the value halving over the last few weeks must be doing something lovely to the 'profitability' of mining too. let's hope they hit another difficulty jump while the price keeps dropping too.

I really think we need to appreciate the flavor of a slow crash. Flash crashes are something bitcoin's community is used to, and are easy to rationalize due to repetition of the same excuses, i.e. "too many idiots panicked, thanks for the cheap coins," or "some whale cashed out and now bitcoins are more evenly distributed." Slow crashes show that Bitcoin is trending down over time, and makes them realize that something might actually be wrong. Also note that Andreas M. Antonopoulous loves to cite flash crashes on the NYSE from high frequency trading as proof that Bitcoins are better somehow.
