at least it's not as bad as before, at least for gox

you used to be able to put up orders for whatever amount and when your order got called up it would then deduct whatever $/:butt: from your account up to the total amount you have (including none) and then cancel the rest

there used to be huge gently caress you walls that may or may not be funded, now at least from what i understand it'll actually check your balances and freeze your bid's counterpart value until it's accepted or cancelled

i don't have an account on gox (or any other butt platform for that matter) but if they properly cargo culted there should be a stop loss call option that basically allows you to play price chicken, where if i put my thing at n i can ask the platform to cancel my bid if it gets to n+/-1

of course, even though this should execute server side, gox lag is a cruel mistress and i'm sure many a sperg have been overrun this way, but it gives the impression of market depth

i wouldn't be especially surprised if gox itself put it's own money (or fake money altogether) up like this

fake e: after effort postin' i checked the walls and the one at 500 just went from 9.8k to 5.4k in a single go

e2: and it's now down to 1054 like 40 seconds after, not sure why the first drop didn't trace but that might be bitcoinity's fault

The best thing is whatever Gox does will hurt Bitcoin.

If they close up shop, and fail to give proper funds to the Bitcoiners, they're a huge hit to the idea of unregulated exchanges.

If they start working again and let customers take out Bitcoin, the arbitrage will be huge and drag the other exchanges down to Gox's price.

I don't understand who's keeping this price up. All exhanges are toppling one by one as they're hit by digital bank runs, this is a huge blow to the faith in bitcoin and the underlying technology. This could be the end, what is the limit of our patience to access our funds? What do normal people think when they see this? They'd be crazy to get involved. Maybe we are all crazy.

[–]tinyshots [score hidden] 2 minutes ago
I don't see any exchanges toppling. I see a pause while some noise gets sorted out.

I think Bitcoin attracts a different sort of speculator than your standard investment.

0%. I'll take out loans, work street corners, and max out credit cards if it goes to $1.

"There is actually one good thing for us about economic slumps. During them, IT departments and software users in general feel pressure to cut costs. That makes low-cost and free software more attractive. Over the next few months you can expect to see a lot of submarine Linux deployments suddenly surfacing as managers realize that they'll look *good* on their quarterlies if they cut their licensing and service costs, and as the techies working for them get that message and fess up to how many NT boxes they've been replacing by stealth."

Why it's annoying to get paid in bitcoin (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 9 minutes ago by dont-give-me-gold

I thought it'd be cool to get paid in bitcoin for my full-time job. It was at first, whenever I needed cash I'd sell what I need on localbitcoins.com and cover my expenses like paying off my credit card. Everything could be done online which was awesome!

Then my bank CIBC flagged me, froze my account, gave me a talk about how bitcoin is used for money laundering and drugs and that I can't take cash deposits from across the country on my personal account. If I were to do that again my account would be closed and from now on my account was being watched carefully. I started using my TD account and now the same thing has happened. Frozen account, talk to manager in branch...

BIG News: Micro-Transactions are now accepted at NaughtyAmerica.com with Bitcoin! $2 for 2 days! (self.Bitcoin)
submitted 8 hours ago* by CalvinHouse

Want to make sure everyone knows this. This is a a BIG deal as this is where Bitcoin can really shine. NaughtyAmerica.com is one of the most popular porn sites in the world, and they are now accepting Micro-Transactions $2 for 2 days
Unfortunately, it didn't work correctly. Here is what happened:
They don't have something configured correctly. My Bitcoin transaction went through, but my login never activated and I never got a confirmation email.
I called support and naturally the woman was confused on tech support. She at one point asked if I could give her 'the number for Bitcoin' so she could try to figure it out. I briefly explained in a nice way how that's not possible, so she escalated this to her higher ups.
Long story short, I'm sure they'll get this working at some point. These are the early, early, stages and it's exciting to see micro transactions happening in the porn world

[–]dexX7 9 points 4 hours ago
Very good thing, but Bitcoin payments are still 50 % more expensive: $2.00 (BTC) for 2 days vs. $1.95 for 3 days; $29.95 (BTC) for 30 days vs. $24.95 for 30 days.. :S

I still can't get over how bitcoiners without fail convert back to USD when comparing costs instead of their worldchanging cryptobutts

Class Action Lawsuit in the future? (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 11 minutes ago by BringOnDaLawyers

It seems like the Bitcoin Foundation is making decisions which impact the entire community. Recently they actively choose to deny that the malleability bug was a danger to anyone except MtGox. It was obvious later that this statement was not true.

There was probably an internal email exchange among developers and members which determined what they would tell the public about the problem. I have a difficult time believing they were not aware at that point that this would impact the entire community.

So I think to myself, how long before we see a class action lawsuit against the Bitcoin Foundation for knowingly misleading the community. When the wheels start turning, I'll be on that bus. I love America.
