it's funny because on like their first or second album they had a song that was about the one ring in lotr and it's really cheesy

I found a song. I didn’t want to like it but by the time I realized it’s just easy going hard rock/metal with a fun theme and fun guitar leads I couldn’t say no. They found my happy music place and channel some Thin Lizzy in a way I never hear elsewhere.

Gygax - Pure Hearts

I've been really digging this album since I discovered it like a week ago. A big improvement from their debut, for sure.

Night Flight Orchestra is goddamn great too, seconding il_cornuto's recommendation.

EDIT: Also if you wanna hear Thin Lizzy channeling, I trust you've heard this song:

(yes that's Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth (no he doesn't actually sing in the song))

My personal favorite for Thin Lizzy channeling is Corsair. Their two full length albums are basically prog-Lizzy.

Jailbreak (just skip the song if it bothers you so much)
Bad Reputation
Black Rose
Thunder and Lightning if you want to hear them with NWOBHM influence

i love all of their albums, but the best studio albums would be fighting, jailbreak and johnny the fox. but honestly their best album is thunder and lighting, a live from 1983. it's as good as no sleep till hammersmith

It’s just one of those songs that has been thoroughly ruined by classic rock radio to the point where it’s hard to hear anything appealing about it. I’ve spent too much time near carpenters so I’ve heard it endlessly.

Sadly, I have the same reaction to that song as I would to We Didn’t Start the Fire or Bad Company.

Can anyone recommend me some more stuff like Meth Drinker? Doesn't have to be sludge specifically but I have a hard time finding bands as purely loving negative as they are (the only ones that come close are Iron Monkey and Primitive Man)

as far as sludge goes these are prob. the most nihilistic bands that come to mind:

eyehategod (naturally): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gS5F9YLGvvs
toadliquor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsPorTyaI8c
grief: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr3sGU6Bao0
fleshpress: https://fleshpress.bandcamp.com/track/golden-owl
corrupted: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2yHEAXv7uU
dystopia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1AIfCo_elGk
buzzoven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeJHcjMEoTk

i guess out of those, toadliquor are the only ones not considered a "classic" band which is a loving shame since they're just as good as the rest. listening to that is like getting sucked into a vortex of abuse and addiction.

warning is like, dear diary doom lol. good band though!

i get to see them twice within a month and i'm psyched as hell. this will be my 8th and 9th time i think?

what do you feel that's wrong with them? they have a relatively diverse output, from slow, nihilistic dirge to borderline blues rock to straight up hardcore. and they're a lot more fun live than you'd expect, really charismatic dudes and they've always had really great live sound.

ah, they don't really do that early stuff anymore. i only linked it because the dude was asking for super nihilistic stuff.

here's some hardcore:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VepTkVmh-WA

here's some blues rock:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poQgKvVOZGY

and here's some borderline NOLA jazz through a sludge filter:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJVD3lv6W-Q

those are all pretty recent stuff, which i think they concentrate on live with some old, fun hardcore or bluesy stuff added in. go see them, you won't be dissapointed

hah, that would be a dream line up.

about 10 years ago buzzoven was supposed to reform and play in london, we naturally bought tix and booked flights and hotels. two days before the show they canceled because kirk relapsed or went into psychosis or w/e. we ended up just sitting in a pub drinking for 4 days. they've reformed again now, but after watching a few live videos i probably wouldn't travel to see them anymore.

Man, missed Thin Lizzy talk. :(

Everything they did is amazing - even the Jailbreak album which has some absolute stunners. My personal faves are Johnny the Fox because of FOOLS GOLD. And then Renegades which is just chock full of greatness, Renegade, No One Told Him and The Pressure Will Blow which has the signature dual guitar harmonies ripping ya in the start.

I HATE that they are only known for Jailbreak, Boys Are Back in Town and maybe Whiskey in the Jar. :( Phil Lynott was a god.
