I figured you'd miss out on little jokes and references and stuff mostly, or just take slightly longer to get stuff so stuff doesn't quite land they way it should, like seems to happen in conversations a bit. Like I said that's not a scientific viewpoint because it's not my area so if I'm completely wrong that's very cool.

I wasn't coming down on either side, just saying the conversation seemed loud and ill informed, and "this is how the brain works based the headline of an article on I loving Love Science" is a topic that comes up constantly on these forums. Yeah, I was probably crude in my description, but there is some very interesting research into how we conceive of language learned as children versus language learned as adults.

My old boss, an American, used to enjoy quizzing me on the meaning of little references and jokes, like he'd ask me if I knew what butt chugging was (it is a barbaric practice whereby alcohol is "drunk" through the human anus, instead of through the mouth, which is the normal way). I knew all of them and it would annoy him because he believed that native speakers were better teachers and much of his ego was based on that idea.

If you go and talk to scientists they will tell you that a lot of things in whatever field they're in are much less certain than they may appear, and that's for relatively established fields, with something like neuroscience they don't have any idea how half the poo poo works.

Not to distract from amateur linguistic chat but I finished The Sympathizer yesterday and thought it was really funny. Like people kinda pissed and moaned about it being overwritten but to me it seemed like a parody of some LeCarre poo poo.

it's not really relevant but I remember my friend going to a frat party and being told to get his pants off and butt chug, an d when he refused saying that this was kind of weird, everyone started chanting "stop being a human being, butt chug a beer", so he left without getting his voluntary and extremely heterosexual party enema. that's my butt chug story

Here's a good article written by the last great American president, Theodore Roosevelt, on the distinction between a good boy versus a goody-goody boy: http://www.foundationsmag.com/americanboy-com.html

I read a bunch of Montaigne and Brothers Karamazov and I take back what I said about Dostoevsky for those of you keeping score at home.

My big takeaway from Montaigne is that it's okay to be a complete loving retard. He's a man who cannot read for more than an hour at a time, thinks most books are poo poo and who retains virtually nothing of what he read. Apropos the general thread discussion, he spoke many languages but considered most of them to be gay.

Um so I just finished Lincoln in the Bardo and it made me feel things I have never felt reading a book and was also very good apart from that. Probably my favourite book I've read so far this year.

I also just finished Alejandro Zambra's Multiple Choice which was kinda cool but kind of not (ie. I kind of hated it for being so direct and uninhibited). Anyone have thoughts on this?
