My landlord at a previous house put down flimsy wood paneling as flooring in the unfinished attic and didn't mention that it was just cardboard and not actually wood flooring. I stepped right through the illusion of a floor the first time I went in there. You had to walk around in there in socks so that you could feel the joists through the paneling, since you couldn't see where they were.

Facebook Aunt posted:How does that even happen? There doesn't seem to be enough "stuff" for the person to have gone through a floor. Maybe an unfinished attic type thing where you have to walk along the joists, and he didn't? My dad did this last summer while we were installing an antenna in the attic. Fortunately, he caught himself by grabbing an air duct and didn't come all the way through the ceiling. Even more fortunately, he fell over a bedroom. If he had fallen 2 feet earlier, it would have been over the 2-story entryway. We immediately put down more plywood flooring in the attic after that.

Can you report code violations of private residences and is code enforcement likely to do anything about it?

NancyPants posted:Can you report code violations of private residences and is code enforcement likely to do anything about it? Yes. I had some very loud (screaming fights, revving motorcycles at 4am, etc) neighbors living in lovely run down shack of a house. I reported the property to code enforcement every week for about two months. The house ended up getting condemned and torn down. It's back to being nice and quiet now. I would like to add that had the neighbors been nice people and respectful of the other neighbors I wouldn't have done anything. They could have lived there in a tent for all I care. That was just a good way to get rid of them.

The deathtrap-dungeon guy took it pretty well, despite having basically been excoriated by most of the internet. It's slightly less likely to kill someone (though having not noticed the candles, before, he seems a little slow to learn).

I don't get the bathrooms where the counter extends over the toilet tank. Has the architect never had a toilet in their own home?

This rear spud toilet (Neither rear or bottom mounting flanges actually went anywhere, toilet was set in the concrete pad)... Was set directly to this 3" drain... And constantly leaked, and was terrible. So lets zip the wall open... Mixing pipes, multiple wet vents being drained into sub 3" drains, open vents, sump line doing whatever the gently caress it feels like...etc. Hella rad. Lets saw up the floor and see whats up with this poo poo... Oh, dope... Well, I guess I'll take a break, its snowing and raining constantly anyways... gently caress. Time to get the dehu's and carpet fans. Wondering why I've lived here for 4 months and never heard the sump go off, GFCI tripped and I was too lazy to check it once in a while. Good excuse for a new toilet on a real pad, new sump and a fancy quiet check valve. Home ownershiiiiip.

Got another Imgur DIY for y'all: DIY Kitchen Upgrade. Before: After: At least he hired actual contractors to rip out part of the wall. My personal favorite highlights were the $10K remodel that didn't even replace the cabinets, $600 on hardwood planks from Ikea to make the countertops, and the new sink being smaller than the old sink (not to mention undermounted to a wood countertop... there's no way that's not gonna rot). Oh and also he paid for custom cabinet doors to be made... for the original 1950s cabinets that are glued to the wall "and are probably gonna come down in 10 years or so when I re-do the whole kitchen". It just seems like for the kinda money he was paying and the kind of work he was putting in anyway, he could have easily gutted and re-did the whole thing for not much more money or effort. Probably not the worst thing I've ever seen, but still entertaining. 30 Goddamned Dicks fucked around with this message at 20:07 on Feb 12, 2017 |

My friend recently replaced their cramped and annoying dual set for a single huge sink (fitting into the same space) and it's such an improvement it's unbelievable. I can get it if the house is kept kosher or something, but that doesn't explain why 99% of the rest of the population does it.

Dual sinks only make sense if you both hand wash dishes and each basin is big enough for a typical day's worth of dishes and your largest pots and pans.

A lot of people put dirty dishes in the sink to be rinsed before loading the dishwasher. Some of those people even have lovely enough dishwashers to warrant that.

I've never had a dishwasher so I don't even know how that wizardry works. But I've seen friends with crappy ones basically putting in 75% of the work they'd do just hand washing before loading their machine because it's garbo.

With modern dishwashers, pre-rinsing fools the sensors into thinking your dishes are cleaner than they are, so they come out less clean. If you just put them in filthy the machine goes into full DishFucker 9000 mode and does a better job. Of course, your mileage may vary with certain dishes, stains, and lovely machines, but that's how it's SUPPOSED to work. Cascade Complete pacs are consistently top-rated for cleaning and spot-prevention.

Cascade Complete pacs are consistently top-rated for cleaning and spot-prevention. It's amazing every single time. We use the Cascade 3-color pacs in 1.5 year old modern high end dishwasher, you can't really hear it running, and stuff comes out spotless. I just get the literal solids off, usually with my napkin, and load it. My biggest regret right now is not buying the one with an integrated garbage disposal. To put that regret in perspective it's somewhere between "I regret eating all of the cookie batter" and "I regret eating all of the double batch of cookie batter." I also nearly spit take my coffee at DishFucker 9000.

I bought my dishwasher because it had STAINLESS STEEL CHOPPING BLADES in all caps on the front of it. I have not regretted this decision in the slightest, and i dont pre wash or rinse any drat thing.

We use one sink to hold dirty dishes until the dishwasher is finished running. Frequently you make a lot more than one load worth when cooking/serving dinner. The other sink is for vegetable washing, plate scraping, and hand washing. It's definitely a hold over from pre-dishwasher times but it's relatively handy.
