If you re-edit and republish the photos, then any links to the old versions break even though the URL doesn't change.

Grimey Drawer
I got a new phone this week. My LG G4 died a while ago and I couldn't get it fixed so eventually a bit the bullet and bought a G5 because I loved the camera in the G4 and the G5 looks like it is even better. So far, it is. There's a wide-angle lens and a normal aspect lens and the camera will switch between them seamlessly as you zoom in or out. All the controls are exposed for you in manual mode and the UI is close enough to a real camera touchscreen UI. So far I'm very happy with it. At the same time, I bought the LG Camera Plus module. The G5 is sort of modular, the bottom pops off and you can plug in a series of add-ons to it. There's an audio module, a VR headset and the camera module so far. These sound like a good idea but, the implementation is lovely beyond belief.

The Cam Plus has an additional battery inside it to supplement the main phone battery. That's a pretty good idea for people who are into cell phone photography enough to buy a specific camera doodad. After that promising start however, it all breaks down.

The main phone battery is attached to the bottom part of the phone when you pop it out. So, swapping modules means powering down your phone and replacing the battery (unless you have a spare battery, you actually need to snap the battery out of the original holder and attach it to the Cam Plus module - an operation that requires more force than I'm comfortable in routinely applying to a $600 phone).

Secondly the initial installation UX is loving horrible. Here's how it went for me:

- Get module out of box, read the guide that just tells me how the mechanical lock for the bottom of the phone works and how to swap the battery over.
- Remove bottom of phone and swap battery from the phone to the module.
- Plug in module and open the LG Friends manager app (LG calls all of the accessories for the phone Friends for some reason).
- See that the cam plus module is detected in the manager app, select it and am prompted to check for a software update.
- Check for update, get notification that I can't check for updates unless the module is connected.
- Go back and confirm that the manager app detects the module. Restart phone just to be sure.
- Same result. Google the notification text and find a Reddit post saying that you first need to charge the internal battery in the module before it can be updated (nothing in the manual tells you this).
- Plug module into mains, it has a charging port so that you can charge the phone and the module at the same time. Go and do something else for a while.
- Try the update again, get a different notification telling me it's not possible for some reason.
- Google the new notification text and find a post on some Android user forum saying that the module doesn't work when it's plugged in :cripes:
- Unplug the module from the mains and successfully update it.
- Play with the buttons. Find that half of the functionality doesn't exist yet but will apparently be added in a future firmware update.
- Find that the only functionality it has is that the zoom is now controlled by a rather plasticky shoulder wheel, the shutter release is on one button and video capture is on a different button close enough to the shutter release that it's easy to fat finger them both by accident.

The grip is nice but ultimately it's not nice enough to offset the problem that you can't have your expensive, metal bodied phone in a case while it's attached. It wouldn't be so bad if swapping it out was easier, but it's really not. It doesn't add any functionality to the camera, apart from the extended battery and a hand grip, the camera app is exactly the same, the optics aren't changed at all and there's no new shooting mode added from the controller.

So, LG G5 awesome phone camera, beyond lovely camera module. Also, while googling how to make the loving thing work, I ran into a bunch of posts saying that they were on their third or fourth module as previous ones had stopped working. I cant imagine why you would continue to replace this piece of poo poo, especially as the phone was only released in April so, having multiple hardware failures in ~6 months speaks badly of the build quality.

Here's a shot I took with the default LG camera app using the wide-angle lens in my living room (all photos SOOC).

Here's the camera module, taken with the regular-aspect lens.

And here's a screenshot of the camera UI.
