I freaking love the teamwork in this series. It walks that fine line between having everyone work together but still give every character the chance to do something cool. Kaminari was pretty bad-rear end. Also, meat processing quirk... Jesus!

Jerkface posted:Owns. Froppy passed Yep. Seeing her just sitting there alongside Todoroki and Yaoyorozu, among others, was pretty great. Though I'm kind of surprised that everyone looks like they're passing; I was expecting some of the U.A. kids to fail. But I guess this is just the beginning and all, so, bit early for them to lose to the riff-raff.

To expound: Horikoshi has consistently shown that he is willing to utilize common shounen tropes in a slightly different way than usual, in a way that keeps it interesting. On top of that, the quality of his work makes his use of some tropes irrelevant, everything is so well executed, well drawn, and well written that having the delivery mechanism be a little trope-y doesn't matter at all - or, if it does matter, it just makes it that much better because we see that these tropes can still deliver. The class as a whole has gone up against actual villains multiple times which the manga goes out of its way to point out gives them a lot more experience than a typical student class so it's not exactly unbelievable

Meat Processing seems like a crazy-strong Quirk. The OHKO 'You are now a horrible sausage lump' power is obviously really powerful, but it seems like Seiji could also could create a good deal more 'body reinforcing' than he is currently to shore up his weakness in close range combat. Maybe he just didn't do so since he was maintaining so many sausage transformations at once in this particular battle.

Crasical posted:Meat Processing seems like a crazy-strong Quirk. It's crazy strong in one-on-one but a little weaker in group fights if his lumps deactivate when he's hit. Maybe he can fix that weakness with more training. Also since he is just using flesh I wonder if he'd be able to do much to someone with super strength.

Josuke Higashikata posted:The U.A not losing a single member is contrived and boring. Really it kinda isn't since we haven't really seen UA's actual relative grandeur established next to the other schools. All we know is the kids from UA are pretty okay at fighting off mook-tier badguys and can beat mid-class villains at a pretty considerable sacrifice.

Processed Meat is a pretty strong quirk but this dude isn't exactly using it optimally. That's not a complaint, just an observation of his character. Josuke Higashikata posted:The U.A not losing a single member is contrived and boring. The latter might be contrived, the former not so much.

Remember, this is the easy bit. They didn't have to fight the real monsters, and could concentrate on banding together and eliminating the weaker foes en masse. I imagine we'll start to see 1A students drop out in the upcoming rounds, as they're forced to face off against genuinely troublesome enemies.

I hope we get to see a bit of all the U.A groups still fighting in this round. Even just small snippets, because seeing how new tech was used for Kaminari was very hype and i'm wondering how any other of the sorta limited powers have gotten upgrades. Kind of think one of the remaining groups won't make it though. Expecting it to be the Aoyama/Iida pair, but I hope i'm wrong.

Josuke Higashikata posted:The U.A not losing a single member is contrived and boring. Their entire class has a substantial amount of experience dealing with actual life and death situations against honest to god villains trying to kill them, so they have a pretty huge edge on most of their opponents, and all of them are utilizing teamwork to cover each other from any major "gotcha" moments when they get ambushed by an unknown quirk(such as Kaminari saving Bakugou and Kirishima despite those two getting blindsided). It wouldn't be terribly contrived for all of them to pass(they haven't all passed yet).

yeah UA not losing anyone just means that they haven't been taken out, not that they're all proceeding. i'd be shocked if everyone makes it to the next round. honestly I'm sorta surprised one of the current Deku Trio didn't say "there's no way I'll make it past next round, eliminate me and go on" to Deku.

Nah, Deku, Uraraka, and Sero are all through. We saw them tagging the enemies they'd incapacitated with the boulder trick. This section really was just a walk in the park to show off 1A's power, with the actual challenges still to come.

New Chapter: Everyone in 1-A has worked really hard so they all deserve to pass and I hope they all pass. Contrived maybe, but after OFA vs AFO the manga can be as happy as it wants to be. The only one that I'd say shouldn't pass solo is Kouda since his quirk is poo poo for this setting, but he's with my man Tokoyami so he'll be fine. I'm wondering what role Old Man and Baby Army is going to play though. Asking them to fight veterans and children after being whittled down to 100 from 1500 sounds extreme, so it's gotta be something else right?
