The movie's probably not going to just be non-stop uncensored loving for hours, and the trailer has my interest up, but given the hype and the film title, along with Von Trier's reputation, it's going to be hard to see this in public without a great deal of embarassment. I mean, I'm a grown-rear end man but I'd feel kind of awkward buying a ticket for this, provided it were even shown anywhere near where I live (in the middle of the rural bible belt). I'll probably just wait and brown bag it from Amazon when it comes out on video.

Von Trier is such an interesting director and I usually get something worthwhile out of his films even if I didn't exactly enjoy myself, but I... I don't know if I can do this one. LVT is one of the few big directors I trust with sex in cinema, but I just don't think I can personally sit through 4.5 hours of it. Antichrist was about my maximum limit for sex scenes (and clitoris mutilation scenes). I'm torn because I want LVT to be successful so he keeps making interesting movies but I don't myself really want to watch this one. I'll wait for the CineD discussion of it and see if it sounds more appealing after hearing y'all spar about it for a bit.

If you want a movie that appeals to all people go watch identity thief or the avengers. It doesn't seem like you're totally saying this, but it's not a good defense of LVT's work to go "well, if you don't like it, maybe you can go see those mainstream baby movies " The reason I'm not a big fan of his movies isn't because he's too **challenging**, it's because I find his filmmaking approach off-putting. Just because certain people don't like his style doesn't mean they're looking for something with mass-market appeal. (And, anyway, I reject the idea that something with mass appeal can't also be great art, but that's another conversation entirely.) This isn't limited to LVT- I fully recognize that Chuck Palahniuk is a really talented writer, for instance, but I still can't stand what books of his I've read. Doesn't mean I read Nicholas Sparks books instead.

I only picked the mainstream baby movies to point out we can all get a chuckle at watching something simple but we all cant enjoy something in the LVT style or the takashi miike style or the Gasper Noe style or any other directors that have their "stamp" on the art. I wasn't trying to say "hey, I'm a elite film snob because I understand this film maker" more that the more the art moves away from the norm the greater chance for people who have been exposed to a lot of art can enjoy it. Art like many things happens in layers and we all grow bored as we begin to explore a topic. We are lucky to have an artform such as this to keep us interested. cliffs: everything isn't for everyone. It would be a boring world if it was.

Yeah, no worries- I didn't think you were trying to be elitist or anything but I feel like that gets brought out a lot when people criticize Von Trier. Anyways, more on-topic, I honestly wish I was more excited for this movie because the cast is downright fantastic. Well, maybe not Shia, who I'm suspicious is just doing this to prove how super edgy he is. Maybe he'll surprise everyone though.

Yeah the cast is really impressive. If you take a movie like short bus (has non-simulated sex) and look at the cast its really a bunch of nobodies. For lars to put this together with a cast of arguably top talent says a lot about people's willingness to work with him. Although I am assuming the sex is either simulated or doubles will be brought in for any penetration shots.

I'm looking forward to watching Nymphomaniac, I think it'll be a good watch. I really enjoyed Melancholia and a few of his other movies so just have to see. They need a young Sigourney Weaver in this movie.

Great trailer. Lars is kind of hit or miss for me. Dogville really stuck with me but The Idiots was all kinds of terrible. This one looks fantastic though. It will be terribly awkward to watch, but worth it I imagine.

I just watched Antichrist. Good grief, that's a lot to digest. During the uh, gore heavy parts I was having to remind myself to breathe like the futile exercises Dafoe was giving to Gainsbourg early on in the film. Really looking forward to this film, and I think I'll wait a few days before tackling Melancholia.

I really like Lars Von Trier -- even his provocateur antics -- but I just can't get excited about Nymph()maniac, least of all because the parentheses in the title are absolutely meaningless. But the trailer is all over the map, and this just feels like a narcissistic "you've seen me but HAVE YOU SEEN ME NAKED?" vanity project from most of the actors involved. Yeah, you can simulate your O-face for a poster, but can you really find the truth in the material? The trailer is all over the map, the snippets of dialogue sound trite. I don't know, man. I just don't know.
