Goats will be tested in a couple weeks, I give them a 50:50 shot of actually being knocked up. I've seen several of them acting like they were in heat lately. Electra even gave up and let Heath go to town yesterday but I never saw him actually finish. Tomorrow when I have an extra set of hands out I'm going to be shaving down his sensitive bits and making sure nothing is going on that is preventing him from ejaculating normally. Sometimes bucks have what's called a "persistent frenulum" and need a goaty circumcision to let everything work properly. Fun times! The sheep are looking round but that's probably just wool since they're only 2 months in. Once I shear them in March you'll be able to see who is knocked up much easier. The fetus grows the most in the last month and thats when you get a lot of udder tissue growth too so it become more obvious. BigDave posted:Alright new pictures!!!! My critters will strip any small tree down, including the bark. Pine trees aren't their favorites and they don't get them regularly but they like a little something green in the middle of the winter as a treat. Fun goat story, I trimmed hooves for someone with some big handsome super stinky boer bucks and the peesmell permeated my jacket so when I went to feed my ladygoats they were all over me. They were climbing me and sniffing me and flirting. It was ridiculous. Sorry my stinky pee clothes are more sexy than you, Heath!

Chido posted:then the goats and sheep would because like the actors in any given Axe commercial Ew, I'd rather have goat piss than Axe. Spent a long time starting at Heath's crotch today. I shaved it down and didn't see any urine scald or sores or signs of urinary stones that might be causing dick problems. Then my mom and I took turns holding Dido (you could feel the hate radiating off of her) and trying to spot a penis as Heath humped away at her. Neither of us saw any signs of a boner, even when he was hunched over like they do when they get random erections. So we're calling the vet out to take a professional look at his dick and do blood draws to test everyone for CAE on Wednesday. I'm not bothering with pregnancy tests at this point. Current plan is to take care of Heath's boner issues or castrate him and get a new buck and breed 4 does in April for September kids and then 4 in November for April 2015 kids. When I do shearing the first week of April I should be able to see if any were actually knocked up and can change up my breeding roster from there. I was planning on buying a nice AAGBA or color carrying white buck this year anyway, I just have to find one that fits my needs.

He is such an adorable goon! Yeah, he's sweet and adorable and has lovely fleece so he would be castrated and stick around to keep a new buck company if it comes to that. I'm happy to keep back wethers that pull their weight and aren't aggressive towards me or the other animals. The creatures seem to know exactly how to grab the pine branches in a way that doesn't poke them. Some don't like the strong pine taste but some don't care at all or even like it. You can tell who the ones who like it are because their faces are all covered in pine sap. All the trees make my barn smell great too!

The verdict is that Heath's penis is totally normal. The vet said we could take him to OSU for a breeding soundness exam using the frighteningly named "electro-ejaculator" if we wanted to test things further but he might just need some more time to grow up. I'll probably just give him more time and see what happens when I try again in the spring. Oh goats.

AcetylCoA! posted:Made the mistake of googling electro-ejaculator. Yes, there are sickos who use them on people. Not necessarily "sickos" - electrical stimulation of the prostate can help men who have suffered severe neurological damage. Some studies have shown that inducing an orgasm through the prostate can reduce tremors, some types of seizures, and pain. Plus, paralyzed men often experience problems because their reproductive equipment isn't functioning on its own and can develop granulomas and other side effects of not clearing the tubes often enough. Never has that emoticon been more appropriate, I think.

My vet only has the bull sized electro-ejaculator tips and that's a bit much for a little buckling. To examine Heath's penis I had to park him on his butt in my lap and the vet had to probe around for like 15 minutes until he could get it out and hold on to it so he couldn't suck it back in. We all had a good laugh about how it was the most action Heath has had in his life.

"Piggyback Rides", as I call that game to the little kids who visit, is a wildly popular game among lambs and goat kids. Gotta do all that practicing for the real world. Come to think of it Heath never really was into it, he preferred sparring and headbutt games. Ginger was and still is nuts for a good surprise piggyback ride. So when looking for a second buck I had a lot of requirements and wasn't looking very hard but it looks like I may have a good lead. There's a lady only an hour away selling two adult bucks, a nearly 2 year old and a nearly 3 year old, who are out of commercial white lines but are recessive red and sired by a solid copper buck. I really wanted more of the heavy fleece you get from the white goats in my lines but I didn't want to lose color so I think whichever I choose is going to work perfectly. I'm going to go visit and pick one next week. This is the younger buck, Rex. And the older one, Quigley. Hopefully the visit goes well and I can get transport figured out and Heath can have a real goat buddy finally.

Hooray, goat buddies! Also I just realised my last post could have been misinterpreted. I meant I like it when lambs jump around the place. Not the other thing although it was still pretty funny.

I received the results of the CAE testing and sure enough Iphy came back positive. I knew it was a possibility but it's still a little sad. Luckily she's an angora, not a dairy goat, because she can keep on producing her lovely fleece and paying her way on the farm even though she is positive for the virus. Right now Iph doesn't have any symptoms (her weird head tilt she does sometimes might be evidence of some neuro involvement as a kid but it doesn't hurt her) and lateral transmission is very rare with proper management. As long as she's not in milk and I make sure she goes last with any procedure that could transmit blood she shouldn't give it to my other goats who all came back negative. If she is pregnant currently I'll have to monitor her to be there at the birth, make sure she does it in a separate area where no other animals will come in contact with the fluids and take the kid right away to bottle feed so it doesn't get the virus. She'll have to stay separate until her milk dries up but then she can live out the rest of her days with the other goats and will never be bred again. If she starts showing symptoms such as arthritis and knobby knees or pneumonia that just won't go away she'll be euthanized but many goats live long healthy lives even being CAE positive and I hope she's one of them.

Yeah, the milk we bought for her came from a local dairy herd that tested negative at the time. This year the owner switched to a different lab and a few of the dairy goats came back positive. She ended up having to sell her entire dairy flock, mostly for meat. She feels absolutely terrible about the whole situation and I think probably is more upset about Iph than we are. If she kids this year I'll be stealing them before she notices they're there if at all possible. I'm ok with her having it but I don't want it to spread or produce new goats with it. They'll be raised on pasturized milk and colostrum and can hang out with Iph once she's not in milk anymore.
