the slightly larger screen are really nice. I should be getting an Air this weekend, so my only issue (weight) will be resolved.

I checked the OP, but it is a bit light on iPad Air accessory suggestions. I want something lightweight and fairly unobtrusive. I've read the Apple Smart Covers are not great, but is that sperging? Also, are there any recommendations on a specific brand of plastic for the screen/back? Thanks!

The old 4 fold iPad case was quite good. Fit better and was a case I would keep on. I have Smart Cover with my air and I take it off now when I use my iPad. That may not be too helpful but it works well for me at home and on the train.
