Which is cool by me because I love the poo poo out of the bricktober sets. Modulars that aren't 3000 pieces? Yes please. I also liked the 3 in 1 train they had a couple years ago. I bought like five of them and had a cute little mini train.

The modular creator sets have sub-builds that rearrange nicely to reconfigure into other builds without fully disassembling the set. Like the lighthouse where the tower layers come apart and the hut can quickly reconnect in several ways. The various houses were made to easily add rooms or fixtures to one another. Not sold on it, but I remember thinking blacktron was super cool that it did the same kind of mixing and matching of sections.

I had the modular lighthouse, it comes apart as follows: house, roof, lighthouse base, 4 sections of lighthouse, dock, backyard, 2 rocky outcroppings. The dock, yard, and rocks can all be arranged in different ways around the base. The lighthouse sections and house's roof have the same footprint, so you can build part or all of the lighthouse on top of the house, or stuck the regular roof on the tower. It's a cute concept, but none of the alternate arrangements really look better than the default one, and all the pin connections at the base make it very wobbly and unstable if you have to move it.

Decided to do some prep before I get to work this coming week. About 4700 pieces. Big ol' pile o' bags.

Man, Ninjago City is really cool but I feel like displaying it anywhere but in the middle of the room in a glass box like some crown jewels just wouldn't be doing it justice.

Quick poll, what is the most satisfying element for people? Mine is tiles. I don't get people saying all the tiles on the city modular are tedious, that sounds immensely satisfying. Most irksome is stacking 1x1 elements and making sure they're all flush.

I want the Ninjago city so badly, but when I told my wife the cost she laughed at me. I need to put up shelves anyway before I could even start to have enough space to display it. So no rush.

Lizard Combatant posted:Quick poll, what is the most satisfying element for people? Meshing gear elements. Building the Batwing, there were all these interlocking Technic pieces that I wasn't clear on what they did toward the end, and it was satisfying to find a mechanism in the build I wasn't aware of. Most annoying is round stickers with a hole in the middle, or stickers for 1x1 pieces. So tough to get those on right. Regarding stacking 1x1 elements, I just smoosh the side of them against a flat surface like my desk or a glass tabletop to make sure they're flush.

Lizard Combatant posted:Quick poll, what is the most satisfying element for people? I find tiles very satisfying, too. I think it is because on a subconscious level it is completion. When you place the tile, that is it. Nothing else goes there so you have finished building some area/spot/whatever. The problem with Ninjago city is step 2 you lay over 200 1x2 matching plates in a row. And you have to be precise because they aren't all in rows. They are mainly in rows but there are just enough at different angles that you have to pay attention. And it doesn't even look that great. It would have looked much better with 1x8 tiles or even bigger ones. When I look at it I see 1/2 the floor covered with lettering because at that size every single one has the lettering and it is very apparent when viewed from fairly close. I know the build is going to get much better but that part was terrible. There has to be a better way than what they used. Only thing I can think of for why they did this is bumping the piece count and having uniform size "water" pieces. It doesn't look like water, though. it's ineffective, in my opinion. You can see all the lettering on the tiles here. It looks even worse in person.

2 things: I was talking to a very nice british gentleman and his daughter in line at Lego store before Ninjago City doors opened. He seemed to think they do a new "train" every 3 or so years. Does that jive? Will we get a new train some day soon? 2: He mentioned some modular creator set or something where it was a 3 in 1 but there were alternate instructions on Lego's site for a Vintage BMW (or something like that?) Anyone know anything about that?

Just noticing that the Rogue 1 AT-ST is down to around $30 at some places and will probably be gone soon. Great set if the AT-ST is your thing. I really like it. Plus if the last AT-AT is any indication prices will shoot through the roof once it's gone. So now is probbably the prime time to grab it if you've been sitting on it.

I'm having a really hard time deciding whether or not I'm going to go for the UCS Snowspeeder or Ninjago City for my next big set. On one hand, I actively collect Lego Star Wars crap, the snowspeeder is one of my favorite SW machines, it's a really good looking set for the most part, and I have a spot on my shelf just begging to have it in there. On the other hand, Ninjago city straight up looks amazing and like one of the funnest builds ever, while the snowspeeder seems like it would be a little dull on the build front. NC also costs $100 more (but is defiantly a better value) and I have no idea whre the hell I'd even put it... In the end I'll probably get them both and just have NC as one of my few oddball sets. Probably leaning towards getting the SS first and the city sometime early next year but drat that is a tough choice.

How forbidden is it to talk about off-brand building block stuff in this thread? Because Mega Construx released licensed minifigures of an 'Aliens' xenomorph and a Colonial Marine and they're a hoot.

I enjoyed all the techniques they use to get the angles of the wings right and where they meet the nose piece. Yeah, you’re building two wings that are mirrors of each other, but it’s mostly big plates which I find satisfying.
