2007 french documentary "Suck my geek!" featuring Mark Karpeles (self.Bitcoin)

Current posts are mostly speculations about (Mt)Gox and Mark Karpeles. Here is something else for a change, a documentary featuring Mark Karpeles himself. Not terribly interesting, but non speculative...
Feel free to provide a better translation if you believe it is inaccurate. My notes are [ enclosed ].
Excerpt 1
MK: "In the real life, if I want to talk to someone in the subway, I'm nothing more than an anonymous person, while if I go on the net, I'm MagicalTux"
don't worry mark, you are no longer an anonymous person, now people will want to talk to you and I'm not sure being MagicalTux will help
Excerpt 2
To contextualize, discussion is about interpersonal skills shortcomings:
MK: "For me it was a bit different, since I was rejecting others. In the beginning, I vaguely tried to discuss with others, When I was in 6th grade [age 11] I was talking about quantum physics, and I didn't find a lot of people to talk about it. It was a bit complicated."
you don't reject Mark, he rejects you...
Excerpt 3
MK: "Me for example, I have lots of girlfriends, but they are in jpeg, png or even in avi"
(switch to someone else)
MK: "Or in CD"
Excerpt 4
MK: "What is special with my mom is that, as of today, she is on the internet, she plays games, she create game servers, she has rather geeky activities. Originally, it was her who let me start to program 3 years ago [or at 3, I can't tell]. I cannot imagine a life without computers, currently it is not possible. In the morning, I have to check my emails, check that my servers are ok, chat with a few people before heading to job. Then of course, my job is working with computers, so I'm on a computer during the whole day, then in the evening same thing, I code, I verify stuff, I watch anime to rest".
MK opens computer case and jokes:
"We have been together for the last 3-4 years. [unintelligible]"
MK plays with his gyroscope toy.
MK: "I spent some time completely disconnected from the [real] world. I had created my company which was a way to earn money, working for other companies that I didn't knew over the internet."
More gyroscope porn: "It slipping a bit out of my hand".
MK: "It even happened to me to spend a few days in a row in front of the computer, without moving, only eating stuff that was at arm's length. I spent maybe 5-6 months without going outside.
Even more gyroscope:
MK: "There of course, it moves in every direction. And if we look at the display, my score is 11284. There it is. We spend our time behind a keyboard, which is not very physical, this provide some strength in the arm for when you have a computer to carry and not be taken by surprise."
Game.
MK: "All the people I know, I first met them on the internet. We chat, occasionally we meet, it's a bit like if we were living 2 lives at the same time."
Excerpt 5
MK: "[unintelligible] it was the first time I went out to have a drink after work. It was a nice experience, but..."
(quick switch to 2 other guys)
MK: "Today, society provide means for someone to live without ever leaving his house"

The single class leaked so far is backend wallet manipulation code. It isn't the trading engine, or the bits that have the txid repeat vulnerability, or the hot/cold wallet transfer stuff.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT A LAGRANGE POINT IS?
When banks made terrible decisions like Mark did they got bailout bonus checks -- I'm betting not giving bonuses works out better (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 3 hours ago by bruce_fenton

The argument of bailout bonus supporters was that the executives at these banks should be rewarded for bad decisions.

One firm had bonuses of over $9 billion and single executives at banks which should have gone under were awarded over $100 million.

There will be no such bailout for Gox and certainly no such bonus for Mark.

Citizens who had nothing to do with Gox will not be forced to pay for its mistakes.

The company will not be propped up and protected by government.

In a decentralized Bitcoin economy a failure like this....painful and hard as it is for those directly affected as it may be....is isolated and contained.

I'm betting this method will work out better in the long run.

[–]Poop_is_Food 3 points 2 hours ago

Please show me where anyone made that argument ever

[–]bruce_fenton[S] -1 points 1 hour ago

Seriously? Everyone who supported the bailouts...that's exactly what the bailouts did. They can couch it in some other excuse of "too big to fail" and far fetched theories of it being needed to "save the economy" but the reality is that this is exactly what the bailouts did... They took money from citizens and gave it to bankers as a reward for failed decisions.

[–]Poop_is_Food 3 points 1 hour ago

I will patiently await your citation.

[–]bruce_fenton[S] -1 points 1 hour ago

Citation? Every. Single. Person. Who. Supported the bailouts.

Are you just a Reddit troll or are are you actually honestly unaware that there was a thing called the TARP bailout in which $700 billion was given to failed bankers?

[–]Poop_is_Food 4 points 1 hour ago

I want a citation of someone saying something to the effect of "executives at these banks should be rewarded for bad decisions."

mostly incompetent developers implementing a controversial (but only partially bad) set of design decisions

other databases in similar categories are pretty neat, but mongo is sort of the inexplicably famous pretty bad one, and for the most part they are all dubious choices for applications having stricter integrity requirements

few days ago I sent a letter to human resources letting them know that I am quitting my job. it took me few months to decide and I have to admit that I had to test my faith in heroin because of the price dropping and all the negative noise going around, but I did it anyways.

I still have to wait few months before leaving, my contract have a 3 months leaving window but I somehow managed to decrease it to 2 months, the interesting part is that I work for a world wide company (Goodyear) I work as an IT Operations engineer and when I sent them the letter they called me for hearings, of course they had to know about why I am leaving and if there is anything bothering me or if I am not happy with my job and the conditions, and of course I was answering every question with no, which made them even more curious, I told the women that I am moving forward with my life and I want to work with heroin and help building the infrastructure and community around it, she asked me if it was because of material purpose, and I said it was yes it is also a reason why I decided to leave, then she said may I ask you how much you were offered at heroin ? hahahaha

after having a laugh I explained the whole thing, spent 1 hour and a half at that meeting and guess what we've got new heroiner.

I didn't decide what I will do with my heroin career yet, but I am sure that I will figure that out as soon as I get free and have some time, I am not afraid because heroin is still young and there is allot of opportunities out there to be discovered and so many businesses to be built.

PM me and if you want a prove of my story, I will send you an e-mail from my Jobs e-mail (Goodyear)

[–]mmitech 3 points 57 minutes ago*

you think so, but I don't, Steve jobs had Apple invented in a garage, how dump was that ?

Edit: also I made sure that I am materially independent for some time, and if things doesn't work as I planned, finding an IT job is not that hard today. but be assured that it will work out just fine for me

still rather support the conspiracy theory that gox lost enough coin to malleability that it was obvious that they were hosed, and the lack of means to control bitcoin, and the general ineptness of gox, meant all employees basically faced the situation "we are hosed and will be blamed for losing peoples money no matter what, but we still have millions of dollars that i could steal without anyone actually having a chance of knowing..."

Pretty sure there's a play fort at Mt. Gox made from brand new Herman Miller Aeron chairs. They're an agile tech startup with the revolutionary idea their employees should be happy and have Nerf gun fights.

They reconciled their accounts by going in the Aeron chair fort and imagining what the numbers on the spreadsheets should have been.
