I could recommend a bunch but I don't think any of them make it over to you. Next time you happen to find yourself in the US, try some Founders Breakfast Stout (8%) or Bell's Expedition Stout (10%) (if you hang on to it for a year, it gets even better). Hopslam (10%) is one of my favs but only comes out in January, and has already disappeared from the shelves.

There are definitely a lot of high-ABV beers which are boozy and kinda crappy, just high ABV to have a big number, similar to how there are a bunch of overhopped IPAs just to have a big IBU number, but there are enough breweries that care about flavor who do it right that counting them out entirely is never a good idea.

What's really fun is brewing your own heavy beers, it turns brewing in to a real challenge, but when you get it right it's so rewarding. A friend and made a mix a few years ago that I can't even categorize but ended up around 15%. It was sort of a stout, sort of a porter, heavy on the chocolate malts, and a bit boozy at bottling but that aged out very well.

I used to think that after 3 beers basically any beer would do. But once, I visited US and just wanted some beer to have by the time I get back home ( :canada:) and the only thing they had in that store was budweiser. I had Bud Light before in my life, which was piss but drinkable, so surely Budweiser red cant be too bad. It was. The amount is irrelevant. It is the most awful thing that I ever tasted that wants to pass as beer. Never again.

Sours are great! The Kriek (= cherry) is pretty great if you like a fruity taste to your beer - it's still sour, though, not sweet. 10 years back, before the beer hype in the States, I used to urge American collegues to try some but they couldn't get their head around the idea of sour beer. Score extra points with beer hipsters and refer to them as Lambiek or Geuze, because that's what they're based on.

Beerchat: About 5 minutes by foot from my workplace is a nice pub having great selection of craft beers. Some time ago two of my very good friends started working there, and the owners are pretty great and chill people to hang out with. They have their own bitter, lager, pils and stout, while also serving pretty good selection from local microbreweries. Few days ago I was talked into drinking IPA with beet juice, it was... not awful I guess? Idk, I'm not a fan of IPAs while it's freezing cold outside. They also have two different brands of homemade scotch, which are decent.

As for the actual content, I've lost all of the patience for the lack of basic troubleshooting skills by some of the coworkers. Today I was witnessing a coworker having issues with setting Office 365 email account in outlook. Using a local account, everything works perfect, but as soon as you try to set up outlook on domain account, it just says "Encrypted connection to MS Exchange is unavailable". I pointed him towards Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365, but it didn't really help, it would set up a profile, but then throw out "Connection to MS Exchange is unavailable", and he kept spinning in circles. Granted, this seems like a peculiar problem, but it still took me less than 15 minutes of googling to solve it.

If anyone runs into the same issue, there were changes in how windows credential manager works, the fix is to navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Protect\Providers\df9d8cd0-1501-11d1-8c7a-00c04fc297eb] and make a DWORD named ProtectionPolicy with a value of 1.

Now, I probably shouldn't be mad at a coworker for wasting my time, and I normally wouldn't for an issue like this, if it wasn't for a problem that happened yesterday. A client called him, they are video production shop, and their render farm was unreachable over network. He was there for 4 hours, and was calling me every 15 minutes, while I was guiding him through basic steps. Check the switches. Check the cables. Disconnect everything from switches, connect one by one thing. Both switches in the main rack work fine. Rest of the network works fine. Eventually, I went there to help him.

I take a look at the back of two racks with render machines, and all cables lead to a rack different than one in which above stated two switches are. I open it, and sure enough, there is a dead switch there. "I didn't see it". Yeah, well gently caress you, if you opened the bloody door, maybe you would have.

Once people were hitting the theoretical 100's breweries realized they needed something to get you started. Something you could drink more than one of and still not be drunk. This started the Session Beer era. Milds, low abv IPAs (which you could argue are just pales), and berlinerweisse sprang up everywhere! Now we are getting into sort of a new era, where breweries are branching out and trying new flavors and additions as well as going back to older styles and methods. I am really hoping we can bring back the ESB on cask, my favorite beer style of all time.

Given the kind of obsession some people have with hops, it wouldn't shock me if they found a way to use alcohol as an emulsifier for pure hop oil in a beer format.

So I'm having a fun day. I'm working from home, but I also am having some problems with my basement sump pump, and I have people coming to visit, and a ton of furniture arrived this morning.

I'm currently context switching between these three tasks all morning:

1) migrating some content between databases
2) using my shop vac to drain my sump well
3) assemble a piece of furniture

The sump takes about 1/2 hour to fill, the migration commands take about 40 minutes, so I'm doing stations and switching between each. Hopefully there's no major database issues so my basement doesn't flood.

At home I regularly use 12-14GB with a game open and 15ish tabs of chrome open. I think uBlock origin causes memory to balloon.

Is it verified that it can't take more than 16GB? A lot of the time the spec sheets only test up to a certain amount, or only reflect the options that the machines are available with from the factory.

No, I was searching for ram options just after I posted that, and apparently Crucial makes a 2x16GB kit that works in the W550s, so I guess the 16GB max thing was from when the machine was released.
