Just drink your beer before it warms up, problem solved.
Also forgot to mention, some little girl walked up to me in the mall on Christmas and wished me a merry Christmas :3: I showed her pictures of snow that I had on my phone and she freaked out, it was really cute.

Archer, Chang and Sing are the last beers I'll drink in SE Asia. Because when you crack any of those open you can smell the thick offgassing of preservatives they put in them to keep them from skunking inside of a black box truck bobbling down a Thai highway. If they have Beer Lao I'll drink that. If they don't have that I'll drink Asahi. If they don't have those then Tiger I guess. No Tiger? Okay then Singa, whatever. But if I'm drinking outside in Thailand and I'm drinking those horrible yellow lagers I'll pour them over ice, it's fine.

Also when I first went to Thailand I could drink 20 beers in a good night of partying and do okay the next day. First night I drank in Thailand I had maybe four Singas and was in the bathroom and just started puking in the urinal, started feeling drunk at almost that same instant. It's like drinking in a hot tub.

I made FB friends with my favourite student from Laos, even though we're not supposed to. I sometimes make little videos on my phone, explaining stuff like what snow feels like, then upload it with a list of words I used so he can look them up in his dictionary. We're both having fun. He loves the ones about snow. First thing he wanted to know was if I eat it or not, and it occurred to me that the idea of it never crossed my mind. It's fun looking at the world through his eyes, though it feels a bit mean sometimes since he can''t afford to leave Laos. I like to think someday some rich voluntourist will give him a grant for university or something, though that level of patronage is pretty rare, it does happen.

I was on an AirAsia from Chiang Mai to Bangkok this year. There were two planes departing within about 40 minutes of each other and despite checking everyones boarding pass at least twice, usually three times, they still managed to let several people on the wrong plane. Maniacs.

Just fly Nok Air, they paint their planes like birds. Pretty sure this works like go faster stripes and makes them fly better.

Denpasar airport is the best for that, gate 10 is used by the low cost airlines to bus loads of people on different flights into and out of the same door at the same time.

I flew Nok Air from Bangkok to Phitsanulok a week ago, my plane was painted like a flamingo and they served Auntie Anne's for an in-flight snack, both pros in my book.
Also not only did I mistake Leo for Chang earlier today, I said gently caress it and tried ice in said Leo and didn't notice much of a difference so don't take my advice on SE Asian beer I guess.

So I gotta say Saigon is pretty enjoyable. Last night wife and I posted up on the sidewalk in middle of Bui Vien for several hours, I had some beers. Real people watching, reminded me of a third world Bourbon street. Feel like the city is actually not very sketchy, I have not been offered drugs or sex workers, just random food and crap I don't need.

Extremely overrated, the main course was dry chicken breast chunks in some bland sauce. Not sure what the rave reviews are from at all. Ate the biggest prawns/shrimp ever at Ben Thanh night market, they were pricey but worth it for the experience. Also the turned egg/balut. I think I am going to try and check out Rat Hue tonight, a thread recommendation.

How do you guys keep North Koreans from hacking into your bank accounts when you're using hostel wifi/ free wifi on your laptops? Do you pay for a VPN or is there some free one that won't steal all your bank account details?

What you do - if you're really worried - is you check the fraud protection on your bank account (i.e. do you only have 24 hours to make a claim etc) and check it regularly. My bank, with a basic debit card, liked to cut my card off whenever my "spending appeared irregular". Apparetenly my spending was irregular when taking $200 out of a cash machine to blow in an illegal casino in Poipet, but you'll all be glad to know I soon put that right.

Basically unless you're with a bank run by a complete load of idiots the worst thing a hacker can do is, er, log into your account. Credit cards are a different kettle of fish though.

Cuc Gach Quan was intriguing, but rejected for being way too far out of District 1. Wife thought broken rice (com tam) was way cool, to me just seemed like normal rice with whatever you put with it. Good eats in Saigon all around.

Made it to Hanoi in 1 piece on jetstar pacific. Old quarter is pretty freaking crazy. Motorbikes, narrow streets. The main lake south of old quarter is looking really pretty. Need to lock in NYE plans, I think they should involve something near lake. Had Bun Cha at the place I had found online, tiny storefront, awesome.

I love reading TripAdvisor reviews around here. "Good food, friendly staff and excellent prices. We enjoyed our food. Bit out of the way." 3 of 5 stars. That was one from last week I laughed at. The restaurant in question is like a 10 minute walk from the riverside in central Phnom Penh.

Read a good one today from a Russian for a place in Ratchaburi that I went to called Cowboy Cafe. Your typical attempt at Wild West decor with bad imitation Western food and mediocre Thai food. Entertaining in a kitschy sort of way, what with the tall ladyboy waitress running around helping you in daisy dukes and a checkered shirt. What does our Russian friend think?

If you're not there by 8 forget it, there will be no available cabs between 8 and 1 and a lot of areas you might want to go to will be unreachable due to cabjams anyway. Stay wherever you are at that time and enjoy it, unless you want to scoot somewhere on the skytrain of course. I think a friend of mine paid 600B to get from KSR to a club on Silom and that was like ten years ago and that was to a loving tuk tuk driver because none of the cabs were available -- that wouldn't have been much more than like 120B in a metered taxi, maybe 200 with really bad traffic or something. He spoke some Thai too and had been living in Bangkok for at least five years so good luck on doing better.

Any of the big name clubs will have NYE parties if that's what you want. RCA is going to be on the far end of nightclub/champagne/lines and there will be plenty of Thai people there. Khao San is a decent middle ground usually as every day is the same day on KSR basically -- there's some extra stuff in the clubs there but everything else is just up to its usual nonsense and Thais don't see any particular reason to go there over any other day. For lo-fi NYE I don't know. Go to a nightmarket or something.

You should probably state your interests if you want more specific suggestions on what to do. If you don't have interests I suggest you just hook up with some group of people at seven and then follow them around all day unless you hook up with another group in which case drop the first one and follow the other one around.

My best NYE in Thailand was actually in Kanchanaburi. The Bangkok thing gets really saturated with people going to clubs and bars and the taxi hassle &c so I got on a bus and paid like 30B to go to Kanchanaburi. Once I got there I rented a motorbike and started following Thais my age around until I found out where their bars were and went in one and immediately got adopted by a table of Thai people and they had a cool stage show that was mostly music and clothed dancing but was amazing and sexy as gently caress and I bought a bottle of JW Red and we all had a grand old time. You can do the same in Bangkok mind you, just don't swim against the current and fail to be where you want to be a little early on that day.

One of the big middle-and-upper-middle-class public Bangkokian places to go is the beer garden at Central World, where they set up just section after section of metal, branded beer tables run by the different brands and people drink in the New Year. It's as close to the Big Apple concept as Bangkok comes, with a countdown and bands and all. I've done it, it's not exactly my thing as like most Thai events it's way too packed and way too loud beyond all comprehension, but it's a real deal.

How easy is it to get medical stuff done in Thailand? I've been having some nagging headaches, sinusitis like stuff and other slightly worrying small things, but my home doctor here is not convinced I need to get an xray just in case, and it's not legally possible to just walk into the hospital and ask for something. There are some private clinics but they're very expensive. Can I just walk into some clinic in Thailand, point at my skull, pay a fee and get it done for some peace of mind?

It's weird because whenever one of my animals has a problem, I take them to the vet, they get an xray or some other treatment and it's done in a few days. I, a human, been having annoying exhausting poo poo for almost a year now and no dice.

It's very simple to get things done, though depending on what your issue is and your language skills, the specialization required can mean that you need to use specific hospitals (in the case of the latter, that's true anywhere). A basic x-ray probably wouldn't be more than the equivalent of $15 at a government hospital and $30 at a private hospital - panoramic and the like would be more. If you really want to find out what's wrong, though, you need a specialist. Not sure, but I'd guess ENT given what you're describing. If you can tolerate navigating a foreign teaching hospital with English-speaking, very bright doctors and spotty English on the nurse/staff side, the best combination of cost and care for you would probably be Chula (central Bangkok) or Siriraj (just across the ferry from the KSR area).

If you need a little more English/International care and don't mind paying double, there are plenty of mid-range international hospitals that lack the accreditations, but which still provide good care. Then, if you prefer, there are the tip-top international institutions with the newest equipment and highest-paid doctors, etc. Happy to provide references for any level. Email me at reindeerf@outlook.com - Happy New Year.

Yeah, that's kind of the thing. You don't want an x-ray, what you want is a diagnosis. We can get you an eve cheaper x-ray in a small clinic in Cambodia, no lead apron required! However, in order to figure out what's wrong you need to see the correct specialist at a decent facility (of which Thailand is tied for tops with, I believe, Japan or Korea).

Yeah I know an x-ray isn't really good for you, but at this point I'm mostly going "look, do I have a tumor or not?" and knowing that that's at least not it would take away a great deal of stress which does enough harm on its own.
