If there isn't a 100-foot tall The Rock in that movie they're wasting everyone's time. Hopefully they're just doing a good job of keeping it out of the ads.

I mean there’s a lot of sexist stuff from Monty Python that looks even worse in our current time, so it’s not that surprising.

My favorite Michaels! I heard about this a while back, but I'd completely forgotten about it in the meantime. Looks like it could be good, but I'll watch Michael Shannon be a creepy weirdo in just about anything.

We need a new 1984 movie because the John Hurt movie did not have the Tiny Train World scene.

The legendary 20th Century novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, written by Eric Arthur Blair, already received the best movie adaptation possible on this planet, it's called Nineteen Eighty-Four and it was released in 1984. I assert this because when my theater did a special screening of it last year for 500+ people, no fewer than 3 middle-aged women walked out and scolded us for screening 'torture porn'.

I've seen the first 5 episodes and she's still campy, she just isn't "big" with it. Yet. I'm mixed about where the show will go, but I'm sold on her and the rest of the cast. It helps that the entire thing has a Prometheus/The Martian kind of aesthetic.

Rageaholic Monkey posted:What, am I supposed to just ignore the fact that he sexually abuses women for the rest of my life and keep seeing his movies just because he's a movie star? I dunno, man, like who gives a gently caress? I absolutely believe in following your own personal code, and if boycotting Franco is the centerpiece of that code then more power to you. But the world is full of tragedy...and to address said in even the most minute ways requires more than grandstanding. To be honest, I thought he was pretty drat good in The Deuce, a show that does its best to chronicle the moral complexity of exploitation (and collective complicity therein), and considering that show wouldn't exist without his contribution I'm willing to open myself up to the possibility that human interactions are often complex, messy, and morally ambiguous...which in turn reflects on media spectacle and commodity culture. I just don't see hashtag activism serving as a solution to systemic issues of exploitation.

sorry, had to cut this up because uhBeanpolePeckerwood posted:... boycotting Franco is the centerpiece ... James Franco is nobody's centerpiece. He's pretty good in the right roles but he's not at all an auteur and in fact I'm kindof annoyed that he shits up the American canon with his weak adaptations. BeanpolePeckerwood posted:that show wouldn't exist without his contribution Fair, and maybe true. It is a good show but I'll give Maggie Gyllenhaal & David Simon some credit too; I doubt Franco has more pull than those two together (especially with HBO wtf, Simon is their darling). Krankenstyle posted:sorry, had to cut this up because uh Yeah, I totally agree about his terrible directorial work. I think he's a decent actor here and there and he seems to want to be involved in interesting projects (Howl, Milk, 127 Hours, Spring Breakers etc)...but just as often or more I don't think it works out. I think his contribution to The Deuce is significant, both in terms of money and performance. Gyllenhaal is absolutely unbeatable in that show, and she is also involved in production but to a lesser degree. Krankenstyle posted:

I have to admit I like the "I've got a really good feeling about this!" line, it's a great way to do a callback to an iconic line but also show how different the character is at this point in his life and hint that he's going to experience some hosed up stuff that'll change his views about life sometime soon. A whole bunch of the other lines ("If you come with us, you're in this life for good") seem really forced and bad.
