Thanks to whoever recommended that one isekai web novel with the reincarnated drill hair villain in ~prestige school~ or w/e... i think it was in here?

I mean the WN is nothing to write home about itself, the writing style is pretty repetitive, the story itself is too, and man does the author have an unhealthy fixation on sports events, but hey, what else are you gonna do in these 2 minute intervals at work where you have nothing to do except wait for someone else.

The reason i'm thankful tho, is that it introduced me to Franz Schubert's Ständchen, and man

I hadn't checked it the new reader, because I just read everything using Dynasty. I thought "it can't be that bad" but what the gently caress? LONG STRIP doesn't even load every image at once, anymore! :psyduck:

All is for the best, in this, the best of all possible worlds
You can set Mangadex back to (more or less) how it was before by hitting the gear icon button and setting Fit to Width, Long Strip, Preload 20 images. Then hide the sidebar and never touch it again.

There are a few extra options which might be useful at times, like Fit to Height and Max Container Width for those scanlators that have gigantic page scans. It's nice to have options. Unfortunately your initial impression is still kinda wonky.

I'm really not getting the hate on the new reader. The default look was a little off due to the sidebar, but that's easily hidden (as is the header) (edit: and is probably meant to be for best use, but it's visible so you can see that there are options and where the navigation buttons are if you prefer) and there's options to make it work in almost any way you want. I think it's the best reader I've ever used.

It's 100% unnecessary for a site where you generally want to look at manga, not have 20% of the window covered by even more buttons.

Anyway if you go to your user settings (the one where you change your password, not the three other settings buttons they have now), somewhere in there is a setting to switch the reader back to the old one. I believe they call it the legacy reader or something.

Incidentally, it would be a better reader if it let me have separate view options for mobile/pc. Long strip kinda sucks on a tablet (and it's probably hell on a phone).

It has an option to fit to width but cap the width to a set pixel count, which makes it better than 99% of readers out there.

I imagine that’s useful if you have the browser window fullscreened or maximized?

I’m not sure what I don’t like about it. I think it’s that it feels like it’s a separate window within the browser window, the way old versions of office used to insist on. Personally, I’m far happier with a bunch of images on a page.

I mean, this is what mine looks like after about a minute of looking at the options:

I'm weird in that I like clicking/swiping to change pages. Long strip is nice for a lot of the non-Japanese web stuff since they often like to use an infinite page style to begin with, but otherwise the action of going from one page to the next helps me actually absorb a page, instead of just reading the words and moving on.

That's a good point.

There are also a bunch of keyboard shortcuts listed under the reader settings, like pressing m to go to the index page for the manga.

whew this list: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/interest/2018-08-10/readers-pick-the-best-boys-love-manga-for-beginners/.135297

quote:

According to Nijimen readers, the boys-love manga best suited to new readers are:

1. The World's Greatest First Love: The Case of Ritsu Onodera by Shungiku Nakamura (available from SuBLime)
2. Classmates by Asumiko Nakamura (available soon from Seven Seas Entertainment)
3. I Hear the Sunspot by Yuki Fumino (available from One Peace Books)
4. Hitorijime My Hero by Memeco Arii (available soon from Kodansha Comics)
5. Seven Days: Monday-Thursday by Venio Tachibana and Rihito Takara (available from Digital Manga Publishing)
6. Does The Flower Blossom? by Shoko Hidaka (available from Digital Manga Publishing)
7. Blue Sky Complex by Kei Ichikawa (unlicensed)
8. Ten Count by Rihito Takarai (available from SuBLime)
9. Blue Morning by Shoko Hidaka (available from SuBLime)
10. Hana no Miyako de by Rihito Takarai (unlicensed)

I wouldn't recommend #1 to anyone much less someone new to BL, everything Nakamura writes is trash garbage. Hitorijime My Hero is cute but ehhhhh it's not that great? and probably not a very good beginner manga other than having an anime adaption and being pretty accessible. Could have worse picks I guess, it's still got a healthy dose of bad tropes but overall is kind of bland and mild. I generally love Shoko Hidaka but I never got past the first volume of Blue Morning because it starts with the MC raping his love interest so uh, not one I'd hand to someone to get them started. Also I love Ten Count but holy hell giving that to someone as a starter BL is like pushing them into the deep end of the pool.

Classmates, Sunspot, Seven Days (it's one of the first I read actually), Does the Flower Blossom?, Blue Sky Complex, and Hana no Miyako de (plus the related series) are all good recommendations at least.
