StoneOfShame posted:Totally, its an awful bill but the DUP/SF are just going to do everything they can to avoid anything that could possibly be associated with sex work except for demonise everyone because they're terrified of alienating their religious backing. McCrea is an odd one he's a bit of a poo poo but from the one conversation I've had with him I got the impression he's one to look at academic research and make an informed decision on things instead of just going along with a party, its probably his scientific background. I wouldn't be surprised if the Alliance are getting some help from the Lib Dems on this issue; after all, they are sister parties and many people in NI who hold one party membership also hold the other's. The sort of stuff I'm hearing from Alliance MLAs is incredibly similar to stuff said at the Lib Dem Conference during the sex work motion debate. The Lib Dems also have the problem of a possible Labour/Tory stitch-up if Labour are in government next year; from what I've heard, the Shadow Cabinet are really keen on introducing the Nordic Model. Incidentally, when the Nordic model was debated in the European Parliament, it passed with PES and EPP votes, with ALDE and the Greens against. Although, awkwardly for the Lib Dems, the only Lib Dem MEP to vote for it is now the only Lib Dem MEP. TinTower fucked around with this message at 22:47 on Oct 20, 2014 |

Out of curiosity, I dont know a huge amount about the major parties views on the matter, is it pretty much the case that whoever wins the next general election the Nordic Model is being introduced? Not that that will really effect what happens in Northern Ireland as they will introduce legislation and SF/DUP will block anything decent. Edit:^^ In Éirígí's defense I wouldn't necessarily class them as a dissident party rather than a revolutionary socialist republican one, they had members found with arms hut there was never anything to suggest that it was supported by the party. There has always been a link in NI between the left and violent Republicanism but they are degrees, I don't support dissident violence at all (hell my ex is a Catholic PSNI officer in Derry and was in Strand road station when the bomb went off a few years ago) but Éirígí are hardly the 32CSM and Devlin is far from the likes of Gary Donnelly. In their current form, the Tories won't do it without some form of prompting. Labour will almost certainly try to introduce it. The Greens oppose it on paper but Lucas supports it. The Lib Dems have the oldest pro-decriminalisation policy (dating back to 1994), re-affirming it in Glasgow two weeks ago. Said motion was pretty much passing interim policy on the Nordic model to make sure that Labour don't try to pull a fast one during coalition negotiations, with a more detailed and updated policy paper to be introduced in the near future; the current policy is really old; the current sex work policy is Paper 3, whereas the 2015 Lib Dem equality manifesto is Policy Paper 120. And yeah, I'm pretty sure David Ford was at Lib Dem Conference from what he's saying now.

Thanks for the info, have you got any good suggestions for really reading up on this I dont know anywhere near as much about this as I would like to at all. Ford is another decent bloke, he got me a lift from Stormont to south Belfast once as I'd cycled over to do some interviews for a paper and it had started to piss down in the meantime. He's also campaigned heavily within his church in favour of hay marriage which being a Presbyterian must have resulted in a fair bit of dislike towards from his church.

Speaking of the Greens, what do you think of Hinkley C? While I obviously wish that gov would nut up and just run its own power plants rather than jumping through hoops to get private to do it whilst still footing as much of the bill as possible, I'm happy any new nuclear is getting built at all (even if it's overpriced and planned to take way longer to build than industry average). In other news, spiders are scary.

My mate who works at National Grid is currently and not very subtly hinting on Facebook that the Didcot fire is a Really Big Deal and if you've got the time look at the public information on demand and surplus within the grid you can see how close to the brink we are. I asked about brown outs and his response was "Ed Davey has said it won't happen and he's clearly a man who knows what he's talking about." Basically, totally hosed.

Obvious thing to do will be to ration electricity to those on benefits, lest any private outdoor heated swimming pools have to be turned off overnight.

I took my laptop there when the DC jack came loose - the guy who fixed it did it for the price of the new jack and cleaned my heatsink while he was at it. An enormous cheery biker-looking fellow, he had a good laugh about the first place I took it to, where they said they'd have to strip down the motherboard and send it away for six weeks because they didn't have a soldering iron in the shop.
