Fojar38 posted:On further analysis it all seems to lead back to this Counterpunch article that cites no sources, claims 10,000 Chinese troops are going to be stationed at the base, and that the US is planning a coup in Djibouti to keep the base. It's largely only been reported by private intelligence firms, not the public media, which is why you're not finding anything. The original report is from May here (you need to pay for it), but what that article states is that sources claim the base is ultimately projected to have 10,000 men and that America might be kicked out. There have been further developments in the meanwhile which make the latter eventuality rather unlikely. China has definitely secured a military base in Djibouti either way though. e: It's been reported in The Diplomat, which notes that official sources haven't said anything and emphasises that the 'kicking the Americans out' thing only applies to Obock which isn't the main US base. e2: Actually the stuff I read at the time seemed pretty confident that China had secured a military base but according to the Diplomat thing the official channels have apparently refused to confirm it Zohar fucked around with this message at 12:01 on Aug 26, 2015 |

Yes, India is pissed off about this and actively building up its forces as well as starting to abandon its traditional neutrality for closer ties to the US. What do you mean "China sucks at diplomacy."

Fojar38 posted:They want to project power into the Indian Ocean. That doesn't befit China's self-image as a great power if it has to rely on other countries to bail its people out of trouble. China was very, very insistent on rescuing its own people with its navy from Yemen recently. It's also more of a political necessity. If Chinese citizens are stranded, taken hostage or harmed, then that would be a nightmare for China's leaders.

Fojar38 posted:They want to project power into the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka's kinda-sorta renegotiating their secondary-port deal with China. Original deal was, China finances the whole goddamn thing, and retains control and borderline-sovereignty over a chunk of it. Okay, fine, fair enough - but thing is, SL traditionally has an enormous bug up its rear end over locally staffed and locally administered stuff (which China is humoring in a related deal with a satellite control facility, incidentally!). So one of the highest-profile enterprises of the new coalition/presidency has been to figure out an angle where A) China still foots most of the bill, because frankly, the port's pretty necessary, but B) it's as Sri Lankan as possible. I doubt this whole sequence of events is all that important to China's operations in Africa, but it does corroborate "China is intensely interested in the Indian Ocean in general".

Going to HK for 9/3 to 9/8. Anyone had a tux made there? I'm hoping to snag a pretty good one for 300-500USD. I used to be a tailor so I know construction, but not in Mandarin/Cantonese. Some bit of English would be nice. Any suggestions? Also could I have it done in that time?

For a decent tux that's cutting it pretty tight. You'll need a few fittings. Also, depending on what season it is, they may be slammed with like wedding requests or whatever. At the end of the day if you're willing to pay extra they'll make it work. My buddy paid 1k in India for three suits and 10 shirts and they had it in less than 24 hours and delivered it to him at the airport lol.
