Do people still think this? Ideas sets run for about a year. I remember they pulled all the Wall E sets for a while and made new ones.

The real fun of living wisely is that you get to be smug about it.

Forgive the anecdote but I'm not a regular Lego customer at all - I've only bought one other set for myself as an adult - but the Saturn V was compelling enough to get me standing in line in the mall this morning.

The size and the modularity make it a good display piece and the price is low enough that I won't second-guess spending money on it. Plus space poo poo is loving cool.

Will be a fun Father's Day build with my 7 year old and extra fun trying to keep my toddler who just tries to eat small things at bay.

Mine says it left Fedex's Romeoville, IL facility about 3 hours ago.

Called around at about 11am this morning. Tukwila had two left, and he expected they'd last about 10 minutes. Belleveue was sold out. None of the 3 Barnes & Nobles had any clue about them, and despite having new shipments, no Saturn V among them. Guess I'll just have to suffer until it gets here Wednesday.

Vader transformation is almost literally the same set as the carbon freezing chamber. It's kind of neat and the helmet play feature is super clever but I feel like both of those sets pretty much exist to find a way to charge $25 for 3 minifigures.

My GF said she'd give the Saturn to me as a birthday present if I wanted it. I am not a space nerd per se and lego collection is small but we proudly display Tower Bridge on the living room wall as well as Big Ben on the other side of the room. We like them because we both have thing for London and they are cool display pieces and so is the rocket. It is a part of history, it took the first humans to the moon. This makes displaying the rocket the slightly nerdy but a) way cheaper and b) imho cooler alternative to hanging a Picasso from the wall.
Without exception everybody who ever came to see us went "woah what a cool model" at the TB and BB and I expect the rocket will do the same. Just a piece that is cooler than your dad's bronze figure of an Indonesian monk or whatever.

tl;dr: rocket is a cool display piece for anyone

It's still available for backorder in EU lego online stores, although the estimated shipping date keeps slipping and is now at 5 July. I back ordered it on the 31st of May and it's now showing "In Warehouse", so I'm pretty sure there's more coming no matter what the US site says.

I know it was always a decently popular set, but did anybody actually think it would be quite this popular?

I think it's fine to do that when things are on clearance and they're expunging stock at the end of a set's life cycle, but doing that on day 1 is the worst. Reminds me of the dude who filled an entire room floor to ceiling with Transformers Masterpiece Soundwaves, which were 2 per store iirc.

Also reminds me of the dude who would openly brag about doing this sort of thing and people found his address and robbed him. :unsmigghh:

Oh sure, that's fine to me too, everyone who was looking forward to getting one has already got one, and the people buying them later will be those who weren't collecting at the time. When something is already scarce it's pretty lovely to make it MORE scarce then double the price.

They have nothing to lose. Whatever they don't sell after 29 days, they take back to the store. What I want to know is, how do they get so many in the first place? Like how does a store let you carry out 30 of them on day one.

Family members, neighbors, and friends who are willing to buy one for them. They often bribe them with an extra ten bucks or something to do that.

They don't come from a single buy, they either have a route to visit several stores in a rapid loop, or have helpers/kids/slaves to ring up several separate purchases.

Probably some shenanigans with employees at retail stores buying their own inventory too.

At the risk of sounding like a dealer trying to get another target hooked, you should check out some of the stuff Lego's put out recently if you're interested in awesome Lego stuff again. Especially if it's Space stuff, they released an amazing spaceship similar to the Classic Space sets from the 80's alongside the Lego Movie:

Same boat I was all about Legos as a kid and mentioned how I couldn't wait until my daughter was old enough to have a crate of them to my fiancé, so she went to target and surprised me with the AT-ST and Y-Wing set. 20 years since I had that feeling of excitement and it all came flooding back.
