Just sent a PM for the FB page. I just recently got accepted to a nursing program for this fall semester. My biggest fear is that I feel like I haven't retained much from my pre-req classes. Is there anything in particular that would be helpful to brush up on? Other then preparing myself for no life and lots of tears? :v:

No.

Maybe pharmacology, but only to familiarize yourself with the names of drugs. You'll learn everything along the way.

Yeah I mean if you really want to impress people refresh yourself on the basics of A&P and med terminology, but that's just if you wanna be the class smartass (like me). I can't count the number of times that my nursing profs would start talking about basic body systems and half the class would get a glazed deer in headlights look on their faces.

you can actually inflate your scrote pretty safely with sterile saline, syringes, needles, and aseptic technique. its a niche kink iirc

the saline just slowly gets absorbed into your blood but in the meantime you got a big round smooth distended nutsack

once i get that nursing money, im gonna buy plat AND archives. the good life here i come

Wasn't serious about leg shaving for socks. But if you want something badly enough, you've got to commit.

I get Sockwell ones on Amazon. They are a thicker material and I don't know what it's like to have hairy legs, but if anyone else is looking for recommendations I really like that brand.

And K Swiss shoes.

Let me know what you find out. We're torn between a few places for moving eventually after school. If we knew more people in the PNW I think we would probably end up in Portland but that seems less and less likely. I just finished my summer semester (Psych, OB, Peds, and an EBP class) and good god I am glad to be done. Can't wait to start complex care, if anyone has any tips for that. I decided to take the ACLS class, and I'll be doing that and likely some NCLEX prep over my quick break to prepare for fall. I did have a nurse in the peds ED give me her contact info to use as a reference in another hospital's ICU where she's transitioning to work full time, so that felt pretty cool!

What did you study? I'm using UWorld and Lacharity and it's helping alot. I have to retake the NCLEX because last month I took it and ran out of time at question 230 and ended up failing. My report said I was near passing in all areas. Honestly though I only used Saunders for that attempt and I feel like I concentrated more on just memorizing facts.

Any advice for the "easiest test" I'll ever have to retake?

amethystbliss

I have good connections from clinicals, so job prospects are looking good, but I just want to be strategic about it. I'm doing my PMHNP degree starting this fall which is fully funded by the VA (they're paying tuition + monthly stipend in exchange for two years of working there when I finish). So I just need to find something part-time to bridge the gap for the next two years.

I only studied for ~2 weeks, but did an accelerated program so everything was pretty fresh. I studied like it was my full-time job, and mainly focused on drilling as many questions as possible and reading rationales/looking up answers for every question I missed. I did >3,000 questions over the course of 2 weeks to prep. I'd say Kaplan self-paced course was the most helpful for strategies (there's a good coupon code floating around), and Kaplan's layout mirrored NCLEX pretty closely. Saunders was good for looking up content that I didn't remember. I also listened to Hurst lectures in the car to refresh content, and occasionally used the NCLEX Mastery app. If you were near passing, I'd imagine some extra work on strategies would help get you over the line :). Good luck!

Might be wise to not mention that you're moving straight on to more schooling during your interview. It costs a hospital something like $40k to train a new nurse and you've got an end date in sight. Also working around school schedules is difficult.

Are you already accepted in the program? Do you have psych experience?

I'm in a master's entry program that involves 1 year pre-licensure RN training + 2 years NP training. You're accepted to your specialty track when you apply. I just finished the first year, and will continue to the psych NP training in the fall. I have a decent amount of psych experience; I have a master's degree in a related field, and have worked for the VA in psychiatric research for 5 years managing various research trials and doing diagnostic assessments. I've also done some mental healthcare research abroad. I was initially going to go the clinical psych PhD route, but after doing the publishing and conference presentation circuit for a few years, decided academia wasn't for me. I definitely prefer working with patients. I initially started undergrad in a BSN program ages ago, but then life happened and I switched majors/moved abroad for a while, so becoming an RN has been a long time coming :).

I'm doing a new grad internship now for the summer (unpaid), and the hiring manager said a position is opening next month that they'd love to consider me for. She knows I'm moving straight into more schooling, so I'm hopeful. It's not psych (L&D/mother/baby), but it's a great unit. Until then, I just got my first offer to give flu shots to people who work at Google for the next few months?

Failed by time and categories. Maximum time is six hours. That puts you at an average of a minute and a half per question. It could be the case that a few more questions would have tipped you over but not realistically. This means you failed to meet the benchmark for your trailing questions. Focusing on speed would ignore this. It could take someone 5:55 to answer 75 questions and as long as the trailing questions meet or exceed the benchmark, they would be stopped and passed.

Studying facts alone is easy because rote memorization can be a simple process but it will not lead to success. Integrating facts implied in a question to deduce the most correct answer is what the test is based on.

You should be honest with yourself about being 'near' passing. The computerized test doesn't have grey areas. Those areas will be scored as failing.

Seek out resources provided by your school and utilize them if able.

UWorld is the way to go. The rationales are a wealth of information. Read the rationales for every question. Tackle one subject or system at a time. Doing this reinforces the material. That's what I did, studied using UWorld alone, and passed first try in 75 questions.

The last few posts have convinced me even further to buy Uworld. I'm gonna use it for complex care also. My plan is that, Saunders practice questions (all of them), Lacharity, and I guess thats it. Not planning on taking a Kaplan course unless I really need to. My school has some ATI resources for us as well. I think its more important at this point to know how to answer the questions then all the facts because there are a million things to know.
