UBI is bad for the following reasons:
  • It's yet another welfare program to band-aid capitalism. Under a capitalist system, it will be systematically attacked just like all welfare programs.
  • Under a capitalist system, UBI will be rendered moot. Monopolists and rentiers will extract all the extra income for themselves by raising prices accordingly. Price fixing as an attempt to counteract this force will ultimately fail as it always has under a capitalist system.
  • A better solution is to distribute wealth more evenly in the first place instead of redistribution.
  • Any long term solution requires eliminating capitalist hierarchies.
  • A class of people that work and a class of people that don't work creates divisiveness. Everyone should share in the burden of work necessary for society. With sufficient automation, this can still mean a significantly reduced work week.

The issue with this is that some jobs require more education and work than others. Fewer people may want to do a job that takes 8 years of higher education that requires them to work 50+ hours a week if they get paid as much as a high school dropout who works 35 hours per week.

Maybe I'm totally misunderstanding, but what's to stop me selling my guaranteed social benefit apt in downtown TO if the market gets overblown enough? Or taking it and making it into an airbnb?

Laws probably. But basically, the idea is to take welfare economics to its logical conclusion: government intervention to solve a market failure and increase distributive efficiency (Abba Lerner). You can't solve a market failure through market rationalism. In this sense, the government bypasses market distribution for political distribution and a rational way to do that is to account for social needs per social unit.
In other words, a person needs housing, not rent assistance, food instead of food coupons, medical care at the point of need instead of health insurance support. A good way to do that is through material balances planning or input-output planning. You can do that with a dual track system of consumer goods left to the market and social goods left to planning and that way you bypass the market to solve market caused problems.

that's because there's other things that use the same training but pay a lot more, not because potential teachers are becoming janitors instead

I think the issue isn't so much that they pay "less," but rather that they don't pay enough to live an enjoyable, low-stress lifestyle.

edit: Also teachers currently have to deal with a bunch of unnecessary bullshit, like doing unpaid work preparing lesson plans or having to pay for their own school supplies.

I'll just say I disagree with the core argument, as I believe that if someone does significantly more work than someone else but doesn't get paid more, that they will become jealous.

It's entirely possible if we just jail like ... 500-1000 people like this, a lot of society's problems just solve themselves. How many people have >$100,000,000 in wealth?

I'd give them the working alone and the meetings (meetings suck so bad), but lol that 20 hours of miscellaneous that would get any normal wage slave fired if they did that stuff on the clock.
