Ash: You sell rocks?
Flint: Pewter City souveneirs, you want to buy some?
My copy arrived yesterday and I got to play two scenarios with my buddy and his wife, and god drat what a fun game.

However, my buddy is really weird about card organization on the table when it comes to playing board games. He absolutely refuses to do what the game suggests and put his discards to the left of his character card, lost cards to the right, and active effects above. He just puts his cards wherever the gently caress and insists that it's fine because he knows which ones are discard, lost, active, etc. I am constantly pissed because I can't tell what his state is at any given time because I don't know which cards in front of him belong to which of his imaginary piles.

How do I get him to just do what the loving game says to do with the cards? :argh:

Mine was delivered today. Having seen the box in pictures and videos and knowing it weighed 22 lbs, I still wasn't prepared for how hilariously enormous this thing is. I'm already in love :swoon:

Oozes, imps and vipers just means you spend a ton of time poisoned, and the oozes just jam every path up with ludicrous hp. This is at character level 4-5, the oozes split once and you're looking at 8 monsters that hit for 3 each without poison being in, which just wipes you.

As far as I can tell, Scenario 72 is pretty much regarded as the most difficult scenario in the game. We failed, but the gist of what we did with a three-person party of Eclipse, Sun, and the Spellweaver, was We blitzed the snakes and imps first, and then turned towards the trees. I think you really, really need multiple AoE characters to pull that one off. When we lost it was because we ran into a horrific sequence of Split->Heal->Split->Heal that just generated too many enemies for us to mow down.

The last go, of I think 4 in total I ended with 6 curses because we had 2 imps in range on both of us getting their power that drops curses, for 2 turns in a row. And spears and squid just can't deal with shield well at all. If we killed the trash then we'd be looking at an elite ooze and 4-5 regulars by the time all the garbage was down. This time we literally had the trees unable to spawn because we had all 10 oozes out. When you have 7 oozes all attacking it doesn't matter what modifiers on their attacks they have.

That scenario is definitely rough. Our solution was to kite and ignore the oozes until last. Kill a tree ASAP then knock down the other monsters. Oozes can’t spawn more after there are 10 on the board, but they keep taking damage when they try to split.

Oh right. That scenario. gently caress that scenario.

One of only two losses we've ever had. We were too dispirited to go back to it for a rematch yet. That said, we did get most of the objectives down, it's just that oozes are the worst. And a logistical nightmare, too.

Enemy AI chat:
Summoning enemies are one of my biggest problems with this game. If an enemy flips a summon action at the start of an encounter it can be a lot of new HPs and damage to deal with. It’s an extremely variable difficulty for the summoning monsters. The summons are all on reshuffle actions too so you have a fair chance of getting two summons in a row.

Yeah if you run into some oozethey can do that at the start of an encounter and you're in for a hell of a time.

Oh poo poo we lost scenario 1!

Cragheart, Tinker, Scoundrel.

Scoundrel ran out of cards early by frankly playing bad. I (Cragheart) got screwed on cards early on. Tinker played the best but focused too much on healing instead of damage.

We will do better next time. :)

You gotta find the rhythm between holding back and going all out. Also knowing your decks helps a lot. If someone goes out real early it can be really tough.

"Carbons? Purge? What are you talking about?!"

It came...

I was up until like midnight punching cardboard with my wife. Hoping to get it to the table tonight. Got a 7 chamber accordion folio thing for map tiles and most of them fit in there pretty well (with the exception of the giant T-shaped pieces) although I can't really close it anymore. But they're there and pretty well organized, should hold me over until I decide to spring for the BT.

Does the video do a good job of teaching new players? I can't learn a game unless I dig through the book myself but I'm wondering if the video's been helpful to get other people up to speed.

One big lesson about raising kids (especially as they get to teenager status) is to never ask a question you really don't want to hear the answer to.

Applies to manchildren, too, turns out!

Just so you're prepared -- you cannot fit 100% of the game back in the box with the BT organizer, so hang onto that accordion folio. I got a decent-looking one with a closable flap and it sits on the shelf next to the box. The BT instructions call for carefully arranging all the tiles into a tray, which is tedious and unsearchable. Instead, I use that tray to hold all the stickers, the party pad, the elemental tile, health/xp dials, the giant boss monster standee, and the 4 boxes of my current party.

Yeah, in the first edition there were 10 of one monster (Vermling Scout?); now there's 6 of that one. It was probably $$$ to change the die cut pattern so they left it alone and just changed the printing.
