The author's probably just assuming the reader knows about the Lavender Scare and all the other bullshit he did to persecute gay people, but that is a bit... it's a bad look and could be done better.

Also this Roger Stone quote is incredible: "Roy was not gay. He was a man who liked having sex with men. Gays were weak, effeminate. He always seemed to have these young blond boys around. It just wasn't discussed. He was interested in power and access."

now that jake tapper has admitted the mistake in his fact-checking, I'm sure he'll be a little more humble and a little less combative about it, right?

Like Jesus, candy, and crackerjacks! Ice cream and cake and lots o'laffs!
Grandma, Grandpa, and Uncle Joe! Larry, Curly, and brother Moe!

paragraph has been edited and now reads:

quote:

“I never worked for a better man or a greater cause. … He sizzled up the American landscape like nobody before and nobody since,” Cohn said in his autobiography, which came out in 1988, two years after he died from AIDS as a man who denied to the end that he was gay, and a year after his avid protégé gave his first political speech and released The Art of the Deal, and nearly three decades before 62,984,825 people in this country voted the way that they did, putting into the Oval Office a president who on Sunday on Twitter railed yet again about a “Rigged Witch Hunt” and said Mueller “and his gang” “make Joseph McCarthy look like a baby,” trying to tar the special counsel with the disrepute of a man Trump’s most trusted adviser learned from and admired.

Funnily enough, there's an Angels in America scene where Pacino as Cohn describes this reasoning to his doctor after receiving his diagnosis. And it was extremely Trumpian.

notice that the failing WaPo only talks to one student

that one student is a writer for the campus conservative newspaper, and has repeatedly authored articles defending the statue, opposing the protests, and calling for the firing of professors who opposed the statue. he also supports the alt-right, of course

odd how, in the wake of a mass action which tore a Confederate statue down, the WaPo thinks that guy is the only student worthy of an interview. they even forgot to mention his affiliation, describing him only as "a student"

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/15/technology/personaltech/track-your-life-app.html

This guy is definitely not a technology addict

quote:

Should people be using less tech to live smarter lives?

I love this question because the default solution to “Is unplugging from technology the key to happiness?” has become such a vehement, unwavering yes. And I don’t agree with that! I get a lot of happiness from scrolling through Instagram for 20 minutes when I first wake up, and I don’t think it’s inherently bad to rely on things like automation tools or virtual assistants. (Siri essentially replaced my short-term memory years ago.)

So when we talk about unplugging, I think what we’re really talking about is structuring our lives in ways that allow technology to serve us, rather than the other way around.

For example, an idea I hear from readers and other writers constantly is how to unplug when you’re on vacation — live in the moment rather than living on your smartphone. But there’s research that says taking photos makes “people more engaged with experiences, leading them to enjoy positive events more than people who didn’t take pictures.” So here, the common wisdom — enjoy your vacation more by completely unplugging! — is, in a way, contradicted by the research.

Should you plan for a less fun vacation because it would make for better Instagram stories? You do you! But the assumption that we can be truly happy only if we unplug is one that adds stress to our lives because it’s yet another thing we have to worry about : “Did I unplug enough today?”
