You can see them inch forward like not even a step. It's such a tiny detail, and so hard to see, and to catch. That blurry thing in the foreground looks like it might be a person too, lying on the ground with their head pointed toward the camera. That's just a guess, since I see something flapping up after the eva lands, and it could be an arm.

Other funny things about the fight are that they show a shot of the top half of an eva spinning through the air without its lower half. But later on, when they all stand back up, none of them look like they were cut in two.

There's a moment where unit 02 sort of pivots in midair and it's always bothered me. She's spinning in one direction, and then against all the laws of physics rotates just a tiny bit back, before an eva throws something at her or something. It must be really tough to make a scene like that look so good, though, so I forgive them.

I appreciate you pinpointing that, I was just looking at lo-fi eva youtube amvs trying to figure out when that happened but I couldn't figure it. shiiiet, I never noticed either. evangelion sure is full of casual easily missed brutality

Wasn't the "Hit them again" line something the dub added in when they were raiding the NERV base in EoE?

That, plus the gooey sound effects from when Misato shoots the soldier about to execute Shinji, and when the Rei-va series stab themselves with the fake Lances are the only ..... things that were 'added' between localization? That and the 'gratuitous swearing'. I feel like Misato saying, "SO loving WHAT IF I'M NOT YOU" is pretty appropriate, as well as Shinji realising that he is, indeed, "so hosed up".

The weird SFX is bad.

The lines of dialogue from Misato, Shinji and the Flamethrower Man are fine. Misato's "So loving what" is one of the more memorable bits from the Eva dub.

After I learned about the flamethrower line, I've always noticed how they barely squeezed it in there. Like the guy pulls the trigger pretty much before the guy finishes talking. It's a little ooof ugh urgh ugh.

I'm of the opinion that the Eva dub is good. By the time you hit EoE, every character is noticeably beyond their breaking point.

Fuyutuski's zoned-out deadpan "sweet jesus it's an anti-AT field" is incredibly fitting considering the hell he's been party to unleashing over the course of the series, and now that poo poo is about to come to a close, he's just looking forward to the apocalyse finally kicking into high gear.

Yeah, I dig that delivery, too. It's very much a 'Well, poo poo, the apocalyptic chickens have come home to roost' delivery. It's subdued without sounding bored. He's a little bit upset but he'd expected it, really. He's resigned the apocalypse, which is basically the biggest bullet point on his character. If he was louder and more obviously surprised, it'd be like he didn't know this could happen.

I loving loved his delivery when I first watched EoE when I was like, 15. It wqs just full of "Oh, gently caress."

But I can also appreciate how :effort: it sounds

The primary cast of Eva's dub is good, especially once you get into the series a bit and Allison Keith gets less squeaky and more mature (by the end I actually prefer her version of Misato to Kotono Mitsuishi's). I wouldn't defend Spike Spencer's voice in a vacuum, but it just works here.

The secondary and bit characters, on the other hand...

What stood out to me was Spike's line delivery when he's attacking the Geofront; in the original anime, it sounds bland and a little rushed, whereas in Rebuild he nails it.

For me it's the (non dub) guttural scream as he forces himself across the threshold to save Rei at the end of 2.22.

The one English VA that completely nailed his role though is Tristan MacAvery as Gendo.

Tiffany Grant did as well, but that's probably because she went a little far beyond "method acting" and basically became Asuka.

John Swasey isn't a bad Gendo but I think replacing Tristan MacAvery in the platinum cuts or whatever was a disappointment. MacAvery just did some of the lines (the one about spurring time forwards and the one about truth being fragile in particular) with more interesting delivery.

Rewatched the series recently, it's fun to pick up little details I didn't pick up on before. Such as the fact Zeruel makes growling noises of dismay as it starts getting its rear end kicked, I always figured those came from unit 01 but they actually don't! Kinda felt like it cheapened things a bit, but then I thought about it and it kind of works as a way to reinforce the idea that the Angel is now reduced to just a big, powerful creature trying to fight for its life versus an equal or whatever. The body horror and grotesque aspect of that scene is really great. Big time fall from grace as it lies there getting munched on. Is that a glimpse of what an Adam-based Earth would be? Angels eating each other? It does seem like Angels lack any way to understand themselves even when they are intelligent, so perhaps it really would just be a big hellish ecosystem of demigods tearing into each other or coexisting in silence broken by attempts at communication and resulting struggles. Then again, perhaps the Angels are lonely and devoid of understanding because they are fated to wake up, advance on Central Dogma and go through their struggles alone.

For some reason I always start thinking a lot about the psychology of the various Angels and not just the main cast, you can extrapolate a lot just from how they behave and look. Matarael is almost adorable with how weak and dumpy it is. I think Arael is the most terrifying Angel. Its motivations and potential method to reach Adam are incomprehensible, and you can kinda extrapolate what weird poo poo it might have gone on to do if they didn't obliterate it with the lance. Unlike the other communicative Angels, it remains utterly and completely alien because it doesn't reveal anything about itself apart from the fact that it wants to dissect Asuka.

I really forgot how creepy Gendo looks in the entire flashback episode, he has this haunted leering intensity to him. It's also fun the first time he hunkers down into the gendopose but you can tell he hasn't had as much practice with it yet. Yui's actions are also interesting when you think of how she acts with the same kind of detached, alien determination as Rei, even though she is obviously more personable having grown up as an actual human being.

I also tried the dub for a bit, and Misato actually gets quite good towards the end, but holy poo poo was it impossible to take any scene with Kensuke seriously. But it was worth it for the "Sweet jesus it's an anti-AT field" line in EoE. I also keep forgetting the wild tone shifts in the first third of the series, goddamn

Gendo basically has those lines under his eyes and that's all he needs to drive home how unhinged he looks. The glasses kinda hide that feature, and it's really present in the flashback. Good poo poo.

:words: about angel psychology.

My point of view of the Angels are that they're 1) Pretty alien from our point of view. 2) Only recently born, and thus technically are just child versions of whatever form of life they'd propagate after initiating an impact and 3) Basically terrified and lashing out because we humans messed about with their parent and caused second impact, and also we're using the cloned flesh of said parent to kill them.

From their point of view we're the incomprehensable horrors.
