There exists in Thailand a girl named Turd. Some of you will recognize that this is an unusual nickname. That is because it's a shortened version of her surname (the source of most of the unusual names you hear). Her surname is Turdsak.

I just used a Charles Schwab check card and got the 30 dollars or so of fees (5 usd per withdrawal) refunded at the end of the month.

You can get tall bottles of Red Horse in Bangkok for like 42-43 Baht I think, though I spotted them in the beer aisle at Big C the other day for 50 Baht and I was like

It's a premium beer!

It's better and a bit cheaper than Taiwan beer so I have no complaints. I do miss 2.5 renminbi yanjing/tsingdao bottles in China though. At least I'm not in Malaysia/Singapore/Indonesia.

No. Taiwan beer rules. Give me a can of classic and a shot of 金門高粱 and I'm a happy camper.

I love Singabore Lite for a break from the chaos of Bangkok for sure, BUT SERIOUSLY? I guess coming from Manila it probably has the same effect, though. A nice break from insanity. Power lines and streets make sense, things appear orderly on the surface (note: do not scratch the surface) and so on.

So I just had 2 weeks in Northern Vietnam and loved it, have now been in Siem Reap for a couple of days. It's fun but I'm a bit templed out and want something different, so have booked a spur of the moment sleeper bus leaving in about 4 hours to go to Kampot (because they have rock climbing there).

I will prob stay a few days, then thinking of going to Koh Kong because it sounds cool (jungles and trekking and the like). Is Koh Kong good? Anything else recommended to see in that vague area? I like nature and outdoors stuff mostly :)

I only have about 9 days before I have to leave unfortunately (cross overland into Thailand and flying out from Bangkok on the 18th). Thanks!

If you're into serious nature and outdoors (i.e. activities) it's mostly on the Thai side. Or up closer to Ratanakiri (Northeast). Eastern Thailand has some really beautiful national parks and natural areas, though I also find Pailin and the area around Battambang pretty. What little I saw of Koh Kong was pretty, but not highly memorable. The border transit there is pretty annoying.

I'm on THAI Smile's inaugural flight (1228) from HKT into DMK in about an hour. In monsoon season - only sprinkling a bit here in Phuket, though. Took them like 15 minutes to find the flight number since it's never existed. Keep an eye on the news, I might be posthumously famous shortly! Heh.

EDIT: On that note, I booked this flight two days ahead on a major long holiday weekend and it cost 1,090 Baht. Make sure to search TG's site and sort by arrival/departure at DMK if you're traveling domestically. THAI Smile is out of DMK now and has some insane fares. Next best fare was TG into BKK at 2,050 and DD into DMK at like 2,300.

Take the Bokor mountain tour from Kampot. Also rent a bicycle in Kampot and ride up the road on the other side of the river until you get to the dam. Get off the main road and check out the neighborhoods and river along the way.

Then go to Kep and eat crap noodles. Kep also has a nice hiking trail up the hill that's maintained by a French guy that runs a guesthouse on it. There are nice views of the coast and surrounding areas.

There's also an extremely long wooden dock where you can hang out and eat banh mis on.

Are you in/out of Trang? Last time I did that trip in monsoon season afternoon we about bounced off the runway. I said, "never fly me into a tiny airport during rainy season afternoon." Whole family was laughing at me.

A week later a DD flight slid off the runway during landing in heavy rain and they had to bring in a crane from Bangkok our Hat Yai to get it out.

I'll be the guy drinking Leo for 37 his straight if we still have hours.

I googled to see what they're saying:

http://www.tictuktourskampot.com/kampot-kep-tours/bokor-mountain-tour/

Come on! Heh. They totally gloss over the colossal white elephant project that's shat all over the hill casino in the last five years. I'll never forgive myself for not going to see that before Sokha hosed up and developed the hilltop area into that big casino and tourism destination (that's failing miserably).

I have a potentially unanswerable question. I'm planning on spending a few weeks in Northern Vietnam starting mid-October. I was initially thinking of heading over to Laos, checking out a few areas, and then making my way towards Chiang Rai via boat or bus from Luang Prabang. However, I've long been curious about the Yi Peng festival in Chiang Mai and have been reading up on the Loi Krathang festival as well. I would most likely have to bump Laos and fly directly from Hanoi to Chiang Mai in order to fit this in. Any thoughts on choosing one or the other? Either way, I'll be hitting up Chiang Mai at some point on the trip. Also, I haven't been to either country and I'm not sure if I'll have the chance again to be in SE Asia in November. Thanks.

Hello thread! I'll be arriving at BKK at the end of this month to take up a job as an English teacher.

1) When I get there, I would happily buy a couple beers for somebody who can give me the 'welcome to Bangkok' spiel. I don't know exactly where in the city I'll be living yet.

2) I'm flying Singapore Air so I have a layover at SIN. Any recommendations on killing those six hours will be appreciated.

Yes my preference is always to commute to work, not to fun. I can handle a long commute to work where I can work in the Taxi or with a driver, but when you also have to commute for an hour+ every time you want to meet up with friends downtown, it really taxes me.

I mean dark red isn't bad per se. I like LadPrao for example because it is not shady at all. There are maybe a couple of seedy spots, cruddy little karaoke bars primarily, relative to many other areas in Bangkok. It's mostly business buildings though and of course the two major entertainment areas of Central Plaza and the area around Major a little North of it. It has a very American feel to it.

Anywhere on the sky train is better than anywhere not on it, but if you're all the way out at Lat Prao you're going to be going to see people, not the other way around. And yeah some of the areas colored red are themselves pretty nice, they're just... distant.

I was totally comfortable even in the Klong Toei slums. I don't think there are any actually shady spots in Bangkok, though I did get menaced by a pack of soi dogs in Bang Kae.

That map needs revising now that the lines have extended out to Bang Wa and Bearing. Next year the lines way the gently caress out into Nonthaburi open, which will move the window for Acceptable Living Areas even further.

On Nut is in no way cool, but it is pretty much teacher/cheap sex pensioner central, so there's a bunch of foreigner poo poo to do there. If you don't enjoy going down to the On Nut Night Market like once every month or so and watching the tragedy then I just don't want to know you.

I'll let another Bangkok goon comment on Huai Kwang/Sutthisan.

Ari is now, unfortunately, on the pink list and has rapidly become the next Thong Lo area of yuppie people eating overpriced, bad interrrr food. I know a number of new money folks moving their family compounds here over the last 3-5 years. As well, most of the foreigners here are with the UN or other high end fly-in-fly-out jobs. I hate it. Everything worth eating at closes by 20:00 and the bars are the most banal poo poo imaginable.

The new intermodal transport center is set to open at Bang Sue in the next few years, with the lines running out all over the place and the high speed rail and bus terminal and so on, so I expect Bang Sue to become the next On Nut.

For now, I'd add Udomsuk/Punnawitthi as the new On Nut, but with better food.

EDIT: Also, don't forget the Airport Rail Link and Ramkamhaeng!
