Facebook is being investigated by the Senate ? Facebook should just respond that they are a private company and and can trend or not trend whatever the hell they please or be as biased or not as they feel like, basically gently caress off. Pretty rich coming from the party of small government and keeping out of the way of private industry. Of course that's only when it's convenient for them but still it's a little galling to see how quickly they throw their supposed principles under the bus just so they can throw an expensive temper tantrum at the taxpayer's expense.

Did they have magical force field technology, the heroes were all martial arts masters like Daredevil, or the masses were too stupid to figure out how to wield primitive weapons or even understand they were being screwed? They hid. They set up their little summer camp, then Galt went out and recruited them one at a time. As they left they torched all of their own poo poo and disappeared. After they were out of sight for a while they got jobs as short order cooks, and train conductors. They were perfect at all of these jobs. Train lady tries to hire one for her cafeteria and gets blown off. Once they had everything set they hid in their little valley playing with model trains until the civil unrest died down and then they returned to assume their rightful place. One thing that never gets mentions is that going Galt isn't just leaving to do your own thing. He systematically tore the whole thing down. There was a fan theory that the events in the Atlas Shrugged world were so terrible that the people banned all individuality to prevent it from happening again, leading up to Anthem.

Did they have magical force field technology, the heroes were all martial arts masters like Daredevil, or the masses were too stupid to figure out how to wield primitive weapons or even understand they were being screwed? It's pretty much this: Geostomp posted:I would assume that their innate superiority allowed them to easily thwart all attempts from their lessers. That or the lessers managed to realize that these people where so superior that they were instantly cowed once they realized their arrogance for expecting the ubermensch to lift a finger for them just because they paid for their services. In very very brief: Ayn Rand believed that her philosophy could be derived from a set of self-evident first principles, and therefore it's the only philosophy that is both logically justified and objectively true, and anyone with a rational mind that accurately perceives reality will agree with it. Thus, the extent to which you're a good farmer (or accountant, or composer, or artist, or railroad tycoon) is the extent to which you agree with Ayn Rand, maybe not fully, maybe not even consciously. But when you do hear something Randian, you agree with it. So when one of the highly competent supermen protagonists acts like an arrogant selfish rear end in a top hat, anyone with any amount of competence at all will respect and admire them, if you have a sliver of ability it's the same thing that makes you have a sliver of respect and support for the train executive who threatens to leave you to die for expecting basic train service. Anyone who hates and resents the superman is also totally incompetent and ineffectual and can only quiver and wail about it. If I remember right there is one competent guy on the train and when she throws her fit he's like "I'll handle the rescue if you want Miss Taggart, I know you've got way more important ubermensch things to do than your job". Incidentally this is also why anyone Galt talks to immediately joins up: he stalks these various executives until he determines that they're among the elect supermen, because you just have to offer the gnosis to a superman and he'll immediately see the light and join up with the You're probably about to ask a follow-up question: if the only competent people agree with Ayn Rand and the heroes that capitalism is best, then why do socialists control the world of Atlas Shrugged and how are they a threat at all? Ayn Rand's answer is actually, funny enough, a Catholic one: they're not a threat, evil has no actual power, evil is only the absence of the good and its only power lies in deceiving good into using its own power against itself: Ayn Rand calls this "the sanction of the victim" in the book. So the socialists have all the guns and tanks, but only because Rearden makes the steel for them. The socialists control America but only because Dagny runs the trains for them. The villains know this, but the heroes don't. There are tons of examples in the book, like a rehash of Fountainheads stdh.txt courtroom scene where Rearden does a bunch of sovcit "I don't consent to this trial, I don't recognize the legitimacy of your courts" and instead of jailing him for contempt, the judges get flustered because he's not cooperating and so they let him off on his (anti-trust? I don't remember) violations with a slap on the wrist. See they know they can't jail him when they need him to make more steel. Thus the theme of the book: if the supermen who hold up the world shrug it off and hide in their valley, then all the normal people die in an orgy of anarchy, chaos, and destruction, so be nice to the rich. And if you, dear teenage reader, agree then that's proof you're a superman and anyone who doesn't agree with us reveals their own inner untermensch. And yes it does let all the tension out of the climax like a wet fart when you have villains that try as hard as they can not to kill the heroes because the villains can't live without them.

All of the characters have the depth of a cardboard cutout and character development is a bad thing that happens to other authors. There's also an unbelievably lovely monologue in the book. I do not use that word as hyperbole, I truly do not understand how someone can write such a terrible monologue. Depending on the size of print and the book it can range from like 40-60 pages of one character just spewing out rhetorical bullshit completely uninterrupted. Completely. Nobody else says anything, ever, there are no other actions taking place; completely uninterrupted. Not even a 'he said'. It's paragraph after paragraph, page after page of one of these captains of industry vomiting words at the reader. And that's just the criticism you can level at the monologue from a technical writing perspective! If you ever want to torture your brain cells until they beg for the sweet release of death you can try to understand the content of that stream of verbal diarrhea. "X is correct, and since X is correct then Y is correct. This makes anyone that agrees with me obviously the superior person. Now let me use a different word to say that X is correct again to prove that Y is also correct." Repeat that exact same loving thing for like four or five PAGES. Eventually things will meander around having a point or purpose, only to veer off into another four or five pages of "And now that Y is correct, Z is also correct so worship me." I've read some really terrible and terribly written poo poo in my life and powered through it, but I was defeated by that monolith.
