I don't think they wanted to do it better exactly, but they definitely came to the US for a con (or something) and ended up binging on those kinds of shows and went "How come we can't do that? Can we do that? Let's do that!" Regardless, it's hilarious and good.

The confusion and absence of any real explanation of what happened immediately after 2.0 creates a situation where it's impossible to ascertain Shinji's guilt, to know the truth of what happened. Now you bring that up I'm curious as to how other people think that gap went. To me it was always just basic stuff like the split between NERV and Gendo, and Misato maybe internalizing her guilt at cheerleading on the apocalypse as anger at Shinji. What else happened that needs to be accounted for? Edit: Oh, the entire Mark 06/12th Angel thing, right. If you want to get M E T A you could say that the series settled into a period of stasis and anomie as without Shinji etc everyone was sat around spinning their wheels, unable to take the next step and face their problems/fix their poo poo. Just like the audience.

Ok so kill la kill is evangelion but overall optimistic rather than cynical. Fuyutski and Gendo say something like the chaos of the human heart is preferable to the pure and sterilized Antarctic sea, even though second impact was essentially preordained by scripture. Scripture that they know is basically infallible. Which is similar to Ryuko's decision to fight to save everyone from the "preordained" consumption by the fabric aliens. Ofc Ryuko's reasons are motivated by her love for her friends, whereas gendo had rather selfish reasons. I like Ryuko more than Shinji, but of course I would.
