I kind of want them to release a red Mac Pro with unchanged hardware just to watch the reactions of those who still believe in a future with macOS

Do the new AMD chips run cooler than Intel's? Because I'm a little amazed at how cool the new MBP's run. It's easily 20 to 30 degrees cooler than the old models at peak loads.

Krispy Kareem posted:Do the new AMD chips run cooler than Intel's? Mobile Ryzen hasn't been shown off yet, and TDPs on laptop chips haven't come down so this must be an artifact of system design rather than CPU changes. Either that or they're really aggressively throttling the chips down.

Next gen Mac Pro will be a thunderbolt add-on exclusively for the 15" Macbook Pro. It's just going to be a video card in an enclosure and cost $2,000.

IUG posted:New cheap iPad, more storage in the phones, and coloring them red. quote:Update: After a careful look at Apple's iPad comparison page, we've found the new iPad's Achilles' heel. It's screen isn't laminated to the glass and doesn't have the anti-reflective treatment found on the screen of every other iPad. The iPad Air 2, by comparison, had a fully-laminated screen, which removes a visible gap between the display and the glass cover. If you've used a device with a laminated screen (which includes most phones out there now), the notion of going backwards there isn't promising. hey we need to sell a cheaper ipad... what should we skimp on? the screen? ... do it.

So what are the active iPad models now? Has this streamlined them at all? iPhone: SE, 7, 7+ Mac: iMac (has not and, because they have went 3rd party display, will not be another one). Laptop: MacBook Air, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook pro with touch bar. iPad: iPad mini, iPad Air, ipad, iPad Pro small and iPad Pro big. What a loving mess.

The processor is 2 or 3 generations newer though and runs 800mhz slower. I don't recall what the 2012 ran like when it was new. Maybe it's just not cooling as well as it once did.

I’m saying that the new model run in the nineties under peak loads—practical loads, not benchmarks or viruses. It’s hardly possible to be 20–30° hotter than that.

I know people like to say in this thread that all of the Mac stuff is some insignificant portion of Apple's revenue with iDevices and the App Stores making up the lion's share, thus their indifference to the product line. Perhaps they could spin it off into an independent corporation who gives a poo poo about updating these product lines and growing their customer base? I'd like to think that corporation would be profitable on its own with the Apple markups on everything.

I'd like to think that corporation would be profitable on its own with the Apple markups on everything. Probably not. Apple's real good at plotting consumer trends and customers just don't want desktops or even laptops like they used to. An iPad with a keyboard will do 90% of the stuff the average household needs. The other 10% can't be done because of browser incompatibilities that will be solved in future versions of Safari (or the web finally abandoning Flash). You don't even need a computer to print anymore. I keep having to remind my family that I don't need everything emailed to me to print from my desktop. Just use your phone. Duh.
