The drastic change in the annunciation of key and well established devices was really jarring. Their voice direction in my opinion feels kinda flat compared to how the cast had rounded into shape by the end of the TV dub.

It isn't helped by the god awful video quality which is true, but I think the dub has issues it didn't need to have given they got the entire cast to do it.

yeah, don't get me wrong, it's absolutely not a Cowboy Bebop/Baccano! quality dub, but honestly i feel like the TV dub is a little shonky in parts too. both movie and TV dubs are pretty much flawed but serviceable, imo, and are good to have for if i wanna rewatch eva while doing laundry or something.

e: the rebuild dubs are loving amazing but that's not a surprise, Funi pretty consistently does good work if they have a reason to (and sometimes if they don't- I was kind of loving stunned at how good the Future Diary dub was, they put way more effort in than that show arguably needed)

Quick Q: Does anyone know if the original Usenet boards for EVA are still up? Some of them are available after the Google purchase, but some old Usenet boards are apparently gone forever. I'm trying to find the earliest discussion online about the show and figure that's a good place to start.

I tried looking myself over at Google Groups but didn't find anything contemporary.

That's really loving sorry if true. Look, EoE had a bad dub. So what? Really, watching EoE is given yet another layer of infamy due to the dub. Want to watch a mind warp of a movie? Watch the sub. Wanna watch some hilariously bad dubbing decisions? Watch the dub. There's value in both, dammit.

I haven't seen the EoE dub but is that the one where they added all kinds of stupid sound effects and confuse a person slapping someone for a gunshot etc?

I know sometimes a word in Japanese doesn't have a direct version in English but don't try mixing poo poo up like some bad Abridged parody.

Yeah, it's definitely that one. I don't mind the dub itself, but the added SFX -- like that incredibly cartoony 'splortch' they use like a dozen times -- are horrendous.

the EoE dub replacing sound effects is vastly overstated, its like one or two brief moments in the whole movie.

Also its kind of unwarranted, since apparently part of the reason they did it was because Gainax were dicks and gave them a partially flattened audio track instead of a real multitrack master for D&R and EoE, so they literally had to rebuild parts of the SFX track from scratch.

The main one is when Misato says, "No offence taken." in response to the soldier telling Shinji that [killing him] is "nothing personal." She shoots him in the head from his jaw, and there's a really dumb splotchy sound effect.

The others I can't list off off the top of my head, except for "Hit em again".

I'd agree that the sound effects changes in EoE aren't as big a deal as they're usually made out to be, IMO, even moreso if they really weren't given a proper multitrack master to work with.

The TV series dub on the other hand is pretty questionable. I grew up with the Eva dub and I will probably always associate those voices with its characters, but it really does the show a disservice with a lot of terrible corny line readings (especially in the early episodes), and some outright mistranslations (which aren't really helpful in a show that's already known as being "confusing"). Some characters having their voice actors replaced over the course of the series also doesn't help.

It's the same sound again when the Unit 6/Reiface hybrids explode while impaling themselves iirc.

I think in terms of casting all the main characters nailed it. A lot of lines could use another take, but the voices usually line up with the character.

Allison Keith started off a bit high and squeaky, but she improved dramatically over the series, to the point that she sounds more 'correct' to me than Kotono Mitsuishi. Although that's at least partially due to hearing the dub first.

All of the major characters were good to great, even Spike Spencer since his voice actually fit the character (unlike in Nadesico). The secondary and bit characters, on the other hand, could be rather goofy. I'm looking at you, Kensuke and the SEELE council.

I was kind of astounded the first time I watched Evangelion in Japanese and heard Kensuke's original voice. It gave me a completely different impression of him as a character, much more serious and grounded (even jaded maybe?) in spite of his overexcitable personality. The dub Kensuke voice is glorious in its corniness, though, and is admittedly a lot of fun to mimic.

You could probably play around with the search conditions more or just read those boards in the 1995-1997 range to find more/different stuff, but those links should get you to the oldest possible discussion. Google sure doesn't make it easy.

What I can find online suggests Matt Greenfield did Unit 01's roars, though I'm not seeing anything particularly definitive (Probably should just check the credits on the DVD's myself later).

Changing it for the dub is fine, though it should have been a distorted version of Amanda Winn-Lee or whoever they had playing Yui (Apparently in the TV dub it was someone else) IMO. The Japanese version has Megumi Hayashibara doing Rei, Yui, and a heavily distorted version of her voice is even used for Unit 01, which is some nice consistency.

I think Eva-01's roars were given to them on the same audio track as the other character voices, so they had to be re-recorded for the dub.
