Seals are intact, and they were lubricated before being sold.

May I ask where you got them? I don't see Japanese eyedroppers offered for sale in restored, usable condition often - certainly not on Yahoo Japan, which is where I get all of mine.

There's a seller in Alberta, Canada that puts up a couple of vintage Japanese pens 2-3 times a year. This is the seller: https://www.ebay.ca/usr/jondole54?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2754 I don't know where or how he's getting them, but he posts some gorgeous, gorgeous stuff.

This is the seller: https://www.ebay.ca/usr/jondole54?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2754 Oh hey that is some good stuff and some good prices. Do note that the JIS mark on the Niole nib dates it to 1955 or after, though many prewar pens turn up with postwar nibs. I'd also expect a NOS 1940s pen to have the wartime government price control tag on it (a circle with a 公 in it) but I don't know if they appeared on every pen. Eyedroppers with similar designs were produced up to the mid-90s so it's hard to put definitive dates on things.

Thanks for the info. To be honest, the date doesn't really matter that much to me. The condition of the pens is fantastic and I paid an absurdly low price. Oh, and a better pic of the Niole because my new camera *also* showed up today.

That sure is a nice pen! I know the date isn't hugely important to a user but it does bug me that the seller seems to list everything as 30s-40s when a few quick searches will show that that estimate is way off. The JIS mark is a big hint, and another is price tags - before the war prices were in the single digits of Yen, and after they were in the hundreds.

Cleaning out my 992's in anticipation for new inks... one of them seems to only fill up 3/4 of the way now and the knob is very loose. Not a huge problem, but it means more refilling, which I loath.

Goulet announced that they are getting a new commerce site next week, requiring everyone to reset their passwords, and that those who do it within the first week will get a special treat, which I assume will be a discount code. Hopefully the wish lists carry over well, but I may turn mine into a PDF anyway.

A heads-up to any British folks in here who bought a pen case from Musubi - you're gonna get hit for import tax. I just got a letter for £20 to be paid before they'll release it. I have no idea why because the Musubi notebooks don't have any taxes levelled on them.

kim jong-illin posted:A heads-up to any British folks in here who bought a pen case from Musubi - you're gonna get hit for import tax. UK customs can be... cavalier in what they'll impose duties on. I've checked this before and our books are classified as a 0% duty item: https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/trade-tariff/commodities/4820900000 but our pen cases are likely to be classified under this HS code which may incur a 3.7% duty: https://www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/trade-tariff/commodities/4202329010 I still don't see how 3.7% of the price comes anywhere close to 20 GBP, even including the package submission fee, but if you have details I'd love to hear them, so that we can advise other folks who come after. Unfortunately, not much we can do about the duty assessment. We can't honour requests to underdeclare package values or list them as gifts, either, both because that affects compensation in the event of loss/damage and also because we need to keep everything 100% aboveboard as a social enterprise. So far the worst duty assessment we've seen is Turkey, where our customer was required to submit screenshots of the product page on the website to prove how much it cost despite the invoice clearly stating the value.

Well, today my being "The Pen Guy" got me tasked with writing the names of the graduating students of the school I'm at on their diplomas! I've been practicing all afternoon with both my Music dip nib and the Lamy 1.5mm Italics nib I bought a while back for fun. While the Music nib produces some great line variation, my Lamy is much more consistent and has much better ink flow, so I've decided to go with it. I may post some samples in the next few days, but the admin told me that I can order whatever inks or pens I think I need. MB Mystery Black is something I already have and I think it will do the job, is there a Goon Certified Black Ink that I could get, though?

Seconding Aurora, it's my favorite black. Very wet so it flows like crazy, and it ends up super glossy. I'm not sure about its permanence characteristics. Is that important?

That being said, do you know what you're going to be writing on? And can you get some scraps or something? Because while all these work nicely enough on regular paper, I don't really know what I'd suggest if you're actually using vellum or something.

Kessel: Got my Musubi pen case and notebook today. Both are amazingly made. I'm glad you put a back flap behind the snap on the inside, I was worried about that when I saw the pictures but figured you had it sorted. I also see why you do the gift boxes for the books: shipping and customs did a little number on the package banging the DHL bag up a touch but the book and the case did fine. Great stitching and materials.

Had anyone ever made their own inserts for traveler journels with better paper? I'm thinking of trying to make some with the hp 32lb paper that's perfect for really wet pens, I have everything in my amazon cart but wanted to see if anyone else has tried it before?

The internal tab is indeed a tricky bit of case to make, but it ensures that the snap doesn't touch your pens, ever — we were pretty adamant about that. Yeah, that's part of the reason for the boxes, and also why we wrap the book and case separately in bubble wrap so they turn into little packages all their own. Was there damage on your box?

Well, I've had a hell of an up and down afternoon pen-wise. Got a slightly beat up vaccumatic (blue diamond in the black pearl stripe color) for $10 at the local antique fair. Figured even if the diaphragm was dead, it might be worth it to get it fixed. Then I take it home and clean it, and while doing so, the freaking barrel breaks in half about 3/4 of an inch above the section (edit: just put it back together and the break is exactly where the cap ends on the barrel, so I'm guessing cumulative lifetime sideways stress or something). Like, I'm rinsing the nib and suddenly I'm holding two pieces of barrel. Really clean break, so at first I thought it might be something that was held together with shellac or something, but not, it's just broken. Guess I'm glad it didn't happen in my bag/pocket/while writing something at my desk. So, I guess next step is selling the cap and getting my $10 back out of the pen, but the nib seems nice, and I'd LOVE to transplant it to something. Anyone have any idea what pen I can graft the nib onto? Google is not being terribly helpful. stealie72 fucked around with this message at 21:27 on Jun 2, 2018 |

Thankfully, Vacumatic nibs do fit a good range of modern pens, especially if you use pliers and a hammer.

Have been lusting after the Pelikan Stresemann for years, might finally pull the trigger soon... Does anyone here have one? Thoughts? I could get one for a decent price with the EF nib, which is usually my preference anyway, how are Pelikan's extra fines?

Do it. EF is also going up in price in the European market FYI so if you can get good a price then you're really in good shape. Just be aware Pelikan nibs are a bit inconsistent. Is this the 800 or 400?
