They are infinitely more irritating in real life, but I guess that's to be expected.

Huh, this show's pretty good. Not to say that I didn't expect it to be (KyoAni at its worst is still pretty good) but I was thinking it was going to be more along the lines of brass band k-on. To see that there's an actual plot is surprising, even if it's as predictable as every other anime plot. It looks nice, too.

I don't like the 3d backgrounds they use for some tracking shots as characters walk on sidewalks. It's happened like 3 times now and it's ugly and jarring considering how kyoani has spent so long slavishly perfecting their romantic and detailed backgrounds in all their other recent shows

It was bad to the point of amusing in Parasyte. It isn't at all bad here though, which I'm thankful for.

Continues to be a seriously quality show. Getting significant Shirobako vibes here, even if it's a little lighter tonally.

Also, Kumiko's crush is blatant and adorable.

A great little detail: The girl with the french horn threatens to throw her mouthpiece at the teacher if he fails them again. When they're waiting for his reply, you can see her loosening it.

They remind me of Nichijou. I bet when the director did the initial storyboards, the faces were exactly like that.

it was partially storyboarded by the Nichijou director, but I don't think he did part B.

Also, after 4 episodes I can safely say KyoAni can't draw faces/mouths right of characters when they are playing brass instruments. The embouchure is all wrong and they aren't frowning enough.

I finally decided to watch this, and I approve of the main character's cacti/succulents. My collection is pretty similar. :v:

also kyoani got the feel of a mediocre high school band correct, I was cringing throughout the whole tuning section. Who even highlights their music anyway?!

That second-year tuba girl is crushing on Goto pretty hard, good to see the show understands band relationships.

Also neat to see that the tubas are all beat up, as school-provided ones tend to be.

I love this show. My only complaint is not enough percussionists.

I hope Bassdrum-chan ends up being a character that matters.

When I was in the band it was the exact opposite, but it's because we actually had 6 horns my senior year, which was super rare from other people I'd talked to about their school's bands, and 3 of us regularly made it into Allstate and Norcal every year. Two of us were taking private lessons from a backup horn player for the san fran philharmonic.

The year we all graduated, though. Yikes.

Also, fun fact, the double horn I played in high school had a trumpet valve for the 4th valve it was so old. I loved that drat thing.

I'm still on the third episode, but so far Goto is the best character. He's just a more serious version of the potheads that played Tuba in high school. Just not a single gently caress given about pretty much anything.

Edit: God dammit.

That's not the rotor :crossarms:

Edit2: Holy poo poo they're terrible. I don't really blame the teacher for not wanting to bother with ensemble yet, but he should probably at least visit the sectionals to help them with their problems.

He did that in the latest episode and it seems like the bass section is not utterly incompetent compared to the bones who can't play in unison or the French horns who're slackers

A training arc in this would be playing the same section about 50 times while slowly improving

And then bungling it when it comes to performance time

There was a fair amount of member overlap between concert and marching band at my high school, but they were very much separate programs. I'm rather surprised that the show just took the concert band, gave them a few days' practice in marching, and turned them loose.

I mean, poo poo, it got really obvious this episode. Shame Reina seems more interested in the teacher.

Actually, yeah, I want to go back to this, because it's another case of the direction and cinematography being spectacular. The way they've visually articulated a teenager's first major crush (from the teenager's perspective) is pretty much perfect.

Caught up on the last couple episodes. Good stuff. I am consistently pleased with how well the high school band experience has been captured.

I really like Kumiko as a protagonist. She's bumbling in a believable, relatable way, and without being the stereotypical "dojikko". She's just trying her best to get through a trying period in life.

But none of that really matters, nor does any discussion about trumpets without referring to high notes. All trumpets live and die by their upper range, since it has been scientifically proven that trumpets that can hit higher notes have an indisputably larger penis. Playing the trumpet is essentially yelling "SUCK MY DIIIIICK" at everyone within earshot.

As a trumpet player, I have come to this thread for the sole purpose of attesting that this statement, as the OP has claimed it, is Correct and True, always, and for all time, now and forever. And that is why, even in death, Maynard Ferguson has the biggest penis of all. :canada:

It's an interesting kind of show because the MC and her crew aren't the hotshot stars of the band (like in most sports shows), but generic line members. Kousaka and Asuka are the ones with the strong personalities that really stand out from the crowd, and we're supposed to watch them from the MC's eyes.

Also Goto and that chubby girl make the most adorable couple.
