I'm from NZ but I'm using one for my travels. I just transfer funds from my normal account over - takes 1 day. 3 free ATM withdrawals a month. They do take a small cut for conversions though. I'd still recommend using a travel card - it's really drat convenient.

Research your options and go with the best.

I still don't understand why these are better than a normal ATM card. Is it just trying to prevent you getting your card cloned or whatever?

Oh hey a handful of actually really important Lao governmental officials died in a plane crash:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/05/18/world/asia/crash-in-laos-kills-top-government-officials.html

NY Times posted:

Killed in the crash were two top figures in the security apparatus of the authoritarian Lao government: the deputy prime minister, Douangchay Phichit, and Thongbane Sengaphone, the minister of public security, according to two Lao diplomats.

For a Communist party that relies on force and intimidation to stay in power, the loss of what were arguably the two most powerful people in the security apparatus was a significant blow.

The governor of Vientiane province was also killed in the crash.

In addition to his post as deputy prime minister Mr. Douangchay was defense minister and a member of the Politburo, the highest decision-making body of the Communist party. Mr. Thongbane, the public security head, was feared in the country and was said to be one of the officials leading a crackdown against dissent over the past year and half.

That crackdown included the disappearance of the most prominent civic leader in the country, Sombath Somphone, a United States-trained agriculture specialist who led efforts to liberalize the hermetic communist leadership.

NY Times doesn't like those guys. There were about 20 people on board the airplane, many of whom were officials on their way to a military ceremony. Lao news seems to be saying that there were some survivors, for what that's worth.

E: The NYT also had this line in the article but they removed it: "The minister of public security — one of the country’s most feared and powerful officials in the authoritarian Communist government — was onboard and confirmed dead."

I actually have clients who use them and I can see the value. I'm typically pretty leery of cash card stuff, but in this case, yeah, you can load one up and wall it off from other accounts for security reasons, but you can also control the currency the card converts in (so you don't need to accept on the spot conversion rates) and you can control limits in case you need to spend a lot or want to make them really small for security reasons. They're great for tourists who might need to spend a big chunk on something, somewhere or just as a backup source of income.

Also, on the plane story, I caught that from a friend in VTE today. In a shocking development, it was not Lao Central that crashed.

On that note, I'm reporting back on the Pizza Hut X-Men pizza, which I ordered last weekend. As predicted the toppings were semi decent but the cheese was some nasty poo poo. Easy Cheeze and mayo probably isn't too far from the mark.

Apologies it took so long to post this, but I was laid up for the better part of this week with food poisoning. I can't say for sure that this pizza was to blame but I have my suspicions.

Update on my plan to get an ATM travel card thingy: left my actual bank card in Burma and am now in Bangkok. Have $6. Don't know when I'll get it back.

Luckily I'm a cleverclogs smartypants and know my card number off by hand, so I suppose all I can do now is book myself into a 4 star hotel, order poo poo loads of food and drink the bar dry. And charge to my room, of course.

Oh woe is me.

In 5th grade we had sex ed and the there was a box up front for questions you were too shy to ask. The guy that sat next to me spent all day trying to think up questions he could put in the box that were as funny as possible but that still might get read by the teacher. The best one he came up with IMHO was "How big does the butthole get?" which, thankfully, the internet came along to answer in fairly short order, because the teacher skipped it over.

Last full day in Bangkok. I'm catching up with a bunch of Koh Tao reprobates who have been attending the Thailand Diving Expo over the past few days. Plans so far involve seeing the new Godzilla movie in Imax then getting drunk and going bowling. What could possibly go wrong? Have alrady requested a late check out from my hotel...

It's unusual for an old white dude in Thailand to let another topic get in the way of randomly inserting SO THE GIRLS into the discussion!

IMMIGRATION NEWS NOW:

http://www.phuketgazette.net/phuket-news/Tourist-visa-runs-not-dead-Immigration-boss/29460#ad-image-0

Some random official in Phuket is hardly definitive, but it's indicative of the usual Thai Immigration process:

1) Roll out sweeping immigration reform in confusing press release with no context explaining how it will apply and featuring menacing overtones.
2) Watch as the world, even outside of the nearest pub, begins to descend into a tizzy over whether it will affect them. Cue threats from sex pensioners about leaving as this is the last straw.
3) Realize the negative effects of your horrible PR rollout and let tourist havens like Phuket begin backtracking on threats.
4) Go quiet and abandon changes after 3-6 months.

It's like every. loving. time.

No, that's about what I got from it. "We're going to get really strict on this you guys. No, it won't affect anyone who is really a tourist and can prove it... or uses a visa service that lines our pockets."

Yup, that's what we heard as well. The immigration chief was oddly riled up about the South Koreans, though. Kind of strangely particular, but maybe partly a face-saving thing given how many Thais are deported from South Korea annually coupled with the fact South Koreans get 90 days at land crossings.

Speaking of news-y stuff, I'm doing a story on Airbnb in Bangkok (I know, I know) and, from what I recall in this thread, it seems to be the consensus that it's not a super competitive option for travelers given the numerous budget options in Bangkok, no? That seems to be the impression I've gotten from talking to people. Anyone have different experiences they'd care to share?

ReindeerF

Well the original rollout just talked about them marking in your passport and counting times. It didn't give obvious things like "if you wait 7 days to re-enter" or the like, so you've got this world of people who are backpacking or who are like offshore workers and the like who transit Thailand multiple times and have no idea if there's some limit to the number of entries or if it's just governed by days between entries or what.

They've slowly released more info to clarify it, but it's still a bit sketchy as to what the exact criteria are and what it'll be enforced like.

Which, of course, is par for the course here.

I've got a friend who is married into a family that had a shitload of empty condo rooms sitting around (i.e. seemingly every Thai-Chinese family). He jazzed them up and they arranged for maids when needed and they've been pulling in a decent income renting the rooms on airbnb. Shoot me a message on LINE and I'll send you his details if you want.

I got asked at passport control the other day "how long I was staying in Thailand" and said "3 days". Weirdly they gave me 28 days on my passport whereas they usually give 31 so I've only got a 25 day leeway on that 3 day stay. That'll show me I suppose.

Also on the note of the visa changes, don't worry about it. I also saw a sign at immigration which said "OVERSTAYING FINE HERE" so apparently it's all ok now!

This move is a real surprise to me. When stuff like this happens it usually means something was going on behind the scenes that the general public wasn't aware of. Is everybody well in Hua Hin?

It may just be counter posturing but it's a little extreme. Yingluck was put in place almost as a gently caress you from Thaksin to the powers that removed him and I thought it was fairly clever of them to remove her for another Thaksin puppet. I'm not sure why it was threatening enough or bold enough to summon up the army on its own.

It seems like something they'd want everyone to be reminded of, but when "too long" is a short time after a major titular shift in power with no major underlying change in popular action I doubt the protests had much to do with it.
