painted bird posted:gently caress. Eris has a couple of missing feathers on her chest and I'm worried she's plucking. She's also a bit pinfeather-y, so it could be an awkward molt but I'm worried nonetheless. It's still early days, and she has other birds to hang out with. Does she eat the fresh food you give her as normal eatings? Ideas for treats, others can add: -Popcorn -Cheese (teeny pieces) -Cheerios -Muesli -Dried fruits -Cardamon pods -Nuts -Sunflower seeds -Millet -Pasta, cooked or uncooked -Rice (careful on the butter/salt/etc) -Couscous (same as above) -Groats (same as above) -Juice on a spoon -Those seed sticks -Nutriberries -Hummus (depending on ingredients)

1500 posted:For birds that destroy perches, you could try a Dragonwood perch, its supposed to be one of the harder natural wood perches. I have a couple for Bonny and they seem to work well. Those look cool! The vet recommended the ones I got though because they're nice and soft, and apparently her feet need slightly softer perches (for her sleeping one at least) than the ones she's got now. I can look for harder perches for her other perches though.

Skillet usually becomes far too interested in us when we approach with the camera to continue doing interesting solo bird stuff, so my wife tried setting the camera on a flexible ladder she hung off the side of the cage. It's not the most eventful video, but there's a bit of him chattering and singing here and there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3thAKRZjT4 On a side note, we have been working on treating Skillet's (what we assume to be) Giardia. He has plucked a little bit and it's kind of upsetting. The vet prescribed us a course of antibiotics (since the test for Giardia came up negative, but I understand that's pretty typical?) and we went through that, and then they gave us a course of Metronidazole, however, after reading about treatment for it online it looks like it's ineffective more often than not and really bitter. He hated the antibiotics and we don't want to run through a course of this if it's not going to work, and Ronidazole seems to be recommended in a lot of places. Does anybody have any experience with this? Should we just give him the Metronidazole and hope it works?

A friend heard I was bird shopping and introduced me to her parrot-crazy friend. I was hoping he'd be the good kind of bird crazy, but he's basically Timothy Treadwell (Grizzly Man) and poo poo's getting weird. I wanted to ask his opinion on cages and if there are any personality differences between black caps and green cheeks. Between stories about his cockatoos sleeping in his bed and him referring to them as his lovers, I haven't gotten a lot of information out of him.

This sounds uncomfortably like those posts somewhere in this thread about someone on facebook saying they let the birds 'satisfy' themselves on their hands, and they were so cuddly and loving afterwards, and then getting indignant when people said it was weird.

The local bird shop has a kookaburra that's basically the store pet and the employees get him to call by making a trill sound at him. Their goffin cockatoos have learned that this sound makes the kookaburra go nuts, and they've started imitating it and celebrating when he yells back. Cockatoos are such trolls.

Kenshin posted:I'm guessing they have to keep the kookaburra away from all the little birds. That's kookaburras all right. A lot of people outside of Australia don't know that they're big kingfishers and therefore decidedly carnivorous. They love to eat snakes, frogs, small mammals like mice, and so on, but their favourite food is small birbs, including babies and eggs. During breeding season especially, all the other birds will flip out if a kookaburra shows up and chase it around to drive it away, because they know the kookaburra is likely looking for a tasty meal of fresh hatchlings. Just like dolphins are always smiling because they're always happy about killing and raping porpoises, kookaburras are always laughing because they just enough murder so much.

I think you'll find that a kookaburras favorite food is the sausage you were just about to take a bite of. loving dive-bombing bastard birds. One of my physiotherapists I had a few years back lived just on the edge of Perth, bordering on rural, and her house had an old pot-belly stove with a metal chimney. Every afternoon a kookaburra would land on her roof, cram its head into the chimney and laugh, causing it to echo down the chimney and through the whole house.

UK Has the crane, acts all harmless but it has an arsehole trick - the crane likes nothing more than to nest in chimney pots, which sound all quaint and ye olde England until you factor in that it's illegal to touch a birds nest in the UK, and a lot of houses in the north have not especially awesome central heating systems installed because they use coal fires for most of the heating. My parents caved and got double glazing the winter we had cranes - the ice was on the inside of the windows and all our pipes froze. I shall never forget the image of my mother outside in the snow with buckets of hot water attempting to unfreeze the toilet pipes while shouting "would you just Bugger off!!!!" at our chimney.

That seems like it would be the point where you don't care what the law says because you shouldn't have to freeze for a single bird. We kept getting pigeons nesting in the gap between "downstairs" and upstairs of our house, it was technically a highset so the downstairs wasn't closed in properly and legally couldn't be anything but storage. They had mites which came through the floorboards and got in our cats and 2 seperate bedrooms, the solution was to chuck rubber snakes everywhere they nested. Yeah we probably hosed up their breeding season when we did that but it was the third year in a row of having to bugbomb the house.
