My company doesn't take loan payoffs because it costs too much in fees because even if it's 3%, 3% of 10k is apparently too much for a guaranteed paid off loan. Unless you are a very large retailer and process millions of transactions a month, not likely. I know there was a major spat between Walmart and Mastercard some years ago because Mastercard wanted Walmart to pay close to the same interchange as everyone else, and of course Walmart was having none of it. Its likely much more than 3... Your processor may charge 2-3% for each transaction, and then you end up paying another 2%-3% for interchange (depending on type of card). Actual could be 5-6%. stevewm fucked around with this message at 21:50 on Nov 9, 2016 |

Either my boss has reached new levels of dumb or I'm being trolled. Yesterday, after lunch: "Where were you?" "I was voting, as I let you know I would be in my email this morning." "Where's your sticker?" "They were out." "It's only 2:30. Can you go back and get one?" "You want me to get you a voting sticker?" "I want proof you were there and not goofing off." "So you want me to go back and stand in line for another hour as proof I went there earlier? What does that prove about earlier?" "Fine, forget it." Today: "So, who did you vote for?" "Doesn't matter, Trump won. Somehow." "Oh, so you voted for Shillary?" "I sure as poo poo didn't vote for Trump." "Well, either way, you wasted your vote. I don't want you to take work time to do this voting thing next year." (Uh...) "You got it." (Like I'll still be here next election cycle anyway.)

Just pile it on top of the mountain of other things the US has hosed up: no national standard for allowing workers to go vote. Many states have employee favoring laws but many do not, and still others are in a lovely middle ground where you have to give prior notice to your boss or similar bullcrap. All that hand wringing about GOTTA GO VOTE!!! every fall and no one thinks to make it a guaranteed right.

My employer sent out an email stating that we should all have plenty of time to vote before or after work so they won't be allowing leave to do it during our shift. It was sent to our internal-only email.

The problem is already solved, just need the federal government to take the template that most states use ("two hours off work unless you already have two hours of off duty time during the polling period") and apply it to everyone. Bam, done.

I could pull up my excel document that has all that info, but I'm too lazy. *edit* I was incorrect, out of the 30 states I had to deal with, 20 have mandatory 2 hours (or more) of voting time, and about 15 of those require the time to be paid. Fill out the ballot when it's convenient, no lines, no taking time off work. Costs you a stamp instead of hours of your life waiting in line. Of course there's going to be no traction on any laws or policies that improve overall voter turnout in the near future, since it's in the interests of the controlling government to keep it difficult to vote for people who currently have difficulty voting. They don't give you stamps to file taxes so I don't know why they'd give stamps or postcards to vote. It's 34 measly cents, I think we can afford it. Plus once they go to mail in voting, online voting will be right behind it. Yes it would be better to leap right into that bold new future, but baby steps are better than no steps.

One of the theoretical benefits of the amount of autonomy our states have is the "laboratories of democracy" idea, where states can individually try different things and see how they work out without impacting the whole country, then the rest can learn from that and if necessary tweak things to fit their local needs and wants. In practice we end up with two or three major categories of solutions to any given problem implemented in 50 slightly different ways, never harmonizing unless forced to.

Does your country organize 70 million people voting on the same day? Not saying Saturday is a bad idea, I think it's definitely reasonable to move to a Saturday and organize the manpower necessary to open school gyms for polling locations. But if it's a national holiday good luck getting unions to agree to pay facility managers / janitors / security / support staff time and a half or better to keep public facilities open.

There's an easier solution: make the election last over three days including a weekend day, and make it a federal felony not to vote. e. there would probably need to be a None Of The Above on the ballot to satisfy First Amendment requirements in that case. rndmnmbr fucked around with this message at 05:44 on Nov 10, 2016 |

You sent people to the loving moon and back. If you can't organise corralling people for one day every four years then it's because you suck, not because it's some kind of impossible undertaking that has never ever ever been attempted before in the history of human, neanderthal, and dinosaur civilisation. Everything is working, thank you for your time. Really god drat awkward conversation, I was expecting a phone tree not a 1 ring pickup. It's working from my phone must be my line! Okay let's test it I'm busy now! She is clearly on facebook, and has the exact same restrictions I do. I kind of want to pull up her call history but it wont any good since she wont do anything. She's a crabby old lady that every knows bullshits everything and building a case will just get her more hostile towards IT. She's pretty much untouchable since she's the only person who understands a few software packages and wont train anyone. Big tower of blaming IT for not calling a customer if I didn't make a show of it's now working fine magically she'd be CCIng 12 people and asking for the ticket number and an ETA on the fix. I hate playing her bullshit games. At least no one believes them.
