Just finished the Devastation of Baal. It was alright, the more frenzied Blood Angels kinda ruined the immersion a little, but overall it was lots of action and most importantly, it took place in the more current timeline.

So far I've read:

The Emperor's Legion
Dark Imperium
Devastation of Baal

What, if anything, is available to read in the current timeline, or leading up to it? Are there any books covering the Indomitus Crusade, the current fall of Cadia? I believe there is a short story book I haven't grabbed yet, but any other actual novels? No spoilers, just book names and maybe a summary.

I've asked before but I think this is it. With the exception of some of the actual game fluff books which appear to be out of print now because they lead up to the release of 8th edition which is the dumbest loving thing ever.

Pretty much all Recent books take place during the current timeline.

Even better, it's multiple perspectives in dynamic campaigns. BFG:A 2 will be great.

The game plays itself, but it never tells you it can do so. Once you figured out all of the automation opportunities (right click skills to autocast), it's just a case of lining up ramming speed manoeuvres.

Translation on part a: you play as everyone and you change the story depending how well you do?

Translation on part b: I watched your lp. I am remembering how well that worked out on you.

I’ve never felt so bad at video games as I did while playing Gothic War. The game was excellent and they did a great job catching the spirit of Warhammer, but man, I was by far the worst admiral the Imperium had the misfortune of promoting.

With all due respect, I find this very difficult to believe.

I don't think the former will be true. I think it'll be Dark Crusade style, but no information clarifying this has been released. Also: the LP was on hard too :smuggo:

Well, Necrons are in, so you better have a creative idea on what constitutes 'fun', or the devs have to severely nerf them.

Necrons are great, but hardly unbeatable in standard BFG. The main issue is that you have to completely change how you fight them.

Unless you’re Eldar, in which case they delete all your Escorts round 1, then you lose.

Its been really cool watching the quality go up and up each video, Im guessing he has backgrounds sorted enough where hes dropping the filter? thats kinda a shame i kinda dug it.

Yeah I haven't watched all of the Helsreach videos yet but I kinda preferred the sketch-style filter, at least for the short story format.

What time is it?
I am pretty sure he is playing around with different styles, not that he has decided firmly to change the way he does the videos. One of the recent ones had a lot of color, this one was mostly without filters, but there were some really fuzzy backgrounds with the two named soldiers at the start. He may have wanted more visual clarity for an episode dealing mostly with decoding Oberon.

If the Helsreach combat scenes were animated like the death of hope fanfilm it would be the best 40k video ever. Even so the non combat cinematography is exceptional.

Just finished Praetorian of Dorn and I wanna check: did that book feel like a hell of a slog to get through for anyone else? I love both the Alpha Legion and Imperial Fists but hooboy reading that thing felt like a chore.

There was an entire segment where this character, who I still have no idea what they did, was infiltrating this cave hangar thing for some purpose midway through the book, then it turns out they had been buried for like 100 years. It just seemed so loving ridiculous and out of place that I zoned out, next thing I know, Dorn has teleported into a teleport-proof sphere and is fighting a battle ala BlastCorp against Alpharius.

I decided to peace out of Heresy books for a while after that and dived directly into Emperor's Legion. This may have been a mistake as a good chunk of the first half of the book so far has revolved around attempts to get a council vote on something that isn't really explained much until just before it happens. Thankfully some Big poo poo has just started to go down at just about the halfway point. I feel like this book is a roller coaster which spends half of its length slowly climbing the lift hill before immediately launching to full speed.

I"m listening to the new Horus Heresy Burden of Loyalty audiobook, and I'm really enjoying the long form novellas in it, kinda neat to see under-explored sides of the conflict.

It was, but supposedly the next book won't be that far behind. Compared to the wait between Salvation's Reach and Warmaster, anyway, I think? Which isn't saying all that much.

On an unrelated note, I finished Descent of Angels the other day and it turned out to be as aggressively mediocre as most everyone had said! In need of something else to read while on the loo, I'm tackling Battle for the Abyss next. (Don't worry, I bought that one Humble Bundle last year and ended up with all of these books whether I wanted them or not. :shobon:)

This does seem likely. On the upside, the very first page contains the phrase “innumerate, petty meanderings”, which I shall choose to interpret as a sign of immense self-awareness on the author’s part.

So, I’m a little behind the times and am just getting around to finishing Black Legion. I’m now looking ahead to my next book and am wondering... have any of you tried Shroud of Night yet? I feel like a few goons read it and said it wasn’t awful. It is a toss up between that and Dark Imperium for me.

I’ve only ever read books by Abnett, ABD or Chris Wright and, now that that well has run dry, I am a bit worried that I’m about to enter the not-so-good side of black library writing :/

I liked Shroud of Night and I'm looking forward to a sequel. it's not ADB or Abnett, but by BL standards it's very good.

And there, till Christ call forth the dead,
In silence let him lie:
No need to waste the foolish tear,
Or heave the windy sigh:
The man had killed the thing he loved,
And so he had to die.
Is the idea of Genestealers infiltrating society long before the main Tyranid horde arrives still a thing in canon?

Was reading some old school stuff and reflecting its much more interesting than the unstoppable bug swarm version of Tyranid invasions.
