Welcome to the physical media thread! This will be the defacto thread for discussion of all types of physical home media from DVD to UHD and beyond. Why would I buy a stupid disc when I could just stream it? To a lot of people the biggest answer is “streaming speeds.” ISPs can charge ludicrous amounts of money for Internet and speeds, resulting in stuttering and low-quality presentations of your favorite media. Streaming as a platform in general also results in compression which reduces the audio and video quality of the media. When you buy physical media, the only limitation on these is the TV and sound system you own. What's the difference between Blu-ray and UHD? UHD discs are the new step-up in physical media quality. While blu-ray will give you a 1080p presentation, UHD allows for a stunning 4K presentation. The largest benefit UHD discs have over blu-rays, however, is HDR. What's HDR? If you have a 4k TV that supports HDR (High Dynamic Range), it allows for a wider contrast ratio as well as a wider color gamut. This results in your TV being able to display supported media closer to the original scan of the film, which is mutes these qualities in lesser resolutions. For more information, here's a very detailed article by CNET explaining it. Hey, I want to buy some physical media but I hate that mainstream superhero poo poo, is there anything for me? Egbert Souse posted:A quick guide to boutique labels... Useful links Blu-ray.com- A great resource for checking quality of titles. Some early reviews when the format was new are wrong/outdated, but the reviewers usually go into their picture and audio reviews. Also a great place to keep track of your collection online. DVD Beaver- Reviews and screenshots comparing various older formats to new releases. High Def Digest- More reviews and screenshots Real or Fake 4k- A site that lets you know if the scan your UHD disc was filmed in 4k or upconverted. This is not the end-all-be-all quality tester, but this website also shows which UHD titles support HDR. It still blows my loving mind that Blu-Ray has been a format for literally 12 years now and there are people who don't know what it is/still haven't upgraded to a Blu-Ray player/still buy DVDs. Like, I understand old people not being able to tell the difference between SD and HD (their eyes are loving broken), but still. Blu-Ray players are cheap as gently caress. Blu-Rays themselves are cheap as gently caress. You can probably get a standalone Blu-Ray player and a couple of your favorite movies on Blu-Ray for $50 or maybe a little more than that. You don't need an expensive game console to play them or anything like that. If you're still buying physical media in 2018, it makes no sense to buy a movie on DVD over Blu-Ray at this point, but people are still doing it I was asking about jumping on the UHD bandwagon recently in the last thread, and with the adoption rate of Blu-Ray, it makes sense why UHD would take forever to catch on. Are there TVs being sold with built-in Blu-Ray players like those older TVs with built-in DVD players? Rageaholic fucked around with this message at 10:06 on Apr 4, 2018 |

I just dumped my old Nightmare on Elm St and Friday the 13th DVD sets because I bought the Blu ray sets. At a fraction of the price of what the DVDs cost 10 years ago too. BTW Wal Mart has the new F13 blu ray set on the shelves for $29.99 if anyone missed the older one that's going for a couple hundred dollars now.

Well, part of that was probably how overpriced Disney/Marvel/Star Wars stuff always tends to be when its first released. Most normal movies you can find for 17.99 or maybe 22.99 max, but of course for Star Wars they want 27.99 and that price isn't dropping for months. I like still having the option to grab a cheap DVD because I love old horror movies and westerns, so there are tons of those that haven't made their way to blu ray yet but they're still perfectly watchable on DVD.

I don't think it's that odd when people throw away those basic blue cases that every blu ray comes in, I get that. But if you're spending money on the stuff that's designed more for collectors(Criterion, steelbooks, nicer box sets) then I don't understand why you wouldn't want to have them on a nice little shelf in your living room.

I've been taking all the paper and disks out of the case, and throwing the case away. I get these sleeves from Amazon, and put them in a box (also from Amazon). I finished my DVD collection, and just kept going from there. I've long since run out of room to display all of them. (Comparison of space saved by doing just the MCU films.)

Half the appeal of having a nice movie collection for me is that I can go over the shelf and look at everything and choose something to watch that fits whatever mood I'm in at the moment. If they were all just stuffed in a box it'd be much less practical and satisfying to do that.

I don't need the DVDs anymore, and as soon as I can get enough store space, the blurays will be the same. The DVDs are also already starting to suffer disk rot, and I couldn't rip a few of them that have been in the cases for years prior to that.
